He will wear the No.7. He will have just as much impact off the field as on it during these two years. Also he has a chance now to make BIG post-career money as part of the United brand.

The journalists/media who are saying the squad numbers can't be changed after the start of the season are correct. Cavani can't just surrender his no. 7, nor can Mejia surrender no. 77, nor can Pellistri surrender no. 28, unless numbers can be taken off players who are on loan - that's been done in the past, but the EPL rules make no mention of it currently.
So unless the EPL will give a dispensation for purely financial or sentimental reasons, CR will have one of the unused numbers such as 24 or 32. There aren't that many to pick from, as we're currently using 69 squad numbers.

We can register him as number 7 in the Champions League though. Would be weird for a player to have two different squad numbers, but it's happened before.

Cavani actually only one to wear number 7 and play well wearing it since Ronaldo, after all the failures of Valencia, Di Maria, Depay etc but now has to give it to Ronaldo
If the CR7 image brings loads of money, then it becomes a legit money decision.
We sold James because he's not even close to good enough and because we had a buyer.
And because it solves the 7 problem...he is the most marketable athlete on the planet, did you think we were gonna let him wear 37 or something?
