Expectations for the New Season

If we sign the right players and have better luck with injuries, I think we might end up closer to the top than, something around 80 points and a good run in the EL. One thing I've seen in football over and over is that sometimes you're few decisions away from closing a big gap. Liverpool were terrible last year due to key injuries and also losing Mane, then they made some decent signings and kicked on the following season.

A lot has went wrong last season, something as simple as having Martinez available all year would've resulted in how many points?

I'm optimistic.

For me, it's a consistent style of play. By the end of the season I want to be able to see what the plan is.

A positive goal difference in the league. A midfield that other teams don't stroll through. A defence that features the same players on a regular basis.

A man can dream I suppose.

Too early for this. Depends on transfers, both incoming and outgoing, and what other teams do. There's a lot of transfer window to go. It hasn't even started yet.

Wow the snark in this thread. Fair to assume that for many of you expectations are at rock bottom? I for one am hopefully optimistic about a new season (as I am every season it must be said) in which we have a decent structure above the manager and less crippling injuries to deal with.

Realistic expectation: an unsatisfying summer window where we don’t get all/most of the players we actually need, but improve in one or two positions, mainly due to the club leadership being unwilling to start moving on player targets until everyone is in place at the top. 5th place in the league with a generally improved performance level, a deep domestic cup run and the QF’s or SF’s of the Europa.

Hopeful expectation: We get improvements in at CB, CM & a forward, plus free flowing football now we have Martinez and Shaw back. Pool, Chelsea & Newcastle have stinkers and we get 3rd, another domestic cup win, and maybe a Europa league.

No chance of the title but winning the Europa League and retaining the Cup would be great.

We are Manchester United. Where are our standards?

1. Minimum 2nd place finish
2. One cup
3. Whack all teams at home
4. Whack weaker teams away

As long as we see:
1. No Casemiro (loved the guy for his first 8 months but the decline has been shocking)
2. No Eriksen (apart from in the occasional Europa League group game)
3. No AWB (unless it's a game with a must need man-marking job on a LW e.g. vs Doku)
4. Rashford tracking back
5. No Onana howlers

Then I'll be happy.

Realise this is a lot to ask for, especially point 4 & 5.

With decent recruitment and a favourable injury list we might land 4th. Haven’t seen anything in our style of play to suggest that though, even with our better plays fit and/or against ‘lesser’ teams.

In reality I suspect we’ll be still be shit on all counts and nab 7th.

Top 4 and/or Europa , more consistent and less ridiculous results/performances. Finishing 4th in the league is not better than winning Europa , especially if you finish only a few points off 4th but win Europa. This top 4 “trophy” mindset needs to change. If you are not first or closely second, your league campaign is relatively redundant other then getting a CL spot. Winning trophies is better way to grow the club then “look at us finishing 3rd/4th in the league”.

It’s ironic how some people would accuse some fans of lowering standards and they would consider finishing 4th better than winning one of the few cups anybody can win. I’m still buzzing from the FA cup win, don’t think I’d be feeling that had we finished 4th. Football is as much about memorable moments as anything else, shame lots of people can’t let themselves just enjoy the ride, as painful as it can be at times.

Less injuries as presumably the review included looking at why we got such injuries and concluded it wasn’t anything ETH was doing.

What I’m hoping for is a finish that is no lower than 4th and for us to win a trophy. Getting into the Europa League semi finals at least. And also not playing like a bunch of headless chickens.

Top 2 finish, we should at least aim to be on Arsenal's level. Europa league winners.

If we could consistently play like we did in that FA Cup final, there's no reason why we couldn't finish in the top 2, especially with some new signings joining.

The biggest signing the club could make this summer is a new physio/fitness team.

You hire best people in their roles, keep the squad fit and top 4 should be the minimum.

Over to INEOS now on recruitment. The manager saga is over, now get him the tools to push on.

Same thing as every season Pinky.
Top 4 and world domination.

Don’t concede as many shots.
Goal difference needs to be + double figures.
Ideally make it hard for teams to come to Old Trafford again.
Some kind of style to our play.
Should go quite far in Europe.
Get behind why we got so many injuries this season.
Rashford to run, might be asking too much with that one though.

We have no idea what the summer looks like so it's pointless to discuss expectations - If we bring hardly anybody in and shift nobody the expectations change compared to us clearing the deadwood and bringing in a good amount of quality players

I agree with most on here. We have to win the Europa league, establish a good style of play and finish strong in the league (top 3).

