I think things have changed a bit, mate. The financial gap between buying and selling clubs is huge, much more so than 15 years ago. A lot of deals involve a loan back option. This provides two things, a hedge for the buying club on the price of the player, even if the player continues to score / perform, the fee is locked in. Secondly, the selling club doesn’t need to sabotage its current season, and they have security of a fee, which protects them from injury and a loss of form.
When a club is buying an established star to avoid relegation or secure a CL spot, then there is desperation to bring someone in immediately. Of course, the fees will go up because the selling club realizes this, and it may also affect their league position.
I get that SAF would say the same thing every year — we won’t buy in January because there is no value. Yet, every January, we’d bring someone in. It was strategic for him. Vidic, Evra, Saha, Forlan, Smalling, Andy Cole, and Zaha were all winter window transfers.
I do think that Ole and the scouting / football operations department (such that it is) has a very specific type of player they are looking for, and specific targets. If those targets become available, then they will buy. He’s been pretty clear that the reason they did not buy a striker to replace Lukaku in the summer was that their target was not available.
