The league phase draw for the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League takes place on Friday 30 August.

Under the new format, teams will play eight matches in the new league phase (former group stage). They will no longer play three opponents twice – home and away – but will instead face fixtures against eight different teams, playing half of those matches at home and half of them away. To determine the eight different opponents, the teams will initially be ranked in four seeding pots. Each team will then be drawn to play two opponents from each of these pots, playing one match against a team from each pot at home, and one away.

The top eight sides in the league will qualify automatically for the round of 16, while the teams finishing in 9th to 24th place will compete in a two-legged knock-out phase play-off to secure their path to the last 16 of the competition. Teams that finish 25th or lower will be eliminated, with no access to the UEFA Conference League.

In the knockout phase, the teams that finish between 9th and 16th will be seeded in the knockout phase play-off draw, meaning they will face a team placed 17th to 24th – with, in principle, the return leg at home. The eight clubs which prevail in the knockout phase play-offs will then progress to the round of 16, where they will each face one of the top-eight finishers, who will be seeded in the round of 16.

So we get two of Roma, Lazio, Rangers, Ajax, Porto, Frankfurt, and Slavia Prague during the league phase. Most of those would be fun matches (hopefully no Prague).

Some other good/notable teams in there: the big Turkish clubs, Olympiacos, Real Sociedad...

Should be fun! I'm looking forward to the draw.

Our last 6 European knockout eliminations. Let's avoid Spaniards after these group stage please

18 Sevilla
19 Barcelona
20 Sevilla
21 Villarreal
22 Atletico
23 Sevilla

Hopefully we are first out so I can skip the rest of the draw. One of the good things out the draw - you find out all your opponents instantly without having to wait til the end of the draw

The only team I don't want is a team from occupied Palestine.

Would love to get the bigger teams and actually feel like we are playing in a high level competition. That being said, I don't want to run the first XI into the ground either, so I hope the assistant managers talk sense into ETH with regards to that.

The pot 3 and 4 teams in this comp are WAY below us in talent level. I hope that means we have enough cushion in the league standings we can rotate heavily.

We will definitely get one Turkish club. Hopefully we avoid away ties to qarabag and Kyiv, and tel Aviv. Rest should be fine.

DRAW PROCEDURE

Based on Articles 16 and 17 of the UEFA Europa League regulations, the following draw procedure has been adopted by the UEFA Club Competitions Committee.

Match system

All league phase matches are played in accordance with the league system, whereby each club plays eight opponents in single-leg ties. Each club plays four home and four away matches.

Draw system and conditions

A draw, which may be conducted digitally, determines the pairings for the league phase. The 36 clubs are divided into four pots of nine clubs. The pots are composed according to the club coefficient rankings established at the beginning of the season (see Annex D).

The opponents of each team, as well as whether each match is played at home or away, are determined by means of a draw. Each team is drawn against two opponents from each of the four pots and plays one opponent from each pot at home, and the other away. In principle, teams from the same association cannot be drawn against each other and each team may play against a maximum of two opponents from any other one association, subject to Paragraph 16.03.

The UEFA administration may determine alternative conditions for the draw in accordance with the principles set by the Club Competitions Committee and may adapt any of the conditions of the draw to avoid deadlock situations and/or take into account any relevant constraints in light of decisions taken by the UEFA Executive Committee.

Draw system

The draw is executed partly manually, with balls physically drawn from a bowl, and partly digitally, through a designated automated software, as further explained in the procedure below. The whole draw process (digital and manual) is reviewed and checked by an appointed external auditor.

Draw procedure

Four bowls are prepared for the draw, one for each of the four draw pots. Each bowl comprises nine balls containing the names of the teams forming the pot.

Pot 1
A ball is physically drawn at random from the relevant bowl and is opened to display the name of the team drawn.

Once the name of the team is displayed, the automated software randomly draws eight opponents for this team, two from each pot (1, 2, 3 and 4), including, for each opponent, whether they are played at home or away. The order of allocation of opponents starts with pot 1 (two opponents), followed by the other pots in descending order. The software draws the possible valid opponents from all pots respecting the above-mentioned draw conditions and ensuring that a valid allocation is made guaranteeing the full draw and match schedule in line with the competition calendar can be completed for all teams. This allocation by the software is made within a predefined time limit.

Once a valid allocation has been drawn by the software, the opponents and which matches are played at home or away will be revealed.

The procedure is then repeated for all remaining teams of pot 1.

While proceeding with the draw, a number of opponents will have already been drawn and directly displayed, so reducing the number of opponents to be drawn for the subsequent teams.

Pot 2
As for pot 1, a ball is physically drawn at random from the relevant bowl and is opened to display the name of the team drawn.

The two opponents of pot 1 for this team have already been determined during the draw for pot 1 teams.

The software therefore draws, with the same procedure as described for pot 1, two opponents from each of the remaining pots (2, 3 and 4), including, for each opponent, whether they are played at home or away.

The procedure is then repeated for the remaining teams of pot 2.

Pot 3
The procedure is the same as for pot 1 and pot 2. Only opponents from pots 3 and 4 need to be drawn.

Pot 4
The procedure is the same as for the previous pots. Only opponents from pot 4 need to be drawn.

Draw explanation

A video explaining the procedure will be shown prior to the draw.

Calendar elaboration

In accordance with Paragraph 23.01 (b) of the competition regulations, the UEFA administration decides which matches are played on Wednesday (Matchday 1 only) and which on Thursday, as well as the kick-off times. Furthermore, as per Paragraph 17.02 of the above-mentioned regulations, a club, in principle, does not play more than two home or two away matches in a row, and each club plays one home match and one away match in the first two matchdays and the last two matchdays. If need be, however, the UEFA administration may derogate from these rules.

The calendar of all matches of the league phase will be available on Saturday 31 August.

Looking forward to the club of my country RFS getting United here in Latvia.
That would be something.

Great achievement by Latvia to get to Europa League phase after 15 year break.

It's a very winnable competition this season, specially with no eliminated CL clubs joining later. Might be our best shot at CL football.

Its on TNT Sport 1 and Discovery+

Cheers, forgot about rights holders, what with TNT actually being the channel that shows the games.

Didn't bother with CL draw yesterday, would SSN at least have live updates / talkng heads in the studio reacting to it as it happens?

The expanded champions league has taken out a few fun teams that would usually be Europa level.

Did anyone else manage to read to the end of this without losing the will to live? I got maybe two paragraphs in and still have no clue how this stupid competition works.

Spurs should be favorites, two tough away matches at Porto and Fenerbache for us.
