Facts about football that shouldn't be true - but are

Manchester United under Amorim have won 14 points from 14 games.
Everton under Moyles have won 13 points from 6.
Sad but true.

Meaning that if Everton beat us next week Moyes will have more points in fewer than half the games. :(

Lamine Yamal could potentially play at the 2050 World Cup.

Kinda bizarre fact. If he or any other player around his age has a long career like Ronaldo for example, and continues to be picked for the national team, then it could happen.

You do realise that Ronaldo probably has plans to play in that one as well

Carrick only played 1 game for England in a tournament.

I wasn't keeping up with England that much around this time, and I know he was often overlooked because that's one of the reasons I couldn't take to England (treatment of United players like Beckham and Phillip), but I thought he played more than 1 international tournament game.

It was this one:

Hansen, Shearer and Wright all complimenting him; saying he should keep his place. He was then dropped for the next game where we got knocked out against Portugal.

This was also the only knockout game in a 16 year period England won.

I seem to remember he was so good that the Real Madrid presidential candidates started randomly including him on their promised shortlists to fans.

Ewood Park is never full. Ever. No matter the opposition or occasion.

Owen Hargreaves was England's MOTM in the Portugal game. His performance saw United initiate enquiries, signing him the summer afterward.

I didn't realise it was Hargreaves England performances that brought him to Uniteds attention.
Moneyball rules in the modern game and one of it's principles is you should never buy a player based on international games.

Owen Hargreaves went onto win SAF's accolade of being the worst signing he ever made.

I don't agree with that at all. He was excellent in 2008 and was an integral part of the prem/UCL winning team. He was hideously unlucky with injuries after that, so was only good for that one season admittedly so not best value for money. But for me 'worst signing ever' territory is the likes of Taibi or Bebe, not a player who made 34 appearances and was a very important team member in the second most successful year ever in the club's history.

I also highly doubt he was bought purely on the strength of international appearances. Zero chance he wasn't scouted heavily at Bayern too.

You make a fair comment about Hargreaves contribution for that single season. The Sir Alex quip was in regards to his transfer fee and value for money. I read the quote some time ago and cannot provide a link, but in retrospect he was disappointed with the Hargreaves transfer and felt the fee could have been better spent.

Wright was bang on the money there. Carrick provided the added benefits of holding the midfield positionally and letting the ball do the work. All of those cute 10–15 yard passes through the lines turned the opposition midfield and could have got Gerrard and Lampard moving forward into dangerous spaces. I don’t think that was ever appreciated by his international managers.

It was sad how it worked out with the injuries, given he wasn't cheap and there was so sell on fee.

I guess SAF's memory of Hargreaves might also have been soured by him later mouthing off about how United treated his injuries too.

How many non-goalkeepers have ever played for their national team aged 43 in any game, let alone at a World Cup? I'd say the chances of him playing in the 2050 World Cup are way less than 1%.

Mental when you consider between 2006-2014 he was probably the best and most consistent English midfielder in the premier league. He only got 34 England caps.

Whereas a comparative water carrier in Jordan Henderson has 80+ caps.

Bruno at the weekend against Everton became the first United player to score directly from a free-kick in the Premier League since his Portuguese team-mate Ronaldo, against Norwich in April 2022.

Yeah, heard that. That free kick was the second one Bruno has scored for us in the league.

I'd have believed you if you said 2009.

Raheem Sterling has played more league games for Chelsea than Gianluca Vialli, Ruud Gullit or Glenn Hoddle.

Sorry, but Bebe is nowhere near such an 'accolade'. Unfairly stigmatised because of his name and backstory.

Hargreaves was quality in his one season for United, but drew Fergie's ire mouthing off about being used as a 'guinea pig'.

United's worst signings are the likes of Alexis Sanchez, di Maria, Antony, Casemiro and those still stymying the club's finances.

I agree with what you are saying. He was fantastic that first season. He was also fantastic for England and Bayern. Those knee injuries destroyed him. And I agree thar i wouldn't consider him a bad signing as injuries are hard to predict.
Signing for city and talking bad about our medical team was a big no no. That's unforgivable to SAF. Greatest boss ever. Privilege to have been able to have watched him tap on his watch.

I seem to remember he was so good that the Real Madrid presidential candidates started randomly including him on their promised shortlists to fans.
Fortunately we got him!

It was perfect timing. Ronaldo and Rooney were developing into great players, we were getting an all time great defence settled with van der Sar, Evra and Vidic settling alongside Rio and Neville/Brown, and Carrick was the perfect partner for Scholes.

His performance is on YouTube, too:

It boggles the mind. I know people say "well, he had poor games for England" but everyone did! Ashley Cole and Beckham were like the only two consistent performers around that era.

If Sven/Capello had played Carrick consistently, I'm sure he'd have settled and brought a better balance to the team.

It is a shame, yeah. In fact, I'd say he was England's best midfielder up until van Gaal left. He was still putting in great performances like this past 2014:

It's no surprise that him and Blind were like our only two consistent performers for the two years under van Gaal as his style suited them down to the ground. Smalling and Martial were the other two standouts under him.

Daley Blind joined Ajax as a first team squad member in the 2010/2011 season.

2010/2011 Daley at Ajax > Ajax wins the league
2011/2012 Daley at Ajax > Ajax wins the league
2012/2013 Daley at Ajax > Ajax wins the league
2013/2014 Daley at Ajax > Ajax wins the league
2014/2015 Daley at United > Ajax doesn't win the league
2015/2016 Daley at United > Ajax doesn't win the league
2016/2017 Daley at United > Ajax doesn't win the league
2017/2018 Daley at United > Ajax doesn't win the league
2018/2019 Daley at Ajax > Ajax wins the league
2019/2020 Daley at Ajax > Ajax wins the league
2020/2021 Daley at Ajax > Ajax finishes top of the table in a cancelled Covid season.
2021/2022 Daley at Ajax > Ajax wins the league
2022/2023 Daley joins Bayern in the winter > Ajax doesn't win the league
2023/2024 Daley at Girona > Ajax doesn't win the league

United will become the first English team to have played 6000 matches.

Some interesting stats from the article

Results

Played 5,999

Won 2,970

Drawn 1,411

Lost 1,618

Goals scored 10,454

Goals conceded 7,308

Games with extra time 87 (15 were followed by a penalty shoot-out)

Penalty shoot-outs 24 (9 without having played extra time) – won 11

622 of their 3,994 top-flight games at the top of the table (nearly one in six). Sir Bobby Charlton and Ryan Giggs became familiar with the summit during their long careers: more than one quarter of the 6,000 games have featured one or the other lining up for United. Almost exactly one quarter of the fixtures contained Sir Alex Ferguson in the dug-out, while Ferguson and Sir Matt Busby account for 44 per cent of appearances by managers.

United have played most games against Arsenal, who are also their most-played opponents in the league (211). They have recorded most matches against Liverpool in the FA Cup (19), against Manchester City in the League Cup (10) and against Barcelona in European competition (15).

Teams never faced
Gillingham, Mansfield

If 4 people got stabbed without dying during North West derby days in the mid 80s, the police called it a successful operation.

Saw this. In the last 50 years of the FA Cup either one of the two Liverpool based teams, one of of the two Manchester teams, and one of the big three London teams (Arsenal, Chelsea, and Spurs) have been in every final except the one in 07/08.
