Fave Albums of 2008

Hey, it's blank for me too now. I saw them earlier today. They were Paavoharju - Laulu Laakson Kukista and Gang Gang Dance - Saint Dymphna.

I just downloaded that Paavoharju album as a mate who knows what I like had recommended it to me but I never got round to listening to it - I know nothing about it except that it is some random Finnish thing

I have noticed you hanging about in the electronica thread in the past which is why i was interested in what you might recommend !

Air France - No Way Down

Quiet Village - Silent Movie

Pacific! - Reveries

Hercules & Love Affair - Hercules & Love Affair

M83 - Saturdays = Youth

Lykke Li - Youth Novels

Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours

Goldfrapp - Seventh Tree

Hot Chip - Made in the Dark

Jazzanova - Of All the Things

Kleerup - Kleerup

too name a few, in no particular order

Two stand out for me:

Second one was short but feck me did it get some playing time in my house.

I didnt even know Jazzanova released an album last year - will have to seek it out

Came out late last year. It's very jazzy, much more so than their previous albums.

But then again, it's released on Verve so that figures :)

haha fair enough!

Im quite liking that Finnish stuff BTW
Check out this one while you're at it. It's a track from their previous album and one of my favourite songs of the millennium so far. It's terribly saccharine, but there's an edge of lo-fi weirdness to it which sort of balances things out.

My favourites of 2008, in no particular order after my #1:

#1
Ting Tings - We Started Nothing

The Last Shadow Puppets - Age Of The Understatement

Kaiser Chiefs - Off With Their Heads

Duffy - Rockferry

The Kooks - Konk

I must say, whilst I've enjoyed the above - in particular Ting Tings, I think that's a stunning album - I don't think 2008 was as good as 2007 for albums.

Raccoo-oo-oon - Raccoo-oo-oon

feck Buttons - Street Horrrsing

Sigur Rós - Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust

Favorite of the millenium - thats quite a high accolade!
Is the first album similar style to the second?
My mate who recommend it described them to me as the Finnish Sigur Ros - i can see the similarity although it is quite different at the same time.

:lol::lol::lol:

Hip Hop / Hip Hop / Hip Hop / The Kooks

Ye - I thought that was pretty funny as well - but its good to have some diversity!

It's been a quite short millennium so far, to be fair.

If you've heard one, the other will be easily recognizable as Paavoharju, but the second one is more ambient and unified (or Sigur Ros-ish, if you like). Also more hi-fi.

Fair enough you seem to know your music but this has to be the most pretentious shite I've seen posted on the caf.
Well, "saccharine" is probably a bit dandy, though it's a smashing word, but the rest of the sentence consists of completely normal words put together in a completely normal fashion. All in all I would rank it as my 143rd most pretentious post on the Caf.

I think I may hate you.

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss 'Raising Sand'
Radiohead 'In Rainbows'

The two in bold are from 2007 but are among the best from that year.

Haven't heard too many complete albums this year but I think Vampire Weekend were really good with their debut album.

1. Mudvayne - The new game
2. Guns n roses - Chinese democracy
3. Metallica - Death Magnetic
4. Jorne Lande - Lonely are the brave
5. George Lynch - Scorpion Tales

Couldn't be arsed to check the release dates, so was going by what I bought this year. So scratch those two and add:

British Sea Power 'Do You Like Rock Music?'
and
Laura Marling 'Alas I Cannot Swim'

also Noah and The Whale 'Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down' which I bought for my daughter, and who Laura Marling was with before going solo. I do like my folk rock.

British Sea Power 'Do You Like Rock Music?'

Good shout. Criminally underrated band.

For me, Kings of Leon, and Glasvegas were the two albums(off the top of my head), that I kept going back to.

I bought Glasvegas because of all the critical aclaim, and have put it on my MP3 player, but never found time to give it a proper listen. Ths reminds me to look it out again and give it a proper listen on the hifi system.

i just bought vampire weekend due to its popularity here... who of you is going to give me my 16 dollars back?

You didnt like it? Thats a shame

I feel partly responsible so I will refund you - just PM me your name, address, bank account details and mothers maiden name.

heheh,

its ok but its like a softer version of arctic monkeys. Probably not in the mood for it now, probably be good chilling out playing poker with a beer or wine or something like that.

Its all about the afrobeat - give it a few more listens!
