Facebook, Amazon etc....

Graham talking about monopolies... free market, no? :wenger:
Not because I see any value in defending Lindsey Graham, but the mainstream economics consensus is that monopolies shouldn't be allowed to form or be broken up, so that markets function as intended/theorized.

From a quick google there, it looks like Graham has voted to allow monopolies once or twice himself.

I'll be honest, I'm fecking wrecked tonight and if I'm misreading this, so be it :D

So Zuckerberg doesn't think FB has a monopoly?! What a clown. They own Instagram and Whatsapp as well. He threatened Evan Spiegel after he refused to sell him Snapchat.

I could understand what he was saying when trying to explain who his competition is.

It’s not as simple as the car analogy Graham gave. Facebook doesn’t just have one type of customer, they have many from average users, advertisers, media personalities, message service users, ect ect

They have competition in every facet though.

What’s the comparable competition to Facebook?

Anyone else get the feeling that FB is deliberately “collecting” far more data than anyone realised and even now deliberately trying to hide this?

It’s been known how much they collect for years. The only change is people recognising how dangerous that is. Before now people just said “oh who wants to know about me? I’m boring”.

Oh sure, I understood what he meant as well. facebook has micoblogging features (status messages), features for businesses (pages), features for family and friends to stay in touch (messager) and Instagram like features (pictures) and Twitter like features (for news organisations). Twitter doesn't have all of that. Twitter is mainly for microblogging and used by businesses, journalists and news organisations to bring out news on politics, current affairs, business and sports.

But the senators were talking about FB's acquisitions of Instagram and Whatsapp that have made the public feel that FB has become too big and unregulated. People rightfully feel that their data is being compromised by the company for FB's financial gain.

Probably because they didn’t understand how much data/type of data collected. If you think it’s basic stuff you might not care but I’m thinking this is more than the basics.

He's just doing what Google did. Redefined the market they exist in as something broader than the reality (i.e. Google are not a search company but a technology company) and so will never be defined as a monopoly. We shouldn't expect them to do it at this stage. That's the job of the regulators.

What’s the comparable competition to Facebook?

Which part of Facebook?

As a messaging service? WhatsApp, Skype, Snapchat.

As a targeted advert provider? Google.

As a platform for social media stars? YouTube.

As a discussion forum? Reddit.

Sure, but that's not what he just said. He was directly asked was the sms syncing opt in or opt out and would it not track you if you opted out.
Ah fair enough, I just know that apps ask for all kinds of permissions that would give them an "out" to say people agreed to it.

He holds the baaaable high....he sets it down and then he lies.

These Republicans are actually sick in the head. They somehow turn these open sessions that should be getting to the heart of real issues into partisan cryfests.

He’s asking about WhatsApp, an encrypted service. He really should have done his research.

Ok Mark, you’re faced with a question you don’t want to answer, here’s how I want you to answer it:

“Can you clarify what you mean?....

...I’m sorry I still don’t understand what you are asking but that sounds like a great question and I’ll be happy to put my people in touch with your office to look into this further.”

Think he just wants Zuck to confirm it.

My point was that he chose the wrong example. It’s point to point encryption, that would be completely negated if Facebook had access to it at either end.

Yes but got the feeling that he wanted him to comfirm this on record for some reason or other.

Ah ok yeah that’s fair enough if that was his intention. I thought he was trying to get Zuckerberg to admit that services owned by Facebook were covertly sharing data with Facebook.
