Favourite players: current and retired

I was a striker or centre back myself when I played in any sort of game, so I have an affinity for them.

1. de Ligt. I think he is a fantastic centre back and leadership is such an important trait. Won titles all over Europe and is starting to show his tenacity and class at United.

2. Lewandowski. Quality finisher and one of the last truly great number 9s.

3. Rooney. Peak Rooney was a combination of the most exciting and most selfless player you could get. His explosiveness and desire meant that very few touched him in terms of “must watch” at his very peak.

4. Drogba. I just loved the combination of power, pace and technical ability. He had everything you would want from a number 9, including the ability to produce performances in big games. Some of his goals couldn’t be scored by anyone else.

Shaw, yes his fitness is hugely disappointing but a marvelous technician.
Messi- nothing needs adding
Giggs, whatever you think of the man, he was a beautiful and exhilarating footballer.
Zidane, that era is my favourite and one of the highlights was Spanish football on Sky, watching Ronaldinho, Valeron and Zidane play the game so artistically before stats took over everything. Zidane graceful mastery of the game was inspiring.

I'm feeling especially creative today so I'm making a thread that no one else could possibly think about.

* really loved Schmeichel while he played for us, but he did ruin it a little with his stints at City and even Villa.

Currently at United - Probably Bruno, but do like Amad too.
At another club - Lewandowski.
Retired from United - Robson
Retired from another club - Maradona. If we need living players then I'm going Juninho just based on how much I wanted United to sign him in '97.

Colm Cooper, Clifford, Brogan, McMahon, Cluxton, Fenton, Kilkenny, McCarty or McCambridge all left out.

Joe McNally of St.Annes and Dublin was some man. 15 pints a session and he was still more than able to out the graft in. Hero.

Haha, love those sort of characters - Corkery was one i always loved too. Clearly fond of a pint/kebab before turning it on of a sunday!!

I accept those Dubs and Cooper/Clifford are better players than my selection. But i never got excited by that all conquering Dublin team (like Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes - best driver in best car - not much fun most of the time).

McHugh is a freak of nature. He can run at 95% pace all game every game, even as he gets older. Hes been a thorn in Armagh sides for years.

Conaty reminds me of him - those all the type of players i love. McCambridge is awesome and, imo, was the main reason we won the All Ireland last year.

McDonald was a maverick - he was the Eric Cantona of gaelic football. He was a joy to watch.

Would you have remembered that great Brazil team at first hand?

What made Socrates stand out compared to the other players of that amazing squad?

Retired player: Maradona

Micheal Laudrup
Byran Robson

1. Bruno. It's not only his numbers or quality. It's the work rate and playing all the time ever since he came 5 years ago.
2. Kane (has been for years now). One of the best strikers over the last decade and also seems to be an okay guy. Great player and deserves the trophies that are probably coming at Bayern.
3. Rooney, Carrick, De Gea. Can't pick one. Rooney was our best player when Ronaldo left and also was ready to play in different positions. Carrick was a joy to watch with his passing. De Gea was our only bright spot so often in 2013-2019 period and won us countless points. Obvious that he's emotionally connected to the club still so that's great to see as well.
4. Yaya Toure - great player and so vital for City under Mancini and Pellegrini. 13/14 season I was particularly impressed with him.

Good thread to have now that there's International break.
