Erling Haaland

- The Champions League is clearly the most exciting tournament, and for me playing in the Champions League is very special. I expect that we qualify there every single year, says Haaland.

Quote from before the game. He isn’t sticking around if they miss out on CL.

What I really have found most surprising watching him this season is how explosive he is. For a tall guy he gets off the mark really well and the power!

I wasn’t that fussed about going for him because of Martial but feck me. Haaland looks absolutely the real deal.

Pretty much. To add to that, world class strikers aren't reliant on others spoon-feeding them service, they create chances for themselves through movement, anticipation, making runs etc.

Just spot the difference between the no. 9s in the following clips. One is on his arse 60m from goal but gets up and less than 10 seconds later he's almost there to score a "tap-in". And then he's cursing as hell that he didn't do more in that situation, even though it would be physically impossible to do anymore than what he actually did. And this is what he does for 90 minutes, always on his toes, waiting to capitalise on any sort of opportunity.

Having already scored twice in that half it would have been very easy for him to stay down and take a breather for a few seconds. But his mind is only fixated on one thing, goals. Any kind of half chance, sniff, rebound, he simply wants to be on the end of it.

The next clip shows a no. 9 with zero awareness or anticipation. He has no clue where he is in relation to the CBs. For about 2 seconds he is ball watching as the passage of play passes him by. And then he's half-heartedly jogging towards goal. No desire to get on the end of a potential shot, rebound, anything.

Just so oblivious to his surroundings.

People love throwing out the "oh we don't create enough" argument, that's completely nonsense. Bruno is one of the top creators in the world. Wan-Bissaka and Shaw have 6(!) assists between them in the last three games, that's probably more than they managed in the previous 1.5 years combined in the league. Why is that? Is it because they've learnt to cross overnight? No. It has coincided with an actual CF starting to get a consistent run of games. CBs know they have to be extra careful against Cavani. Not only is Cavani a threat from crosses but it has a knock on effect because if all eyes are on him then that leaves space for other attackers to score from the crosses.

A static lamp post like Martial would even make prime Beckham's crossing look bad.

Saw an interview with Ibrahima Konate yesterday. He said Lewandowki is the toughest striker he has played against. Obvious answer you'd think but his reasoning was interesting. It wasn't because of any physical attributes but because he's mentally switched on for 90 minutes. Whenever goal clips are posted in match/player threads on this forum people always go "he wouldn't get that kind of service here", "the defending in the PL isn't this bad" etc. They only see the goal clips and not the rest of the 90 minutes where these attackers are constantly tormenting the defenders and forcing lapses in concentration. That shows a real lack of appreciation for top class players.

Great post. You also touch on my frustration with people slagging our fullbacks - who are they meant to cross to half the time?

He might be, but we would miss out on someone who will become a goal scoring legend to the levels of at least the new Lewa. The boy is born to score goals
This! Mason strikes me as a player who likes to drift in from wide. Haaland is a natural CF and has the intelligence to play there. Watching him last night reminded me of a younger Cavani; speed, movement and unerring finishing. Look at his second goal. There was something about it that told you he was going to score in a way that Martial and Rashford always give you the impression that they ‘might’ rather than will.

I think in the right system that Mason can go on to be an excellent right sided forward. I mean his finishing is so lethal that you only need to find a consistent way to get him cutting in on his left foot to shoot. Haaland can probably just naturally help that by occupying the centre halves to the level he does. Great players create space for other great ones, just like Rooney did for Ronaldo. I don't see it as Haaland or Greenwood but that both can co-exist very effectively. Any chance to sign the guy has to be taken.

City, PSG, Bayern. They're the CL challengers and the money clubs, in my opinion.

Barca are fecked. Liverpool, I don't think FSG is the type to spend the money required for Haaland.

Liverpool broke the transfer record for a CB and a GK, they can do it for him.

Rather have faith in Mason him naturally seems like a better footballer than Haaland

This doesn't seem logical at all. Haaland's breaking records every week. He's at Mbappe's level, if not higher.

Purposely missing the point, aren't we?
I'd be very surprised if a 21-year-old Norwegian cared that strongly about the Leeds-Manchester United rivalry. Yeah, he was born there but they moved when he was three.

Yes I suppose. I just doubt we're the frontrunners in this race.
Oh I don't think we have any chance of getting him but not because of any connection to Leeds. I expect that either Bayern will activate his release clause next year or Real Madrid will sign him. Hard to see him in a Guardiola side but he might make an exception for him, with Agüero's neverending injuries. So they could be in the conversation as well.

