Expectations for season 2023/2024

No more dropped points against silly opponents, resulting in an 80 points plus season. Not good enough against the biggest teams, but CL quarter finals, cups at least semis, top 4 finish.

I don’t want to sound overly pessimistic but I think we’ll do well to stay top 4. I think City and Arsenal will be uncatchable. Can we hold off all the other usual suspects? Newcastle will be solid and difficult to beat again I think. Liverpool are strengthening and Chelsea will be much improved under Poch and with no European football.

We did really well last season but still lots to do this summer transfer window. Shame, if the club sale hadn’t been such a farce I’d have been more optimistic.

Zero here until the club future is sorted out. If that somehow happens soon and we can get more than Mount, Onana, and a B striker....I think we can make some noise and get 2nd - 4th.

If the ownership thing rumbles on into the season, it's going to be massively disruptive. Not necessarily from a line up point of view - more from every conversation, interview, protests etc dominating the headlines and distracting everybody.

Think Liverpool will be strong out of the blocks this year - its a cycle on year plus they were rested over the summer they'll be much better than they were last season. Mickey Mousers and City biggest threat to finish above us, and I think they probably will unfortunately. Arsenal have a few new 'big' players to bed in, and pressure on them to repeat or do better than last season - cant see them being consistent this year results-wise and the press will be all over them for their big spend and worse performances/results - it will be us, Chelsea and Arsenal competing for 3rd and 4th - think we'll concede less and score more than we have for quite a few seasons, Poch and Chelsea to be flat track bullies and Arsenal will finish 5th.

League - 3rd
FA Cup - Win
Milk Cup - Win/retain
CL - Group winners, either the last 16 or the quarters we'll be out early 2024

Domestic cup double, CL football and a summer break without drama next season would be great.

As it stands.

Consolidating top 4.
Knockout stages of CL.
Deep cup runs.
More consistent performances.

This is the only sensible target.

Add to this to play decent football whilst doing it.

- Mentality of the squad to improve - i.e no more crumbling in games and getting battered.
- Better away record against the top teams.
- Comfortably in the top 4 all season and hopefully a lot closer to the top.
- Real progression/fluidity in our style of play. More goals.
- Hopefully a domestic cup.
- Quarters of CL.

How can you talk about expectations if we still don't have a striker for next season. We are the only (top 10) team that significantly underperformed in terms of goals scored against expected goals and until we have that thing addressed, I "expect" us to struggle in top 4 battle.

W28 D6 L9 is a really solid first season. Really it's just cutting out some of the silly dropped points and, most importantly, we have to score more goals.
We won't win it this year but we have to be in a position where it's realistic next year so I think as a rather arbitrary target it's an 80+ point season and at least getting to the 2 goal a game GF 76 goals.

Everyone wants improvement of course and we will have to improve just to stand still because Liverpool, Newcastle and Chelsea will be better than last season.

It's difficult to make predictions until the squads are finalised, but reasonable expectations would be:
  • Don't go backwards in the league - maintain a top 3 position, ahead of (presumably) Newcastle, Liverpool, Spurs & Chelsea (may require 80+ pts).
  • Win the FA Cup/League Cup.
  • Progress at least as far as the last 16 of the Champions League.

should be 23 wins not 28

Here we go again. After last season where, imo we did good, Erik will get players on all 3 positions where he wanted. Mount is done, Onana more or less done and probably Hojlund, ETH will have team according to his wishes. Our first 11 will look very strong and depth could be better but it is not THAT bad with Garnacho, Sancho, Eriksen, Lindelof and AWB.

What do you want/expect from next season? For me, good season would be winning a cup, next round in CL and go above 80 points in PL (which will lead to title challenge i guess).

I like the way you mention a target in the league as a points-target. The rank depends not only on us, does it? And 80 sounds a reasonable and also challenging enough one, I would say! We would achieve that by being as solid as last season at Old Traffod and by keeping the ball better away from home and giving the home teams a different way to have to deal with us.

I would target the domestic cups in a game-to-game way. And yes, CL has to be about at least going past the group stage.

My expectations depend on who will get as a striker.

Hoijlund / Muani
Top 4
Good runs in the domestic cups
UCL QF

Kane / Osimhem
Title challenge
Win one of the domestic cups
UCL SF

- more consistent football and no big defeats
- improve away record

Some bold predictions

We will finish 2nd and win the League Cup again. Maybe about 7/8 points better off than last season. We'll also get to the Quarter Finals of the Champions League.

city will walk the league.

The pressure and increased expectation will have an impact on Arsenal. They'll just about secure Champions League qualification in May.

Newcastle will struggle to match last seasons league form but will go further than expected in the Champions League.

Liverpool will struggle again, and around March, Klopp will announce he's leaving at the end of the season.

Luton will be a surprise package and finish well clear of relegation

Chelsea will finish 3rd and Arsenal in 4th.

Brentford and Brighton will struggle to match last season. Villa will improve again and probably get to the later stages of the Conference League (maybe even going on to win it).

I think we will be much better than last, season, couple of trophies at least.

Can you imagine what the scenes would be like if we got another treble.

