Sir Alex Ferguson: I'm in charge here! Manchester United boss says Wayne Rooney will return when HE says so and club will not buy in January

Sir Alex Ferguson last night re-established full control in his power battle with Wayne Rooney by ruling out any transfer activity in January and revealing the striker may have to wait until December before being recalled to Manchester United's first team.

Having helped to make 25-year-old Rooney the highest-paid player in the club's history nine days ago, Ferguson has moved quickly to make sure the England star realises he will be treated just like any other player from now on.

Dismissing supposed 'assurances' Rooney had wanted about future signings, Ferguson insists United's transfer policy had not changed following the signing of the player's five-year contract.

Ferguson also made it clear to £200,000-a-week Rooney, who watched the controversial 2-0 win over Tottenham after a week's holiday in Dubai, that he will decide when the striker makes his comeback.

The form of Dimitar Berbatov and Javier Hernandez gives Ferguson options and he is anxious that Rooney is fully fit when he returns to action from his ankle injury.

'We won't be buying in January, definitely not,' said Ferguson, despite Rooney's concerns about the strength of United's squad. 'You are limited because there are hundreds of players cup-tied for European football.

'There will be five months of the season left and we will be getting a new player back in February with Antonio Valencia returning from injury, and maybe another in Owen Hargreaves. With the squad I've got, I don't see any reason for us to buy anyone.

'There has always been money to spend but it doesn't necessarily mean there will be more transfer activity than normal in the summer. We will buy what we need to buy. We know what we need.

'There is always this issue if Van der Sar, Scholes, Giggs or Neville were to retire but we've been aware of that for two or three years and we are well ahead of that. We know exactly what we have to do.'

Despite United being linked with a number of big-name stars including Luis Suarez, Karim Benzema and Wesley Sneijder, Ferguson has told Rooney and everyone else they will have to keep faith in United's tradition of bringing on younger players like 'Chicharito' Hernandez.

Ferguson is adamant he will not rush Rooney back despite the player's desire to play every week and is even looking at the Champions League tie with Valencia on December 7 as a possible comeback date.

The 68-year-old said: 'It may be five weeks before Rooney's comeback because he will have to pick up his fitness again. I would think five weeks would be about right.

'There is no chance of the Manchester City game on November 10 coming into the equation. You want any player who has been out a few weeks to be 100 per cent and not breaking down. That is what happened to Ryan Giggs a couple of weeks ago.'

No real surprise, I think top 3 this season and then evaluate it in the summer, I was hoping maybe one of the young players we have been linked with like Ganso or Sanchez who is not cup-tied might come in January, but oh well.

The amount of people who thought Fergie would splurge cash because messier Rooney threw his toys out of the pram is laughable really. You really think Fergie would agree to a clause like that and giving a player so much power?

Also the amount of people who think Fergie doesn't see the problem of replacing Giggs, Scholes and Neville is also laughable. Like he says he's obviously known about these issues for a long time.

February for Valencia? That'd be incredible, surely that's an overly optimistic estimate?

That was the date given right after the operation. Lets hope it's accurate for a change.

Maybe? I think SAF has lost patience with Hargreaves, the fact he's sure Valencia will be back in Feb but not at all sure about Owen '2 weeks' Hargreaves is bad news.

I didn't think we'd make any major signing in January, there was some talk about a move for Defour in January but that seems very unlikely now. Wonder what players he has in mind to replace the legends?

Pretty sure Scholes will retire this season. Neville should have retired last season. VDS may go on, but we're looking for a keeper anyway to challenge him. I have a feeling Giggs may go on for another season - £200k per week in Dubai notwithstanding.

Fergie has been buying young talent over the years, maybe he anticipates some of that talent starting to emerge by the new season?

Another 5 weeks before we see Rooney again? seems a bit steep, that would mean a total of 7 weeks out after that injury in training that we originally diagnosed as a 2-3 week injury that's now turned into a 2 month injury.

I'm sure holyland red will be here soon to tell us how much Rooney would have earned in those 7 weeks.

This is bitch slap no. 2 on Rooney.

First sidelining him till December due to "his ankle." Now, another prerequisite for signing-on to his new contract...

I think lesson learnt here for Rooney; don't cross Fergie unless you like getting spanked like a bitch.

Giggs - Nani
Scholes - Cleverley/Anderson (if he starts to show some promise)/Possible new young signing
Neville - Rafael
VDS - New Signing

In SAF I trust except when it comes to transfer market info. I see no problems with our attack and defence. It's in the central midfiled where we lack true quality, and just maybe we might buy someone .

Cleverley will be back in January. He should give us another option, but we'll see how much of one.

I hope you're right. But for the past 2 summers I have been hoping we'd sign a top midfielder and it hasn't happened so I'm not getting my hopes up.

Difference being the last 2 summers we haven't had to replace Paul Scholes, which is a very likely prospect next summer, i don't for a minute believe we'll simply let Paul retire and not look to bring a top quality established player in to replace him, Fergie has said we will spend on signature players when the time is needed, that time is in all likelihood when the Van der saars and the Scholes's call it a day.

One might say we've been holding off shooting our transfer load as it were knowing this day is upon us, we didn't 'need' to spend such amounts last summer or summers gone, we will need to next summer though for reasons explained, better to have a larger budget to call upon when needed.

Really wouldn't surprise me at all if fergies deliberately held off in recent windows knowing he'll have a few big names to replace sooner rather than later.

The tricky thing is we'll have to register 5 players next season that we didn't have to this season.

In all likelihood we will sell a few of those prospects that aren't cutting it by the end of the season. And if not then they might send a few on loan anyway.

I'm pretty sure Fabio, Rafael, Cleverley and Smalling will still be here, Obertan may be the only one of the 5 that doesn't make the cut.

Well it depends, who's to say we wont get a nice bid for Cleverly and believe it be best if he moved on, sure hes a talented lad but is he first team material at Manchester United? i guess only Sir Alex can answer that one but its not beyond the realms of possibility he be sold next summer, the fact hes out on loan and not in and around the squad suggest fergie considers him some way off the required level just yet.

It's possible of course but I'd be very surprised. I think if we are to get a couple of midfield additions we'll either sell 2 players or sell 1 and Scholesy retires.

I think there could be a few first teamers under threat next summer, the likes of Carrick, maybe Park maybe even Anderson if Sir Alex loses patience could all leave, it all depends on what bids and what form the players have shown i suppose, i wouldn't rule out a total midfield overhaul next summer.

Not really, I reckon his (Rooneys) statement was just contract wrangling rhetoric. Thinking about it, what did Rooney say that you don't read 90% of the caf saying day in day out since we sold Ronaldo.
