Merc pull a rabbit out of the hat- a unique steering innovation called DAS (Dual Axis Steering), apparently pre-cleared by the FIA. If you pull or push on the steering it realigns the wheels by changing the toe angle.

It's a really clever solution, can't be easily copied either so you have to wonder how hard other teams will fight it. Mercedes seem to think it's all legal and have cleared it with the FIA, I'd love to know how much it gives them.

Merc have really pulled something out of the bag with this.
Sounds so simple, why has it not been done before.
There is already stuff on Facebook and other sites, says it should be banned and its illigal.
I bet other teams Ferrari and Redbull are already planning their protests.

Mercedes have no concerns over the legality of the new steering system which was spotted on their Formula 1 car during testing today.
Onboard footage from the W11 showed Lewis Hamilton moving the wheel towards himself at the pit lane exit and away again as he approached turn one. He repeated the process at other points around the Circuit de Catalunya.

The footage prompted speculation over exactly what the device is controlling. Speaking to media in an FIA press conference at the track, technical director James Allison revealed little of the operation of the device.

“I probably won’t shed a great deal more light than what you saw on the TV,” he said. “But we have a system in the car, it’s a novel idea. We’ve got a name for it, it’s called DAS. And it just introduces an extra dimension for steering for the driver we’re hopefully will be useful during the year.

“But precisely how we use it, where we use it, that’s something we’ll keep to ourselves.

Asked whether he was concerned it could be ruled illegal, Allison said “not really.”

Mercedes call their novel steering system ‘DAS’“This isn’t news to the FIA,” he added. “It’s something we have been talking to them about for some time. The rules are pretty clear about what’s permitted on steering systems and we feel confident that it matches all of those requirements.”

Hamilton said he has no concerns over the safety of the system. “I’ve only had one morning with it so I don’t have a lot to really talk about it. We’re just trying to get on top of it, trying to understand it.

“But safety-wise no problem today. The FIA are OK with the project. For me it’s really encouraging to see my team is continuing to innovate and stay ahead of the game and I think that’s just down to the great minds we have working in this team.”

I'm a little unclear over this - it just looks like it adds another thing for the driver to worry about whilst driving! Will try and listen to the explainer later and see if it clears it up!

I was thinking the same, if its just altering the toe angle, getting better tyre wear and FIA say it is legal, this is a real game changer and the other teams will be seething.
Merc say FIA have been aware of it for a while, could be just one of those things that Merc have invented ( for want of a better word) first.

Looks like a pretty neat system. That's a fairly big adjustment of the wheels as well so surely that would give a huge advantage both in tire wear and cornering speeds.

Looks like a simple thing to do, change the toe angle, but with massive benefits, the other teams will not like it.
In theory they can run more toe in corners and eliminate it for straight line advantage and tyre temperatures

Suspect the argument will be it changes the aerodynamics of the car which is think is banned .... Will be interesting to see how legal the challenges get or if the other teams think they can quickly copy it.

I almost hope it does not give too big an advantage (e.g. brawn double diffuser) or the seasons as good as over already

I dont think it changes the aerodynamic of the car, from what I have seen, all it does in simple terms is change how much rubber in on the track.
I agree with you about to much of an advantage, I can see this DAS going the same was as the DD , because others cant get it to work , they will want it banned.

Suspect there is a (very) slight aero advantage to removing the toe on the straights
And if the system complies with the steering mechanism rules I expect the other teams to go after it on aero rules.

.The benefits of that are better tyre life, better cornering and it acts as a drag reduction system.

And they are already the team to beat anyway, so in terms of excitement for the season ahead then it was definitely the "wrong" team that invented this thing. Would have been a lot more interesting if a team outside the top 3 came up with it and the big dogs couldn't get it to work on their cars.

Red Bull adviser Marko believes it is illegal. Now there is no shock in this, Ferrari will also say the same.
I doubt for one minute that Mercedes have not developed this without making sure it will be legal.

F1 is a capitalism at its finest: those most effecting at bringing in loads of money are also the ones to (attempt) bend the rules the most, because the repurcusions for them are likely to be minimal. Thats not to say that teams shouldn't attempt to push the envelope of course but had a lesser team done this they likely would have launched a full scale investigation already.

They literally worked with the FIA to make sure they were legal, but now have been banned for 2021. Shocker.Wonder if the same conclusion would be reached if it was Ferrari with the mod..

Watching season 1 of Drive to Survive on Netflix, very good.
Max comes over as a cock, but quite liking Horner in it.

See I was gonna say opposite on Horner. Especially when it came to Cyril he came across rather childish to me but I know I’m in minority here.

I mean, Binotto himself didn't build it did he?

Ferrari seem to me to be heading into the dark days of the early 90's when they lurched from one bad idea to the next before di Montezemelo came in and brought Todt, Brawn, Byrne and Schumacher with him.

No, but the state of him for an official photo.
