Football Manager 2008

The game starts to create new players after a year or so, otherwise the number of people would slowly decrease as players got old and retired. After a decade or so, there'd be no one left :p

So it creates new ones. Old systems used to just put players back in much younger (so Ryan Giggs would reappear as a seventeen year old Gyan Riggs who was identical in every way), but the newer ones create players totally independently of the elder ones. It's fun, and it adds that factor of signing a young player you know nothing about (because he doesn't exist in real life), and then nurturing him into a footballing God.

Will they still play in the same position as their older retired versions? Do they appear at specific clubs or is it just random youth players? I used to be class at the game in 04 by taking Coventry and Motherwell to three champions leagues each and about 8 titles between them. I got the new 08 game and started life at Dagenham. I had them going really well until about halfway through the season our form slumped. Do people change tactics during games? I ask because I play a 442 diamond and play attacking direct football which seems to work for about 3 games but then I get hammered. I think maybe I should start out games with a slightly defensive formation and vary it every 15 minutes during the game. I love it when you do well with an average team and get offered jobs. :smirk:

Is there any way of resetting the hall of fame? Does anybody know? I left my game for a couple of hours on holiday to make sure there were no crashes. Played the Swiss league but it only takes about 30 mins per season and it ended up playing 10 seasons on holiday. I can't get near the top of the Hall Of Fame now!

iv taken charge of the galaxy and feck me they are shit first I get a pathetic £100,000 transfer kitty, and then i find all the ridiculous (sp?) rules in the mls such as salary caps and not being alout more than 4 senior internationals. and then theres the waiver list! anyway, I tried signing the likes of hasselbank and hamman thinking i could lure them because of becks but no there having none of it even Dong refused to come out on loan!! so i then even try to get Djemba Djemba....but i cant afford to give him the £30,000 a week he wants and klebersons club charge £5m for him!!

so im half way through my season doing shit, becks has been average and donovan has been my best player, scoring isnt the problem, we always score....we just concede shit loads I got an experienced keeper and hes still shit...

I cant wait till the season ends, im going to get a new set of staff and demand more transfer money so i can get the likes of djemba....

You know your team is shit when you know the likes of djemba djemba will improve them *sigh*

oh and even Sheringham turned me down!!!

I'm having the same problem playing as TFC. My goal is to just do w/e until I can get to a European team.

You should try being Kettering Town, I finished forth in the Premier League last season, which was my first in the top flight and won my qualifier against Kiev to get into the group stages of the Champions league. Plus a 25,000 all seater, under soil heated stadium on the way :) Loving it!

Just started with QPR and got them promotion in my first year. I'm getting walloped by the premier league sides though.

I just gave up with the MLS. The rules were driving me mad, I just resigned as TFC boss and am looking for a club. It's taking forever though.

Well, my side isn't great in comparison to the other teams in the PL but i find playing a 4-1-2-1 with the 2 central midfielder's going wide (via the arrows, if ya get what i mean) is a good formation to play, It ends up being a 4-1-3-2 in attack, its also solid defensively. IMO Wingers are a luxury and only for teams with good players on FM.

Like this..

But use the AM as a playmaker and generally play short passing. Also check out some of those players, they will come in handy 5 years into the game.

Thanks Cupid, I'll give it a try. Any of those players you have around in 2008/09 season? (Aside from Barnes, and Wheater)

Nearly all of them i think except for maybe Radovic, Bond, Granum, Cervenka.

Neymar, Millan and Galvan are must buys, they are only like 15 at the start. You have to wait until they get U21 caps to get a work permit but they end up being wonder kids. I've had Chris Keenan since the Conference North, he develops into a top keeper and a steal at 5k. Its worth checking through them all anyway.

Will do some investigating. Thanks a bunch.

Im at Dagenham and was going great guns in my first season and all of a sudden we havent had a win in 11 games. Im gonna get some of your recommended playsd though and see if I can improve our luck. I love seeing small teams get to the Champions League. Not sure if i can devote 25 years of my life to getting Dagenham there though!! :D

Do you set any other individual player instructions? For the DM or the 2 CM's i mean?

