If we do sign him this summer he surely will get the number 4.. With Jones possibly getting # 6..

Although it would read #4 Banega right?

Doubt it, plays with Ever on his shirt at Valencia and for Argentina. Although he's 21 at Valencia and I think 20 for Argentina

No not at all, it would be a great rule to bring in though

Saves people getting their feelings hurt

Alright. Well we definitely havent been linked with him.

But there is reason enough to hope that he might be one of the many players we sign where its kept under the radar till the last minute. Its wishful thinking and I dont think anyone is unaware of that

Clubs linked with Banega

This summer :

Inter
Napoli (According to devilish)

1 season ago :

Liverpool
Inter

2 seasons ago :

Schalke
Everton (loan)

banega seems to have the skill to pass the ball as well as the physicality for the Premiership. whether he can step up, hard to tell, just like in the case of Sanchez. hope to hear more comments on him.

He he he....looking back, that was insane. It had a life of its own.

It was the time to be on the 'Caf. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times; it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness; it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity; it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness; it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair; we had everything before us, we had nothing before us.

:(

Plus he has the skills to dribble in midfield and make himself space - something we dont really have right now

Pass and move - yes. He's reading of the game is very good and he defends smartly.

This might cheer you up

Exactly what we were missing on the day, no?

Thanks, ball retention is better than Carrick. Oops, sorry, supporters of Carrick. :D

Ekeke, you watch a lot of Spanish football, can u tell us if he is really slow?

That's a wee bit harsh on Carrick bbest. I'm not really on either side of the Carrick fence (not a fanboi and certainly don't hate him either) but he was nowhere near our worst performer on the night.

Tactics and having a midfield 2 was suicide, especially with the freedom Messi had. Put a solid 2 midfielders next to Carrick on the night & we could have done much better. But let's not get into that again.

On topic, I'd be pleased getting Banega. Good player currently with the potential to be great. Ekeke, you're a huge admirer and you watch alot of La Liga. Banega or Javi Martinez for us currently?

Oh thanks I hadn't realised that.. He would be immense for us.. I hope your right about it being one of those kind of signing's (where nobody knows we were even interested in until we sign him)

I felt at first that his one weakness was that he's not very mobile. But the more I watched him the more I realised he does have enough speed to get around, close people down and to go past people. He just doesnt always run at full pelt so it comes across that way. Most of the time he's in a good position to defend so he doesnt need to be running 100 mph to go and dive in. I guess he's like Carrick in this way

Banega by miles. Javi Martinez is a good player but he isnt a proper playmaker.

Martinez is like a more physical Carrick or Busquets. Whereas Banega is more like a Pirlo, or Xavi but with really solid defending skills and a bit of flair to do something unexpected and dangerous.

Banega could play many roles. He could play the Carrick role in a two or he could be the more offensive one linking up with attackers. He could play right or left of a diamond, he could play as the holding player in a 3 or as a ball retainer further forward. And Valencia have even played him behind the striker in the hole before, although I'm not a fan of that as he doesnt have the mobility to quickly drop in front of the defence or pull out onto the wing, receive the ball and head towards the goal. Like most players when he plays in the hole he finds himself with his back to the goal a lot so although he does a good job retaining the ball in that role, he isnt going to be threading through too many passes that hurt.

Martinez on the other hand doesnt have the same vision and offensive play to hurt teams with the ball on the floor in my opinion. So you'd want him holding as the deepest midfielder or as a solid option right or left of a diamond and offensively his game is to come up for set pieces where he can be a real threat with his height.

Honestly I doubt it. I just dont know of a good reason why we wouldnt be interested so I refuse to stop mentioning him

He's top of my list for a reason and the possibility of him coming deserves to be talked about due to the merits of his football and what would suit us in a player

For me, signing him would be so smart and pay off so much that I couldnt wait to come up against Barcelona again. He's the one type of player we are missing right now in my opinion

looks good but no single news about us interested in getting him...would be a decent addition to our midfield no doubt about that.

Looks to be a battler with great dribbling ability. How is his passing range?

Few are better.

Created the most goals for Valencia the season before last, in a team with Silva, Villa and Mata in it.

Great one and two touch passing, outstanding 40 yard passes with right and left foot and specialises in chipped balls over the top of the defence for a striker to run on to.

Passing is his best quality and no midfielder that we've been linked with is better at it

He has all the qualities we need added to our midfield, I can only imagine it's some sort of temprament/off-field issues that has led to our seeming lack of interest.

He certainly looks like a player that could do the type of things Scholes of late and Carrick on song does, which makes it rather hard to believe he is not linked with Scolesy's retirement and Carrick's instability, and with every other mediocre CM linked to us regardless of realism the last two years.

How is his physical game, would SAF expect him to buckle under against harrying midfields like Chelsea's or bullying like Stoke's?

feck my man! It's like watching a Latin Paul Scholes. (Paulie Scholega)

Can someone please call Gill! The holiday is over for him. Let's do some biz before we miss this gem.

He's somewhere near as strong as Anderson. If he's not as strong then theres little in it. He's stronger in the tackle but perhaps he's a bit lighter when he's on the ball and has been fouled.

In Spain at least he rarely goes down and loses the ball without having the foul given but yes perhaps in England he'd need to stand up stronger a bit more often against the more powerful midfields. But as I say, in Spain he usually wins the freekick and has shown very good balance and strength for still a young player so I'm sure he has what he needs for the premier league

Banega and Anderson in midfield would be special.

I'd love to see nothing more. I really do believe that Banega taking the deeper, holding role and taking care of retention and playmaking abilities thus allowing Anderson to get forward and be the one to support the attack, could be the vital ingrediant to seeing Anderson become the player he could be.

With players like Modric, Charlie Adam, whoever else we've been linked with... In a 2 man midfield they would need to be the ones getting forward and attacking in order to be playing at their best. Thats if they could even play in a 2 man midfield with Anderson.

Banega has the full midfield package, like a miles more talented Carrick. So he can let the ball do the work with his passing and creativity, but if a move breaks down you can count on him to close down, tackle and intercept as a good defensive player.

Modric is better at these things than I initially gave him credit for but still nowhere near as good, and I feel like a powerful midfielder like Yaya Toure could steamroll right through him and attack the defence. Banega has the strength and hard tackling to make sure something like that wouldnt happen.

Both. That would be Scholes and Hagreaves replaced with top quality. We'd be good enough to bash heads with Barca if that ever happened

Sorry for the late reply gents, had a footy match at 3pm.

That's what I don't understand, I rate both these players high in their respective roles & they'd probably suit us better than some we've been linked with, they're young and talented. Is there any other factors which might make it difficult to get either? How much would you think it will take to sign them? I know Martinez have recently extended his contract. £30m for the pair? Or is that way too low.

Probably 50 in today's market.

I would think we are more than sorted if we sign one Midfield player.. We already have a wealth of options in: Fletcher, Anderson, Carrick, Giggs & Cleverley.. If we need even Jones and Park are options.. So I am certain that 1 player would be more than enough.. What do you people think?
