FA Youth Cup 4th round vs Chelsea

Gomes isn't really a proper winger either though is he? I'd still throw him in there anyway as he will look to take his man on and drive an attack. There is simply nothing other than Rashford at the moment, so something needs to be switched up.
Don't think Gomes would take on his man and drive an attack. He's a bit passive.

I've only seen him a few times but hes been great at making space and forcing some play when I've seen him.
From what I've seen, he's obviously capable of doing it and shows it, but he also tends to be a bit passive despite having the ability to influence the play more.

What will they do to change this? Not this particular game. Is the scouting at academy level that bad, that they are not picking up the quality kids? Does the coaching staff need a complete overhaul?

I thought that a complete overhaul was on the cards and that we were building a small stadium for the youth teams, or did I dream that?

Supposedly. It could take years for it to bear fruit. Maybe it is just a bad batch of kids. The record at U-18 level is awful, haven't they just lost 10 on the trot or something mad?

Not really this is one of the best batch from us recently. Results at this level doesn't mean much. The way they play the game at this level can be quite annoying though.

Completely outclassed, Chelsea have so much more talent than us but be interesting to see how many actually get a chance in their first team.

Recruitment at every level at united is a problem at the moment, from managers to the first team down to academy players and staff, in truth I think we are clueless and will have problems throughout the club until something changes.

Surely many of the structures that SAF left could not have been removed a couple of years after he left?

Another stick to beat us with you mean? If it makes the club look at themselves from the very top to the bottom then maybe some good will come of it.

Well some changes have already happened at the lower age groups so it's not like the club isn't as aware about the issues as the journalists.Still lack of a real leader though, Woodman's subordinates need to stay as far away from the academy as possbile imo.

They likely are aware, but why have we again let it get like this? They should have been looking to change things constantly. Looking at different scouting methods, coaching methods etc. If it ain't broken syndrome, but it now looks like it was.

At least the club are seemingly acknowledging that we have a problem, if they can get it sorted then there should only be minor damage done long term.

The thing I don't begin to understand is why they have let it get so bad, I heard we are putting only a few million into it every year, surely we'd be better trimming our transfer budget by 10-20 % and putting this into the academy if money for it is so tight, by the sounds it would make a massive difference.

It's not just ferguson though, gill and Mclair as well have all left and either not been replaced or replaced by someone inferiorreplaced plus trying to keep the model of one man controlling everything doesn't work when you change manager regularly and that man isn't ferguson.

Missed this one but it looks like we were given a masterclass in football by Chelsea. Who impressed today?

Well it does take time for any change to take effect do they?Looking at Arsenal U18s last year, they were bottom in the Tier 3 group and every youth football watchers said their academy is sinking. This year they bought a lot of quality foreign imports and things looked good again.

I actually don't like the way they usually play games under McGuinness as it often look like they make things harder for themselves but since he's highly rated and I don't know that much about develop players at this age so I would trust him completely.Usually these type of performances are unacceptable and won't be found under Joyce.

Got to hope LvG being there to witness this will motivate him to having more input in the running of the academy. By some accounts Moyes was unimpressed with the structure and work began to change but that was put on the back-burner while the first team was undergoing upheaval.

I think the main issue is that we haven't focused on recruitment as much as we should have and lost out on a lot of talent to clubs like City and Chelsea. While we have a batch of really talented players, we just dont have the number presently in the reserves to put out strong reserves and U-18 teams.

We are promoting the academy players to the Reserves as soon they are ready to step up, leaving the U-18's short in numbers, especially with all the injuries to key players.

I don't think we should worry much about the results, probably strengthen them mentally more than anything else.

5-1. just checked the United Website. Oh, how well they have hidden it.

We never record any academy results on our website. It's a policy.

Edit - We report them we just don't keep records.

The fact that we were destroyed 1-5 by Chelsea and are losing every game has very little to do with the mess the academy is in - it has more to do with the fact that we simply have a very poor group of players, and a very unbalanced side - in addition to the fact that their confidence probably is 3 levels below Chelseas.

And no - I don't doubt the academy is in problems - but I fear the results of that won't be visible for a couple of years.

Abraham is an absolute monster at this level. Scored 38/39 last season at the age of 16 and is doing even better this season. Da Silva and Aina are both great fullbacks as well, both been in the youth team for a while now. Funnily enough, Charly Musonda and Dominic Solanke both could have played in this fixture but the former is training with the first team and the latter is out on loan.

I wish we actually brought these guys through. Its hard to watch United being through Lingard/Januzaj Ect. When our own guys have been frequently outclassing them every season.

No you haven't. Bar the 2012 semi final first leg, 2014 21s final and last night we have been the better team nearly every game we've had at u18/21 level that I've seen. More importantly you've had no one as talented in your academy as Januzaj or Pereira or maybe even Wilson. Lingards 18s group absolutely outclassed yours at the time.

Wouldn't be surprised if we got more first team players out of this group than you will either.
