Books Fantasy Reads

Anyone see Pat Rothfuss' Twitch chat that was billed as a talk about Book 3?

I've not seen it yet and probably won't as it doesn't sound very interesting but in short:

- No date still.
- He knows exactly how important this book is to fans and won't release until he is completely happy.
- Cthaeh is not a tree.

That's the only key takeaway from the chat.

So breezed through the first 3 books of Nightside series by Simon R Green.

It's an Urban Fantasy set in Nightside a fantasy area in London where alien and mythical creatures are commonplace, magic is rampant and morals are flexible. Kind of a sleazy underworld in a literal sense. John Taylor is the protogonist who acts as a private detective and has a special talent to finding things in Nightside. His birth is shrouded in mystery and everyone is afraid to talk about his mother. He takes cases solves mysteries while the overall theme progresses.

Lots of stereotypical characters, tongue in cheek humor. Very small world (like within a city) and character building is pretty light.

But for all that it's very entertaining as a light break read. Having just finished Malazan novellas, I was not in a mood for anything serious and this is a perfect stop gap read. Just like watching a fun action movie. Nothing of critical value in this...but enjoyable.

Finished the first two Witcher books. Liked them so going to read the third one.

I have finished the Robot and the Foundation novels from Issac Asimov.

Enjoyed the Robot Novels more than the Foundation Novels.
Agree. Liked Robots more too. In fact, I even liked Foundation prequels than the main trilogy.

Btw, avoid Galactic Empire like the plague.

I will read the prequels after I finish the Expanse. Yeah not really inclined to read the Galactic Empire novels but have quite a bit of Sci-fi lined up.

- Expanse Series
- Foundation Prequels
- Hyperion Cantos (Not decided whether to read the entire series or only the first book)
- Dune (Only the first book)
- Rendezvous with Rama (Only the first book)

Hopefully, it will be finished before Assassin's Fate comes out.

Hyperion Cantos is easily my GOAT when it comes to sci-fi. Definitely worthy to read all of it, despite that the third book drags a bit.

The final book has the best climax I have ever read, although the first book is a bit better. I also found the second book excellent.

Definitely the right choice to read just the first Dune. It becomes shit immediately after it.

Recommend me.

Just finished the Farseerer series and thoroughly enjoyed it. Didn't expect to but I did. Still, want a break from Robin Hobb so any suggestions of something similar I can read? Chars.

Can't think of anything similar tbh. Robin Hobb has that unique style of writing (especially when she's writing about Fitz) that just draws you in completely. You could try Liveship from Hobb. Fantastic and better than Farseer but different in structure and style so you would avoid burnout.

Ah that's a good point actually, am I right in saying it's multiple pov? Thank you.

Yeah. I've avoided reading it for ages as I didn't think I'd enjoy it. She could write 100 pages where nothing happens and I'd still enjoy the read.

I'm currently reading The Queen's Poisoner which is reminding me of the first farseer book. Enjoying it so far.

Think the whole trilogy is currently on sale on Amazon for Kindle, 99p per book.

Yeah it's multiple pov. A lot of people skip it because they want to read more of Fitz straight away but wouldn't really advise that. One, it's a fantastic read and two, the Tawny Man trilogy spoils most of the major plot points of the book.

Also, I always say that of all the fantasy series' out there this is the one I really want to see a movie for. Would be epic.

Liveship Traders is the best thing Hobb has written so it is a must read. On the other side, Wild Rain Chronicles are so bad but you cannot understand anything in the end of the second book of Fitz and Fool if you don't read them.

The closest thing to Farseer I can think of is the Kingkiller Chronicles from Rothfuss and Long Price Quartet of Abraham.

I'm struggling with getting through Live Ship Traders. Loved the Farseer trilogy but can't seem to get a grip on Live Ship so far.
You are the first one and probably the only one I have heard complain about the live ship traders. Seriously, some spoilers mother th standing I would rate Live Ship Traders amongst the best fantasy series out there.

But if you are struggling with the first book, I'd hope you continue with the remaining books, because the payoff in book 2 and book 3 is worth it.

I struggled with Book 1 but finished but dropped off halfway in two. But maybe I should reconsider and give it another go then.

After hearing the narrator of the Liveship raiders on the sample I've been a bit put off. Might have to actually read them, when I get the chance.

The Broken Empire is awesome. Lawrence is essentially Abercrombie, so you're gonna enjoy it.

Well if you haven't finished it already, I'd recommend First Law, Kingkiller and Stormlight Archives.
Haven't read stormlight yet. Thanks for the tip.
Finished Nightside.

That's 12 books in about as many days. Very light read. Sped read most and still was good for light relaxation.

Now starting on Prince of Thorns. Find it interesting till now.
How do you manage a book a day?!

Prince of Thorns

Different read from the rest. The casual regard to brutality takes some getting used to. Jorg is a very interesting character and I kinda started think of him as a teen version of Logen Ninefingers, just more explicit.

Not really impressed with the plot or the writing style. Kinda feels one dimensional like playing a hack/slash video game. Lot of gore, but really only one way to go forward. Events just seem to happen, pieces just fall in place bordering on implausible.

He comes across as quite stupid even for a 14 year old, the way he blunders into one fatal situation after another and someone ends up winning. Randomly throws in with brigands with no talents to speak of and survives and ends up leading them, dumbly walking back to his father expecting the throne, face off against Sageous and then Corion (luckily gets kicked by a horse, seriously?), somehow within a short while of accepting an impossible task, has a plan, knows the right stuff and nukes Gellath.

I love the Builders Sun concept as this feels like a post apocalyptic universe of the future. Curious if the author will build on this or just stop at dropping crumbs. Will read to find out...

Somehow I just feel I'm along the ride for a B grade action movie. Just take in the sights and relax and not tax my intelligence too much. Feel very contrived.

Rating: 6.5/10

Halfway into King of Thorns. The writing style has changed from book in and somehow I like this better than the earlier one till now.

I enjoyed the trilogy, but I read it before I'd read any Abercrombie.

If I'd read Abercrombie first, I think I'd have liked the thorns trilogy less.

Really enjoying the kingfountain trilogy though at the moment.

Wheel of Time: Shadow Rising(book 4)

It's taking me a while to get through these despite really liking them. They are huge and my time was limited with work, not to mention they can get kind of irritating like bad 90's stand up comedy "men be like this, but women be like THIS!" Plus there's the braid tugging and skirt arranging, it never ends! The main characters are all much better now that they have more individual personality and things are slowly coming together. Although it's getting hard to take any threat serious when they can face down pretty much anything now. Which makes me fear some of the later books might be vast swathes of filler given their size and the amount of them. I really want to know what happens next though.

I just wish they had more Moiraine, Suian Sanche and Lanfear. Less Nynaeve... much less Nynaeve and her god damn mother fecking braid and stout shoes. She's such an annoying bitch so far too. The male characters so far haven't been as interesting as the female ones, but Perrin was the stand out of the main three. Mat has potential, but feels like he is still being set up for a big story rather than having one.

I dunno whether to push on with the next one or take another break as I felt a bit burned out after reading the first two in a row then had to take a break of a few months between 2 and 3 and between 3 and 4. I do have other stuff there to read I suppose. It's just already getting hard to remember who everyone is with such a big cast, especial the Aiel. All those gingers and blondes being described in various confusing versions of ginger and blonde. Sun haired, flame haired, golden haired, hair the colour of wheat, hair like an albino baboon. Just say ginger or blonde!
