Good news this.

a) Means we're signing a specialist full back almost 100%

b) Fabio will continue to develop. Hope he goes somewhere nice like Sunderland or Wigan (if they stay up)

c) Frees up 25 man squad space

As long as it doesnt mean he is on his way out, I'd love for him to go out on loan.
Hopefully he is fitter/stronger and mature enough to live alone.
Regular footy will improve him a lot.

Rafael could also play there if need be, might prefer it if he can cut in for a shot on his right more. I suppose with vidic back next season it means smalling an jones can get games at right back and rafael and evra at left back. Although I would say that attackingly rafael offers a lot more than smalling and jones. But this way everyone can get good game time. And if we sign a midfielder there will probably be less room for jones in the middle.

Presume loaning him out means we have Clyne in the bag. I still have high hopes for Fabio (you don't start the Champions League final and still be a rubbish player), he just needs a regular run of games as he got last year and stay clear of long term of injuries.

Almost 100%? No.

I won't be surprised if we don't sign a full-back.

I like when we properly plan a loan for a player like this. It means it's far more likely that the player goes to the right club for the season.

It's the loans of deadline day that tend to be a let down. Macheda and Rossi spring to mind.

Yep, important that it is the right club for him

Now which club that is, I don't know, you'd think they'd look at a side like Swansea, as they try and get it on the floor

It's not guaranteed he'd start - Rangel and Taylor have been impressive.

Wigan, if they stay up, could be a good training ground.

I really don't see the point in loaning out Fabio.

FIrstly, he's already had a run in the first team and proven he has the ability to do a good job. Last season he was our first choice right back for the last 15 or so games and played in some huge games(Chelsea, CL semi finals, and CL final).

Secondly, there is also a spot for him to be used on the left flank covering for Evra where he played most of his football for United, prior to that run in the side last season. If we ever had any issues down the right, he's proven he can do a job there as well.

Thirdly, he's in his earlier 20's and probably would have benefited from this more a couple of years back. Now he can develop with our first team.

For me, he should be getting games for United as a squad player. He's more than good enough and only niggling injuries have held him back. This is particilarly odd considering JOS was sold on last year.

Of course we will. We don't have enough at the moment, let alone when we let one of them go. Rafael and Evra will basically be the only natural full backs at the club, with Jones capable of playing there. Smalling shouldn't be used at full back.

Tend to agree with this. I don't what Fergie has against Fabio, or why he's so determined to play Evra in every game. Has Evra really been that good in the last couple of years?

I actually think he is becoming a bit of a liability defensively, although still a threat in attack.

I tend to think SAF comments about developing like his twin he maybe talking about the physical side and playing every week may help, ability wise I think he is ahead of Rafael already and I think Rafael is a fantastic prospect

I'm not sure if he could get games at a Premier League club. Not many Premier League clubs can afford the luxury of having such an attacking full back.

I don't think Fergie has anything against Fabio. He gave him a long run in the side last season. This season he has suffered alot of niggling injuries and with the lack of FA Cup and CL games, Evra does not need the rests. It's just I don't see the point in doing it for next season when we have no cover at left back and when Fabio has an opportunity to build on the season before. He's already had a decent run in the side, done a good job, is the right age to play more often and there is a squad place perfect for him. That's what makes no sense.

I don't like this tbh.Next season should have been the season where Fabio was slowly going to win his place (in my fantasy world at least) in the starting line-up.SAF seems to trust Evra way too much

Its evident that we are getting another fullback.

A loan would benefit fabio, but as others have said you have to wonder if it means we are buying in another one, since otherwise we seem very thin on the ground. I suppose between Rafael, evra, smalling, jones and possibly Valencia and Evans we have options, but only two are natural full backs.

Why would be sign a full back when we already have a full back that we're loaning out to make room for the new full back that we don't need because we already have a full back?

Does he play right back? Wouldn't mind taking him on a season long loan if he can. Neville and Hibbert are getting on a bit now and Coleman can play both on the wing and at full back. He would provide good cover for Baines and i could see him starting a few games at right back if he is proficient enough to play there. Baines is an attacking fullback too so Fabio could learn from him.

I think Everton would be a good place for him to come - Moyes would make him defend diciplined enough, and he's a good attacking threat. Right-footed so can easily play RB. He's a really good full-back IMO.

I expect he'll go to benfica as part of the gaitan deal. It is announced now so that it appears to be on our terms and in the interest of the player rather than simply as using him as a pawn in a transfer deal.

Yes he does. He started off playing on the right but moved to the left so that he wasn't competing with his brother for the same spot. He's played right back for us quite a few times last season and I think he would do well at Everton.

If we sign a new full back then we will actually have four genuine full backs, which is the sensible number of full backs to have, especially when two of those full backs have horrendous injury records.

Everyone knows you can't separate the twins, so it looks like he'll go to City to compete with Zabaleta and Clichy. He'll get more games than here I guess.

Cheers guys. Yes, i think he could do well here if he was given game time and Moyes didn't try to restrict his attacking game too much, but as you say marjen, he would definitely come back a better defensive player after being with us. Having to defend a lot more would make him stronger mentally and physically.

Thing is, he's actually a more diciplined defender by nature than Rafael - Rafael is possible even more aggressive, and a bigger attacking threat, though.

I don't get it...why not just play him in our team as cover for Evra?

I can see positives and negatives of this loan move, but i'm not sure which outweighs the other.

We place a lot of trust in Evra's ability to stay fit and perform consistently. Unless we buy, not having another left back here is a risk. It will be interesting to see whether Fryers get's the odd game while Fabio hopefully get's some consistent action elsewhere.

Why not just put him in the team full stop ? It would be difficult for him to make many more mistakes that cost us goals than Evra has done this season. And I'd have thought he'd offer us just as much going forward as Patrice.

Evra was brilliant today, and very rarely unfit, so we can seemingly afford the luxury.

Dont see why SAFs not willing to have him as cover for Evra tbh, he's easily good enough. that said, a loan move and regular starts would be ideal for him now..

Think it has a lot to do with him being right footed actually. With both young and nani preferring to cut in, SAF wants someone who'l go on the overlap and put in crosses. Need a left footed LB for that which fabio isnt. and with rafael doing so well at RB and having jones and smalling as cover there, there really is no place there.

He needs to be added into the 25 man squad, we can't keep him here hoping Evra gets injured and letting Fabio get a run of games. He's much better off being sent on loan to a club which can guarantee him 30-40 games as long as he's fit. A good season of loan would do him a lot of good.

I believe this could be a do or break loan deal for him, if he proves he can stay healthy and contribute to a team, he'll be ready to challenge for a spot when he come back from loan and Evra is another year older.

If he can't stay fit, he will be sold soon.
