Fernandinho, Man City's unsung hero?

He's a different class. Not sure who was given man of the match today but he was first, second and third.

I was impressed how well he broke up play but also how set up attacks tonight with some clever passing. He was really good tonight.
There's a bit of a mean streak in him but there's no denying his quality as a footballer.
30 million from Shakhtar was a steal.

Anyone reckon Fred can turn into a Fernandinho type of player?

Why did this guy spend 8 years in Shakhtar and how come no one picked him up earlier?

Hope this guy stays fit for the rest of the season. Different gravy.

Crazy thing is he seems to have actually improved at a fairly late age, I don't remember him being as good as this 3-4 years ago.

Don't think he has the attributes to play that role but if I remember right Fernandinho took a season or two to find his feet so maybe Fred can at least become a very good player for us. Don't think he can reach that level though. Fernandinho is a beast. Missing him alone probably cost City at least one result in the last couple of games.

Unreal player. He pisses me off he gets away with so many cards though. He could easily been sent off 5+ times this season which is turn would have City further down the table.

He's clearly an essential player for them and was brilliant tonight but I think some people are getting carried away here. There's a reason people were slagging him off on the first page of this thread - he was rubbish in the WC and is often poor for Brazil. Guardiola tried to replace him straight after and would've made him a bench player for Jorginho no problem, IMO.

It seems to have coincided with the arrival of Pep. David Silva has always been a brilliant player, but his performances went up a level when Pep arrived. Sterling too.

Fernandinho covers a lot of space and moves quick. He also has that fighting attitude in him. He's simply better defending then on the ball. Haven't seen much of Fred but didn't look like similar type of player.

He was ok this match but, not as good as this thread suggests. And with the criticism you guys have of Sterling this match I am wondering if you guys were watching the same match.

Don't think he's unsung, he's a third of the KDB, Silva, Fernandinho triangle. Less goals and assists, which inevitably leads to less limelight but has always been a top DM for most on here from what I have seen.

I think many would have him as best, or at worst top 3, in the league.

Way more important than De Bruyne. They look so vulnerable when he's not there.

Fernandinho and the two Silvas have been fantastic together this season. A fit KDB wouldn't actually be in their first choice XI at the moment.

Anyone else thinks it's criminal a side like City does not have a proper back-up for arguable their most important player? I think that's why the Jorginho snub hurt them more than they'd like to admit.

Who's criticizing Sterling? He was excellent.

I remember him being pretty outstanding the season they bought him tbh. Was never the most eye catching player so easy to overlook I guess. Most players seem to kick it up a notch playing for guardiola as holocene says so a bit of that too.

It might be as simple as that in the end.

I thought that too at the time but I don't think Jorginho has the engine to do Fernandinho's job. He's neater and tidier and better on the ball but I don't think he has the gas tank. Tbh I don't really know who does but we're going to have to find a solution sooner rather than later.

He was good in 13/14 when they won the title. Then Toure declined which hurt Fernandinho a bit but his class was always there to witness. Found new life under Guardiola though.

Delph is their reserve DM but he's had to cover at left back for the past season and a half.

I think Jorginho would struggle in that role just as much as Gündogan has. It's not his game at all. Allan would be the better reserve and eventual replacement for Fernandinho.

Nail on head there. If he was properly dealt with by ref's he would be considered a liability. As he's allowed to constantly foul without punishment it makes him look twice the player.

Motm for me. Was brilliant. Been a class signing for them.

Outstanding. What I am hoping Fabinho to become

Amazingly good in that role. MOTM tonight and City will need him to remain fit.

Phenomenal player, if they can keep him fit then they'll win the league, if not then Liverpool will win. That's how good I think he is.

Sat in a midfield 2 with Pellegrini for 2 years next to Toure. Without him doing the work, Toure wouldn't have had the season he had in 13/14. Essentially did the defensive work for 2 players when next to Yaya.

An outstanding footballer capable of doing the dark side of the game which is never a bad thing

Yeah it’s nuts especially when likes of Mangala is still on their books. They did go for Fred who has shown glimpses of similar characteristics but once he signed for united they went quiet. It is a bit mental alright.

They tried to bring over Douglas Luiz who they have stashed in Girona but, did not qualify for a work permit.

Jorginho isn’t in the same league as Fernandinho at winning the ball and breaking up play. Jorginho and Allan combined to make the player and role Fernandinho does on his own for city. Him and David Silva are by far and away the most important players at the club (although Silva was shite tonight)