It was a very specific game plan which can only be acceptable and be employed against very few top teams .

It cannot be United's go to strategy and if it is we would struggle to get top 4 let alone finish top 2 even with new signings .

Maybe a top 5 finish now? The summer signings are crucial IMO

Finally the manager part of things is settled. The powers that be chose stability and now that this will be his third season in charge with the humongous investments made till date, what would be the expectations?

For me top two finish and Europa League would be the expectation. Don't really care about domestic cups.

How can you expect us to finish in the top two?

Arsenal and City are way ahead of us and they will strengthen in the Summer. We simply don't have the resources to close the gap.

This season will be hugely difficult, with Europa League and the league to contend with. We might even have to win the Europa League to get in the UCL.

TH to come out and say we can and will strive to play like Ajax.
Hopefully we have a good transfer window with at least 4 new players in and half a dozen out.
Surely top 4 has to be a minimum requirement and hopefully another trophy.

I would love to be proved wrong, and to see EtH figure out how to organise the team so that we're not giving away 30 shots per game, and so that Hojlund gets more than one chance per match. If he can figure this out and if Ineos can scrape together some money and make some decent signings then maybe we can make a good top 4 challenge!

More realistically, I imagine we'll finish 6th or thereabouts if Ten Hag gets some decent signings and we can keep the injuries to a minimum. Maybe we can make another final too...if we can avoid coming across Coventry again.

Imagine having such a poor season and only being 8 points of top 4. So yes, if we have players fit, we can easily make 10 points up, let alone get more than that.

Its funny fans like you only watched 30 mins of the FA cup run, forgot we played Liverpool and City.

Top 4 and the Europa League final.

But it can only be achieved through a good transfer strategy. There are too many holes to fill in our team and plenty of players have near-expired contract.

Next season will be much harder for Ten Hag, unfortunately.

Quality control
What Manchester United should expect:
  • Europa League
  • Good run in the domestic cups
  • +30 GD in the league
  • 80+ points or within 7/8 points off 1st
  • Good football where we dominate the small and medium teams, and are practical against the big ones
  • No lop-sided losses against rivals
What we'll get with Glazers MKII and a manager where it's never his fault
  • Shit football, goal difference won't improve
  • Get dominated in big games or just defend as if we're a small fry club
  • More excuses by deluded fans, especially if we have a few injuries again

My expectations are fairly low. Coherence and moderate competitiveness.

It's very hard to keep improving or even remain in place. Arsenal have had two very good league campaigns, it wouldn't be surprising if they fall back a bit in 24/25. Especially after two consecutive disappointments.

We have to win the Europa League, simple as that. Top 6 and Europa League would be progress. Depending on how the summer spending goes, top 4 and Europa.

This has started early.
I don't even know which players are leaving and which ones are staying :o

Exactly, when people say why cant we finish top 2? If United can get 3/4 right transfers that fit into the first 11, we were only 9 points of 4th in our worst season.

So essentially, we should get a minimum of 10 more points next season. Then, if we can manage to keep our important players fit for longer and sign another ST, we can hopefully score more goals and then we are looking at what 6/7 more wins to get us pushing to 3rd.

Anything can happen, we can start the season with 5/6 straight wins and wins bring confidence and we can see where that can take us.

I just see players who won’t deserve to play will play, our keeper will keep making blunders and unless we buy a real top quality defensive midfielder and CB to replace Varane we’ll probably do well to get 6th place as opposition teams will continue to slice through us with ease.

Very much doubt we make it three FA cup finals in a row so maybe a good run in League cup again is the most I see happening and our best route to a trophy.

In reality though we should 100% be making the top 4 as a minimum and that should only not be deemed a sackable offence for ten Hag if we win the Europa league. I see neither happening unfortunately.

I’m more interested to see how the new regime act off the field and how they eventually trim the squad with our overpaid and under talented players being shown the door and then overtime build a technically sound squad capable of keeping the ball and challenging again.

Top 4 finish and more consistency in play an clear progress.

This, plain and simple.

Clear progress in our style of play is imperative, and that needs to reflect at least somewhat in the league performances.

Winning Europa or another domestic cup is fine and all but certainly would not be something I judge him on next season if it's similar to this one.

Top 4 finish and more consistency in play an clear progress.
This. (maybe a cup as well)

I think anything more is unreasonable /unrealistic.

We are behind Arsenal, city and liverpool in terms of squad and first team. Very few of our players would get into these teams.
