FA Cup 24/25 | 5th round: 1st March

Based on what exactly?
He's a 2-time winner of FIFA's GK of the year and has been instrumental for his successful teams (Argentina and Aston Villa). In retrospect it's really tragic how we let Raya and Martinez slip. And they'd have gone for around half the price we paid for Onana. It's a position we really need to upgrade on in the summer.

I'm talking about the here and now. It wasn't a question of who's had the better career. Martinez has a good reputation but he's not an elite keeper as some seem to believe.

Onana's not the best keeper in the league by any means but this season Martinez has less clean sheets, let in more goals from less xGA by some margin and has a lower save %. Maybe none of that matters. How is he a better keeper in your opinion?

Martinez has recently won FIFA's best goalkeeper award for 2 seasons in a row. That's pretty much here and now.

He's had far fewer clangers than Onana over the past 2 seasons. He's also helped his teams to great success instead of hindering their progression, like Onana has. Psychologically for the team, Martinez visibly instils more confidence in his teammates.

Martinez may not be elite like keepers of yesteryear (that I agree), but Onana is a very low bar.

I can't say I put much weight behind those types of awards personally.

You're right, errors leading to goals in the PL is pretty much the only area Martinez comes out on top this season where he has 1 to Onana's 3.

He performed better overall than Onana last year but that's just not the case this season so far.

Things could change over the rest of the season, obviously, but the contention that he's one of the main reasons for Villa's success vs United's doesn't ring true, which is what started this in the first place. Villa are higher in the league because they're better in attack than United despite having conceded more goals.

Based on my eyes. There's no one other than a very small proportion of United fans who genuinely think Onana is better than Martinez.

Right.

But you obviously watch more United games and are more invested in the result's of those games which can skew our perception.

Unless you're going to tell me you've watch all of Villa's games this season. Martinez has dropped off quite a bit on last year it would seem while, granted, he has dropped less clangers.

I don't need to watch every Villa game to know Onana is not very good.

11 out of 20 PL teams left in competition, though Palace (away to Doncaster) and Forest (away to Exeter) yet to play over next 2 days. Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham out.

Draw for 5th round to take place tomorrow at 7.10pm GMT.

We need a bit of luck to win this again. Need some easy draws and somebody else to turf City out. Even then we could get done by a lower league side. You never know, we seem to be better in cups. I’d rather win Europa.

City is probably one of the Pl teams we could beat this year. More worried about Newcastle, Bournemouth and Brighton

This forum is sthg else...

Martinez has been on VERY great form since more than three seasons so far. Recently he has had more games than he should where he combined great saves with some mistakes, some even silly, yet mostly his biggest issue and more concerning issue has been a more passive approach that feels weird with such an active and comanding keeper in a team that needs that like water in the dessert. This last game he was the usual best self, specially in big games.

Yet to plain call him not a great keeper, that he is not a vital factor for Villa or that he didn't deserved to the very least be nominated to some of the awards he actually won, it's going a bit too much over the top.
He is a great keeper, he has been having enjoying quite an enduring great form both in his club and the NT that at certain point would inevitable have some sort of dip....that clearly it's not THAT deep or worse that he never had quality

The excuses they keep making for Liverpool. So far I’ve heard the pitch, argyle’s new manager bounce, injury disruption, 9 changes and the fact that Liverpool have other things going on besides this game.

If United were on the verge of going out to a championship side there’d be none of that.

Just wait for the media such as scouse loving press and Talkshite making excuses for them

A non PL team away would be fun...

Well apart from Millwall.

Really good opportunity now for someone to win other than one of the big boys.

This is suddenly looking very winnable. No Liverpool, no Arsenal, no Chelsea, no Spurs...

I hope we avoid a crappy draw like Newcastle or Villa away.

Think we need a home tie against Preston, Cardiff, or Plymouth (maybe not)

It's a long shot for us to win this, but I suppose it was last season. Hoping there's some all Premier League ties between the better ones like City, Newcastle, Forest*, Bournemouth, Villa etc. But we'll probably get one of them anyway.

I might be clutching at straws / relying on false hope, but I just keep telling myself the more training time and games we get, the more the players will improve to play this style. Towards the end of the season we might have more chance at winning matches so I'm hopeful we can get through another round against a lesser side.

I'd love Plymouth. Easy fixture and there's the added benefit of knowing the scousers would be fuming that they missed out on the opportunity to knock us out.

We need either a home draw against non-PL side or an away draw against PL side. We struggled against Southampton and Leicester at home so would obviously struggle against any other PL side as well.

We got Arsenal away in 3rd round and Leicester in 4th round so deserved easier draw now but probably won't happen.

I am going for Villa away i know Rashford can't play against us but feel the balls will be heated up to arrange this

Agreed deserve it but won't happen. I'll gladly take another struggle so long as United progress to the next round.
