Europa League 2019/20

Should be a winnable group IF we don't just play the kids. I don't care either way,I want a respectable league finish plus a domestic cup if possible.

What’s the issue with their stadium ?

I assume everyone has forgotten about Zoran Tošić. That's who I instantly thought of when I saw Partizan in the group, and lo and behold, he's actually still in the team.

Given our scouts will now be forced to watch Partizan in preparation, we could maybe pick up 1-2 promising players. Don't they always have quite a few promising youngsters in their team?

Decent draw, shame about Astana, but otherwise pleased.

If it's not empty go for it!

I might, one of those Red Star fans also likes United and he is one of biggest Beckham fans. My whole street still hates Beckham because of him.

Don't know anything about Astana. But i'd look out for the below from the other two clubs. Boadu was unfortunate to get a bad injury last season otherwise he'd be a bit more of a known name.

FK Partizan Belgrade
LW - Filip Stevanovic - 16 years old
CB - Strahinja Pavlovic - 18 years old

AZ Alkmaar
CF - Myron Boadu - 18 years old
LB - Owen Wijndal - 19 years old
RW - Calvin Stengs - 20 years old

Astana vs Manchester United. That's the stuff dreams are made of

Matic's home coming against Partizan. Let him play and boss the midfield :p

Part of the roof collapsed during a mild storm a few weeks back. Bad construction. Luckily the stadium was empty at the time so nobody got hurt.

It might be ready by the time that tie comes around ?

Can we stuff him in a locker before we leave their stadium?
I wouldn't want to frustrate their fans. Considering how much they enjoying lighting fires in their stadium, they may burn the locker room.

Nice - cheers for the tip. Checked out Pavlovic, 194cm, looks decent with both feet, left-sided centre back. Could be tasty.

Just get a few members from here to answer some questions about Astana. I'm sure the funny ones like @SteveJ and @Mr Pigeon can whip something up.
Mr Pij is a lot more competent than me... concerning football, humour, and just about everything else.

Wijndal doesn't belong on that list IMO.
Stengs the biggest talent. Also Koopmeiners could become a good CDM.

AZ Alkmaar have started pretty well defensively this season though and he's played every minute. 7 clean sheets in 9 games. Not too shabby for Owen Wijndal.

If you include 21 year olds as a youngster then yeah, problem with him is they've dicked around with his position last season so it's a bit unclear what his best position is.

Any idea when the fixtures will be out?

Thanks. The Astana trip could be a killer.

Paul Pogba must be loving that he has to travel to Astana over Barcelona this football season.

This is a very winnable group for us, but I had genuinely hoped for more "local" teams with less travel and fancier infrastructure.

Tosic and Ljajic :nervous:

No English speaking forums for them so there won't be any Ask The Oppositions unless we have any Kazakhstani, Serbian or Dutch volunteers to go to their forums and do the translating. Don't think Astana even have a forum.
Kazakhs speak Russian I believe. I was in Kazakhstan last year on a 12 hour layover before my flight to Russia, and looking at the people there, I highly doubt they go on forums. They all look more like they drink vodka and want to fight all the time.

Astana kazakhstan league champs the last number of years. This summer knocked out of the champions league first qualifying round by Cluj 3-2 on AGG who they themselves have ended up in the Europa league.

Partizan Belgrade reached the Europa league by beating Ole's old side Molde 3-2 on AGG. They finished 3rd in the Serbian league a full 30 points behind Red Star.

AZ Alkmaar reached the Europa league by beating Antwerp 5-2 on AGG. (tie won in extra time v 9 men) finished 4th in the dutch league 31 points behind Ajax.

The good --- is United should stroll through that group
The bad --- is none of those ties will make us supporters overly interested (if only we got Celtic or Rangers)
The ugly --- the long trip to belgrade and the ridiculous trek to bloody kazakhstan. Will be no surprise if United drop PL points directly after those games.

Just not good enough for where we were at the time hence the reason Fergie pulled the plug

I am not sure about that. He had a decent career in Italy, scoring regularly with Fiorentina and Roma which included a brace against Inter. In my opinion he was better then Tosic

Belgrade is about a 2 hour flight, I wouldn't be classing that as long haul.

That's a huge disrespect to Matic, who is still here btw.

 Don't know how that happened! And I'm one of his actual supporters on here (though I confess he is declining rather rapidly). Anyhow, he's a great example of the no-nonsense professionalism I love. Vida had that too. Hard as feck and gets on with things.

"Still" isn't the right word.

He had a good spell at CSKA, was there for 6 or 7 years. Returned to Partizan after losing his pace; was far too good for them at his prime.