I just have a sinking feeling that he'll end up at City and their dominance over us and the league for the past 10 years will carry on! Sigh...

No chance of that happening in my opinion. Why would he?
Dortmund will want to get rid of that clause or else up it, they could just say it to him you can still leave. He’s worth double the clause

Aftet how they acted over Sancho, why would Haaland trust them?

Do you think we stand a chance? Him with ties to Leeds, our apparent clumsy dealings with Dortmund last summer, Raiola etc.??

If we show the willingness then yes, we've got a decent chance. We tick most the boxes. Young talented squad, vacancy at CF. Exciting project. Money is a serious issue for lots of big clubs, not for us.

Raoila is a pain in the arse for most big clubs, and several of those clubs will have a worse relationship with him than we do. If anything we can use the Raiola situation to our advantage.

Leeds connection means nothing. His England connection clearly means something, he rates the PL highly and isn't naturally drawn towards for example Spain as a lot of players from southern parts of the world are.

Assuming he's not available this summer and we get Sancho (or Amad shows something special) for the RW. I hope we give Greenwood a chance as the no.9 next season. Haaland is clearly special but it would be a shame if Greenwood doesn't get a proper go as first choice no.9.

If he is available this summer and we can get him, it's too good an opportunity to not go for.

We have to sign him, whatever it takes or costs.

Send Martial back the other way if needs be, this guy is that good. Absolute goal machine.

We should really be trying to move heaven and earth to sign him if remotely possible.

I don't care if it means getting into bed with Raiola... Woody should get in the bloody shower with him if neccesary.

His first goal last night was just brilliant. Steamrolled his way to scoring

As highly as I rate our young strikers mbappe and Haaland performing like that set the bar for a striker leading the line in Europe

Agreed. If we can't get Haaland, we can't get Haaland. You don't need the absolute best talent/player in every position. Liverpool were the best team around or thereabouts for a few years with Firmino as CF. Would also like to see Greenwood developed as a number 9. He's fast enough but doesn't have that rapid acceleration the best wide forwards have. But his raw talent at putting the ball is better than many of the best strikers.

True, but he's at Dortmund and they're winning feck all, and Mbappe at PSG hasn't won the CL despite having an even better in Neymar alongside him.

So of course we want players like these but we can still be a top side regardless, if we do the right things.

To be fair he wasn't just born there. His father played for them (and City) and a few years he ago said his dream would be to win the PL with Leeds. Now obviously he's not going to play for Leeds (unless they do a Chelsea/City) and I don't think it'll impact whether he would join us or not, but there's a chance it does if all else is equal.

If there was no chance of him ever playing for us we'd never have got as close as we seemingly did before. People really need to stop going on about his dad's career thinking that'll impact things, it's baffling.

He's got a great relationship with Solskjaer, we stand more of a chance than people give us credit for.

Leeds United, his dad, Roy Keane - none of that is going to have any impact whatsoever.

A decade without any real success domestically or internationally, would be the issue for us if we went for him. The top clubs in Europe will be lining up next summer and we frankly don't dine at that table anymore.

The likes of Gerrard/Carragher were Everton fans before they joined Liverpool.

Ole preferred Liverpool himself. Being a boyhood fan led by your parents doesn't really have that much weight unless you are a true die hard fan.

I'm pretty sure his next club will be a PL-club. He has always said his dream is to play in the PL. His dad also seem to like the idea of PL: "He is built for the Premier League, but whether that will happen now or at a later stage, we don’t know."

United, City or Liverpool.

Roy Keane joining instagram in recent days makes me nervous for this deal. I've got this feeling he signed up solely so he could torment the Haalands through DMs and force them away from a move to United.

He’s not higher than Mbappe the eyes alone can show you that. They are also both very young. We compare him to RVP already. There’s is nothing I’ve seen about Mason which would indicate he can’t achieve that level of ability. I’d rather have Mason as a 9 and Sancho on the wings. Than Haaland as a 9 and Mason being a newer version of Rashford. This is in my view for the better of our club.

So we dont like Riaola and dont like dealing with him. If he convinces Pogna not to sign a new deal, is Riaola really gonna recommend to his new golden goose to sign for us? Of course not. Guardiola and Riaola dont like each other but there are city execs who can broker the deal.
Liverpool need to replace firmino whos output has been steadily declining. Chelsea need a point striker.

Thats 4 possible destinations in PL. Cant rule out Madrid/Juventus/Inter/Bayern/PSG.

The boy has alot of choices. I think he will sign for City if City cant get Martinez from Inter.