Also, with the 2 CM's pulling out wide does it help if they can play on the wing at all? Or would, say, Carrick be ok there?

I have a system that works just fine, i came 2nd in the PL with Bury, but its based on a 4-5-1. My problem being.... i like buying strikers!!

4-5-1 is the only truly successful formation in this game in the long term, with the players in the AMR and AML roles, and putting them both on very high closing down. Working a treat for me so far.

I find having them in the AML + AMR roles i was conceding quite a few goals through my full backs getting over run.

The way it worked for me was having a flat back 4, a DM, a flat 4 across midfield with the 2 wingers having arrows right to the top and their creative freedom set between normal and lots and 1 of my CM's with an arrow going up to the AM position. Then a striker.....

That's why the personal instructions are so important. You put them very attacking but also on full closing down, so when attacking they will play like strikers, and when defending, like Dirk Kuyt-esque wingers.

Also a flat midfield 4 is asking for trouble, the DM in 2008 is THE key player, if you get his instructions right he will be immense in there.

Yeah it's fine, they CM's don't need to be able to play wide you can play Carrick there or any other CM.

As far as Instructions go..

I have the AM set as playmaker, normal settings for an AM. As for the CMs, default CM setting but use the cross rarely option and often for forward runs. Make sure the full backs are on often for forward runs, its upto them to provide width. The DM should be on rarely for forward runs and close down in own area. The marking is all Zonal including CB's and short passing is a must at a medium tempo. I've outplayed lots of teams with this system because due to the shape they cant handle the overloading in midfield.

In attack it looks like a 4-1-3-2 in defense its a 4-3-1-2 i find it very versatile and i dont have to keep changing the formation due to various circumstances because the system seems to be able to handle lots of threats and situations.

I have the flat 4 across the midfield plus a DM.

Works a treat if the objective is not to concede many goals.

I agree a flat midfield is asking for problems, its also hard to play short passing and dominate possession in games.

Could someone PM me a link for the 8.02 crack. The one i have keeps making it crash. Oh yeah not on rapidshare please.

well i resigned as galaxy boss and have applied for several other jobs for six months now....and even the likes of Burnley don't want me grrr

Is there any way to make the game run a but quicker, i always get pissed off and stop playing?

how many leagues did you choose when creating the game? The less, the faster it goes.

If i choose only the english league, does it limit the players i can buy or just the teams i can manage?

If you have the large database you'll be fine but if you play it for long periods (10 seasons or more) you'll notice English clubs dominate Europe and there aren't many quality foreign re-gens coming through.

Erm, if you have the database set on huge or large? it shouldnt effect the players available really. I play lower league and my comp can only run about 6 leagues fast so i just run all the english leagues and nothing else. But if i started as a premier league team i would just run the premier league and maybe i few of the other top leagues in Europe. Its important to select large database though.

EDIT: Yes, you can only manage English teams.

If you only want to manage in the English leagues, then just load the English Leagues with large database. If you want to play a world career game, the use medium database, and load a league from each of the continents, as this will load their Champions League sort of competitions, and the range of regens created will be more broad.

Alex Fernandez, from Coslada(sp?). The best value for money player in the game, costs nothing and will score goals right up to winning the Champions league level.

Anyone got a decent goalie I can get for my Daggers side. My current lad seems to enjoy passing to the opposition when Im one up!

Chris Keenan. Cupid suggested him to me, and I bought him straight away. He's 21 from N.I. and only cost me about 20k, and he is great.

So what is the best formation to play? From what I am reading, is it 4 5 1? I love playing 2 strikers though. So is it 4-5-1 with a defensive midfielder?

The 4-5-1 is good and would recommend more than a 4-4-2 a 4-4-1-1 can also be good. I also like playing with 2 strikers and found this formation very good (see below) you need the right players of course.

Chris Keenan, he can be a little inconsistent for the first 2 seasons but still top class. Heres what he looks like after around 5 seasons.. Perfect for the lower leagues but can be hard to keep hold of.

I would also suggest making a 4-1-4-1 formation to see out games with 10 mins to go if you are 1-0 up. Defensive and counter attacking.
