When a manager has a 29 year old utility player whose game is mostly workrate then he will have to make a decision whether to keep him or let him go, especially if he's got 1 year left in his contract. SAF did the same with Nicky Butt and Phil Neville who left United in very similar circumstances.

In my opinion, Matic will be a centre piece of Mou's midfield. He knows Mou's system inside out and is the typical holding midfielder Mou likes to have around. Matic cant be our only DM so we'll probably bring someone whose younger, whose ready to accept the bench and whose salary reflects that role. Leander seems to fit the bill
As box to box we already have Herrera whose magnificent in the role. Matic-Herrera will be the ideal partnership in a 4-2-3-1 system. The former is an experienced DM who will close the gap between defence and midfield. Herrera's workrate and quality makes him the ideal player to win the ball, disrupt the opponent's game and move the ball forward. Carrick will be Herrera's cover. He's not like for like as Carrick is more of a deep lying playmaker. Having said that, while Carrick's defensive duties are mostly over, he can still be a valid player in a Pirlo's role. I can see us play Carrick with Leander (the latter providing the legwork) and Matic with Herrera.
Pogba will be given a free role, flirting between the most advanced midfielder in a 4-3-3 system or as a no 10 in a 4-2-3-1 system. Mata and Mkhitaryan will act as a more conventional no 10.
Of course things can change if Periera start scoring goals then I can see him play as no 10 especially if Pogba cant deliver the goods on that

If this does turn out to be true I guess it can't be that much of a surprise given we only executed the additional 1 year on his contract rather than renegotiated a longer deal
I think he's a useful player to have but I guess people would rather we beat teams with super sexy attacking football than using tactics like Fellaini v Ajax. He's had some good moments for us under LVG and Jose and no one can take those away even if you are under the opinion he shouldn't have been at the club in the first place

Fellaini deserves credit for sticking to his task and not letting his head drop. He's actually got a pretty good mentality to be honest. He's also scored some crucial goals, scoring in 3 semi finals in a row is a very good achievement and he can be proud of helping us win some trophies recently.
He's just not very good though. His techincal ability is so low, we are never going to play good football regularly if he is in the team. We just aren't.

Reasonable analysis, actually. G.Nev was one of the most consistent defenders defensively a full back United have had in years, but he was VERY average technically, and his passing under pressure just fell to bits. Although his crossing did improve a lot around the time he hit 30.

If we remove Fellaini and replace with Matic it's a clear upgrade, and doesn't impede Perrieria from getting game time.

Isn't it Galatasaray? Maybe we get 15M from them. That's still very good value with Fellaini turning 30 a couple of months into this season. He seems like he'll age okay with his strength and fitness being good, but if he loses a step and can't pass, it's hard to think of any slow midfielder who can't pass really helping a team. He's up to 485 pro games (Belgium + Club) and has 11 seasons under his belt. It wouldn't be a shock if next year, age 31, is his last season at his usual level.
Decimated might be a bit strong. Pogba has it all and Herrera is reasonably quick for a CM and though he isn't that strong he's got decent height and does put in a tackle. Only Blind is slow and kind of weak, and there are a lot of DMs who compensate for that issue.
I don't think he should be first choice there for us, but I'm fine with him as 2nd choice there next year if Carrick retires.

He was a Sunday league player in first few seasons. His improvement has been great over the last 12 Months which elevates him to the status of a limited player for a lesser team or league.

Not his biggest fan so would be glad to see him leave. He just reminds me of Moyes' season too much and he is a liability at times.

Something very likeable about Fellaini despite his connection to the Voldemoyes era. Would be happy to see him stay as a squad player to give the likes of Pogba and Herrera a rest in less important games next season. He's defo nowhere near a first XI player for big important games but it would be nice seeing him once in a while in FA Cup games etc kicking lumps out of opposition while popping up with important headers. He's as good as it gets for defending set pieces and happy to put his body (and hair) on the line

I would certainly hold my hands up as being one of the pitchfork wielding mob for most of his time here, but I can appreciate how professionally he's dealt with it, and understand how people would find four years of it obnoxious and counterproductive. His performance in the Europa final went a long way to placating my ingrained bias against him. Even to the extent of finding it mildly admirable and endearing.
All that said, the problem goes well beyond him and his specific performances at this point. He's become a totem for everything that's gone wrong in the post-Fergie years, fairly or not. I've no doubt we'd only find another whipping boy if he left, but even though my feelings toward him have thawed somewhat, I still think he needs to go, if only to provide some admittedly nonsensical symbolic catharsis.
If you wanted to get needlessly introspective, you could claim that the Treble winning fledglings and the Rooney-Ronaldo double winners needed to lose the likes of Cantona and Ruud respectively to truly come into their own. This is kinda like the low rent straight to video SyFy channel Asylum bootleg version of that.
