Facts about football that shouldn't be true - but are

Roque Santa Cruz:
  • has a german punk rock song about him where he "sings" in the refrain:
  • Is still an active player for Libertad in the first league in Paraguay at 43 years of age
  • Played together with Lothar Matthäus for one year at Bayern

"Still an active player today" and "played with Lothar Matthäus" just sounds like it can't be true, but it is.

I read about one the other day.

1994 Caribbean Cup Barbados vs Granada.

For some reason group games went to extra time, but also the golden goal applied and the for some other insane reason the golden goal counted as 2 goals.

Barbados had to win by 2 to qualify for the next round, so with with the game at 2-1 going into the final few minutes, they decided to score an own goal to tie the game, go to extra time and score a golden goal which would give them the two goal win (4-2) and they would qualify.

Apparently what happened next was Grenada saw were they were trying to do and knew that a goal what way, would see them go through. So they tried to score an own goal to lose 3-2 before the end of regular time. Barbados then ended up defending both their own goal and the Grenada goal to stop a goal going in.

Game then went to extra time, Barbados got their golden goal and won 4-2 and qualified for the next round.

Brilliant!

I’ll go with a relatively minor one - the time when Cardiff City changed their home kits to red.

Liverpool wearing a specific tshirt to support a racist. Nowadays there would be a huge protest to that

Leicester winning the league

That great 05 Milan side throwing away a 3-0 lead to Liverpool

Man United not challenging for a title or CL since 2013

Germany 7-1 Brazil, in Brazil, at a world cup, in the semi final.

This is the one that immediately cropped into my head.

The bemusement and obvious atmosphere of "erm, how do we even address this?" in the sky studio before the game was the most entertaining thing about it.

Not only that though but Liverpool fc then followed it up with some kind of prolonged pro racism campaign that resulted in things like their fans racially abusing other opposition players.

Would have been quite weird even in the 80s. This was in 2012.

I think the most baffling part of this one was Dalglish himself getting in on it.

Just unbelievable.

Just unbelievable.

Just the whole thing really.

Worst case reaction for most sane people would be "we didn't think it was racist but apologise if it came across that way and will make sure it doesn't happen again"

And even that would border on unbelievable given the context of what was said, which just was completely indefensibly racist.

I can't have any respect for Dalglish since then. My immediate go to memory is of him defending racism like a complete cnut

The balloon at Sunderland. Absurd and hilarious.

Wigan beating City in the cup final while getting relegated.

That stupid goal in 2011 against Spurs where Nani blatantly handled the ball in the opposition penalty area, ref didn't blow for some absurd reason, so Nani just carried on and scored, and the goal was given.

I genuinely felt bad for Spurs at that moment. No way anyone would get away with anything like that today.

Chelsea winning the CL in 2012, specifically the semi final in the Nou Camp.

John Terry doing the full kit wnker thing on 2 different occasions.

The beautiful karma of Gerrard slipping and Crystanbul. Only way it could have been better is if we won the league as a result.

I still remember the semi final to this - seeing Chelsea put 11 men firmly in their half and Barcelona passing it endlessly around themselves not knowing what to do, until Torres scored that counter attack goal.

Was glorious to see Barcelona lose especially after the '09 CL semi final travesty.

Ronaldo being allowed to play in the '98 World Cup final.

"Yes, you've just had a convulsive fit and still look completely spaced out, and your teammates are all distraught, butttt! You're Ronaldo! Go on, lad! Win us the game!"

Would never be allowed in this day and age.

“In the 1994 Caribbean Cup, the tournament organisers implemented a variant of the golden goal rule: the first goal scored in extra-time not only won the match, but was also worth two goals. Barbados needed to win the match by a margin of at least two goals to qualify for the final over Grenada. Barbados led the game 2–0 until Grenada scored in the 83rd minute, bringing the score to 2–1. Barbados then deliberately scored an own goal, tying the game at 2–2, to force extra-time so that they could take advantage of the golden goal rule to achieve their needed two-goal margin.[1] This resulted in an unusual situation: for the last three minutes of the match, Grenada tried to score in both goals. Either outcome (3–2 on points, or 2–3 via goal difference) would have advanced them to the finals, while Barbados had to defend both goals. Ultimately, Barbados was able to prevent Grenada from scoring, forcing extra-time. Barbados then scored the golden goal to win the match.”

There’s a little footage of the deliberate OG to force ‘Golden goal’ extra time…

Nah, Barca fared well against eleven. It is in the second half, when Chelsea put 10 in their half, when they looked out of ideas. The craziest bit for me is that Barcelona were a goal (on aggregate) and a man up and still threw it away.

WTF  this is excellent

“We do not slip now” is the finest Shakespearean tragedy in the history of the game.

Almost Greek mythology-like in its lessons on arrogance and ego. The premonition of his own downfall, the show for the cameras..the same ones he would push away when it was all said and done. Just beautiful.

A story built over a decade to end like that would be really hard to beat.

Germany 7-1 Brazil, in Brazil, at a world cup, in the semi final.

This was probably the most shocked I've been watching a game... Watched it with a bunch of mates and we are all just looking at each other wondering what the feck was going on.

In fairness that was far more about Gomes being an idiot than the referee making some terrible decision. Nani had gone down asking for a penalty, Gomes picked the ball up so no need to blow for a free kick and then proceeded to set up for a free kick that hadn't been given and stand there like a lemon while the referee was asking him what the hell he was doing before Nani then put it in the net. I certainly didn't feel bad for them, their keeper was a fecking idiot.

The Terry slip against United in Moscow and the Gerrard slip against Chelsea, two moments plucked right out of a United fan's fever dream.

Man united beating City in the FA Cup final earlier this year. I gave United 1% chance of winning that game.

We have changed/sacked managers 6 times since Fergie retired (2013) - Moyes, Van Gaal, Jose, Solskjaer, Rangnick, Ten Hag

people make a big fuss about we keep changing managers and fail to give managers time

but:
Real Madrid has changed manager 7 times during the same period
Barcelona changed manager 8 times
Bayern changed manager also 8 times

We are indeed very patient to managers as a club

Every time I remember that Saurez bit a player on the pitch on three occasions, I find myself on his Wikipedia page reading all about them.

Even the pose they chose for the shirt almost looked like a Swastika