I have absolute faith in ETH and what he is doing, he is a total revelation and the difference since he has come in is remarkable.

75 to 80 points/3rd or 4th in the league table.

Win the FA Cup or league cup if avoid Man City.

Quarter final spot at best in the CL.

Not overly optimistic because I believe we still lack depth and quality outside of the starting 11. Also bedding in a new keeper and probably new striker are two areas that are most important to the chances of a successful campaign.

Two untested players in the toughest league is a risk, make no mistake about it. If they settle well and produce then I think there is a good chance of a decent run in the cups and enough to finish top 4. If however both struggle, especially the GK do they have the mental fortitude to cope with added scrutiny and pressure and backlash to deal with it. I've felt for a while the one thing Utd have lacked a lot is character. Heads often drop when Utd go behind and I'm not convinced that will be any better this season. I still expect difficulties on the road and a struggle to score goals.

Why not try enjoy the season. We are ahead of where we should be under ten Haag. We are going through a takeover. I would be with happy with top4, trophy again and closing the gap a little.

Surely this is a bit of a low target? Thats only 5 points more than we had this season.

Arsenal are stronger and further into their project, Liverpool appear to be addressing key areas, City will always be strong.

For me, another season of clear tactical progression and a top four spot would be fine. We have had false dawns before, and then gotten carried away. Slow and steady progress is fine for me, it's a 3-5 year project.

Genuinely zero expectations. I don't see much change without a no.9. With Liverpool and Chelsea better, we will do well to make top 4.

With an even vaguely able striker, if all went brilliantly, we could have a little spell mixing it at the top of the league, getting everyone very giddy.
We've seen how people can get even when we were in 3rd and a few points off top if we won our game in hand etc...

However, the glass ceiling is probably 2nd, but 5th wouldn't be impossible to see either.

Fight for top 4, no trophies. Currently I think it’s going to be a real struggle next season. Wouldn’t be that shocked if we find ourselves outside the top 5 next season.

FA Cup or EFL Cup with top4 would be a good season. Hoping City wont win PL this season.

If we can keep Onana Mount Casemiro Bruno and Rashford fit I fancy us to challenge hard this season. Top 4 for sure. We’ve recruited well since ETH has come in. I think Martinez and Antony will be even better this season. I’ve a feeling Sancho could be a real asset too if he has a good preseason. We have really good players. Just missing that talisman or spark up front and a bit of cover.

Honestly hoping for a respectable title challenge, a domestic cup win, and last four in the CL. But so much will depend on the rest of the window. We need to free up funds by selling unwanted players. We need another CB to replace an outgoing Maguire and we need a striker, badly. Not a stop gap measure but a proper striker. We are going to have to spend big bucks to get one but if we can shift Telles, Bailly, Maguire, Elanga, one of McFred, and VdB, then it can happen. And must happen. We need a reliable goalscorer, with Martial as back up.

I’m expecting another good season from Rashford, an improvement from Sancho, a big step forward from Antony (who I apparently rate much higher than others on here). Garnacho will have a big role to play, and I think Amad can offer nice depth and variety. But we need a CF. Martial is a player I like but cannot be relied on with his injuries. Needs to stay as back up for one more season.

We came third with Weghorst as our main CF, and won a domestic cup and lost another only because of poor keeping. I can’t remember the last time we had a proper reliable CF.

Impossible to say until who we know who's on the roster.

But I will say that in light of ETH accomplished with a squad that was unsettled at best and still came in third, if we can add a genuinely respectable striker and of course if our new keeper needs no bedding in, there's no reason why we can't be in the PL title race at least through the beginning of April -- the time when Arsenal historically fall apart but also when City hit fifth gear.

Based on what we know now I'll take the following:

Second in the PL
SF in the CL
Winning one of the two domestic cups

Our defensive record was decent last season but we need to score more goals. Sancho and Antony need breakout seasons and if they do there's no reason why we can't have City looking over their shoulder to keep tabs on us.

I think a title challenge will depend on how other teams approach playing City.

After we won the treble in 99 EVERY club fought against us tooth and nail to try and get a scrap of glory.

However I have a sneaky feeling that a lot of teams will just mail it in against city, so they could just streak away into an unassailable lead.

I hope I'm wrong and we get the excitement of challenging for the title. I'd expect that we run out of legs like Arsenal did, unless we make some amazing January signings or sneak in a last minute big name striker.

I think we will still have an occasional hammering when things just go wrong, but I'd accept the same sort of outcome as last season, but hopefully controlling possession much more and making much more progress as a team.

Title challenge and if not, within 7/8 points max behind. 80 goals scored target. At least last 16 Champions Lge. Good run in domestic cups, obviously depends who we meet in the rounds.

Top 3 and significant progress in dominating matches and playing attractive football. Any trophies are a bonus.

We won’t challenge for the title or CL without a proven goal scorer. I’d be happy to upgrade our ‘third tier trophy’ Carabao cup for a ‘second tier’ FA Cup or EL assuming we don’t get to knock outs of CL.
Just progress basically.

I would like a stronger mental collective attitude in games when the games are not going in the teams favour. Too many times last season we seemed to collapse when we went a goal down.
