Erling Haaland | Dortmund player

Ho-lee shit, this guy is probably the Worlds most valuable player, once available for £18m

....then Ed cancelled.... GENIUS

Ed canceled because they demanded a ridiculous release clause which we didn't want to put-in. Dortmund did and are going to lose probably the best striker in the world for 40m.

He’s got City written all over him lads.

Don’t do it to yourselves, it’s the hope that kills.

Sancho should receive the brunt of our realistic muppetry.

Muppetry once embarked upon is simply Muppetry.
And save for the awful term coined by that forum group, (Muppetier? the absolute state)
Muppet attention for this coming refresh-a-second summer window, should be on Haaland.
Why? Well, why not?
United is big in Norway and we have Ole who has pound-for-pound a solid chance of convincing his student to join him.
But City looks equally enticing esp. with hsi Father's connection and Guardiola.

It will all end in tears...

it’s crazy to think in hindsight so many (myself included) weren’t fussed we didn’t get him because “we have martial”

it’s almost reached “we have Cleverley” (for not getting Sneijder in 2011) levels of ridiculousness.
Yes, I remember the mood in here last winter, pretty much based on his 30 minutes against Liverpool where he was just back, still half injured. We should never underestimate the fan-power, so the famous "not wanted by the whole club" quote may have reference to more than Woodward.

I never understand this mindset. BVB got the players for 18m with a release clause of 63m, his service and goals when he is with the club, and will make a profit of 45m if he decides it is time to leave. It looks like an extremely good business to me. Player can always run down the contract and leaves for free anyway.

I think it has been established for a while already, that was not it.

He joins you lot and the league will be foregone conclusion for a fair few years
Easy to say that, but we didn’t win the league every year with Aguero in his prime, and there’s not many gears beyond that. There’s always the chance to compete. KDB turns 29 this year, another big talent to replace.

That’s the difficulty of constantly challenging - as you’ll know! Interestingly if you start to look at the LFC squad ages, they really need to start transitioning in some key areas.

We’ve been very fortunate in our spine;
Kompany > Laporte & Dias
Yaya > KDB
Silva > Silva & Foden
Fernandinho > Rodri
Aguero > ?
KDB > ?

Outside of Haaland, who really is there right now? Mbappe feels out of reach - that’s why I think we’ll go all in for this one.

if BVB does not qualify for CL next season BVB may need to sell players due to covid and without CL revenue. They sit at 6th atm.

Definetly. And I'm pretty that both Sancho/Haaland(specially) wouldnt wan't to stay in Dortmund without CL play cause that man looks hungry for both the biggest records in front of him and titles not at least. In the post match interview today he said he watched Mbappe score hattrick yesterday and thanked him for the free motivation  Him and Mbappe are already the next big thing and I wont be suprised if it'll turn out to be the next Messi/Ronaldo rivalry in terms of goalscoring records. Have a feeling that Mbappe will end up in Madrid sooner or later and Haaland could probs end up in Bayern/City/United(hopefully!). Dortmund gotta do everything in their hand to qualify though and get him and Sancho to sign a HUGE new contract with a crazy buyout to make them both stay, but they'll both move on to bigger clubs sooner or later I assume.

Haaland is a far more gettable name than Mbappe, so it's far more exciting for fans to speculate. I really could see him everywhere, but if he really does model his career after Zlatan, then we just might see him everywhere. One thing is for sure, between his game today, and Mbappe's yesterday, they're coming for the crown and CR7 and Messi might have had the last of their reign.

I think it has been established for a while already, that was not it.

Any source / do you know why he didn't come here? Ole ended up talking to him trying to convince him to come here etc. so the interest was definitely there. AFAIK it wasn't his wages either.

If we lost the player because he wanted to play for Dortmund over us, then fair enough. If we lost him because we didn't want to put a release clause in that's fine as well.

What plays into other clubs hand is that German football, and Dortmund more than anyone, is the reliance on stadium income, which by now is zero, null, naught.

I'd be pretty annoyed if he used United as a stepping stone to go to RM / Barca. If his heart is in RM, then why bother trying to develop him here etc. Of course I don't think people realized he'd be this good when he signed for Dortmund - I thought it'd be more of a project despite his CL goals.

Exactly. And if they push each others like they did, who knows how many goals/titles they'll be at in 10-12 years. Injuries/club situation will of course matter, but assuming they both play in 2 of the biggest clubs in the world anything can happen. I'm just so happy we have such an insanely talented player coming up from Norway again  Solskjær and Carew was 2 great players for us, but this kid is on a whole nother level, and he isnt even near his prime age. Thats the scary part.

Assuming that’s true and the only reason we didn’t sign him it would still be an absolutely awful decision.

Get the player to the club ffs. If it works out well there’s every chance he’ll want to stay for a few years. Assuming we’re winning things then it’s a step down from United to almost every club on the planet.

And even if we do lose him for 40m in a couple of years time we’ve doubled our money and had a cracking striker on our books meanwhile, helping us win trophies and become a top CL club again. Which could make a massive difference to our ability to sign a top quality replacement.

Ed, Judge and the team said we pulled out cause of the clause.

Haaland's team said they chose Dortmund cause it was a better fit for that stage of his career development. They were also worried about the at the time insecurity of Ole, it's never great to join a new job that gets a new boss right after you join, you don't know where you stand. They felt Ole was pushing more for him than the club did.

Still better than not getting him at all. He might have wanted to renew his contract anyway if he was scoring goals for us which would actually put us in a proper title race.

to me stepping stone or not doesn't matter. I would just look at the cost and the level of the service the player can provide to the club. For comparison, just compare the overall cost and output for BVB to have Haaland for 1.5 years vs Man Utd to have Ighalo and Cavani for the same time period(Jan 2020 to June 2021).

When was the last time we managed to attract and get a foreign player who is that good and in reality costs that much and is wanted by pretty much everyone?

Were you annoyed when we signed Cristiano Ronaldo?

IMO not such a ridiculous release clause If we had signed him....

Worst case scenario (assuming he would still want to leave) we are forced to sell after 2 years, but without doubt we would still be in the CL and would probably have won some silverware during that time.

Best case scenario, he would want to stay at Utd and we would have the Worlds best striker on our books.

The release clause is 75 mE or 65 mP. A pretty decent amount and given that they managed to sign him for only 18 mP with that clause.

I'm not sure that analogy works in your favor though. Sneijder went downhill pretty fast after 2010.

I wouldn’t want him. He’d stunt Martials progress.
This is literally what people were saying in this thread.

Excatly. If, let's say, his release clause kicks in 3 years time, you have 3 years to build around him and convince him to sign another deal while the whole club is going up a level. You have him here on daily basis and your negotiation position is pretty much the best it can be. As opposed to go after him with the whole Europe along where the chances aren't great to put it mildly.

That said, I don't think anyone was expecting him being THIS good and if they knew it in the time of the decision the club would probably make a different one. Doesn't make it less wrong, just somewhat more understandable.

Edit: In the end probably mix of things and the player could have easily been more keen going to Dortmund as the next step in his career which is pretty logical and looks like a cracking choice so far.

I don't really know why there's so much talk over this release clause. Apparently, there's no such clause in his contract.

what if Raiola want to insert a 100M release clause in his next contract that can be activate in 2 years of time again? deal or no deal?

The source is his own and his father words. It was Haaland´s own decision to go to Dortmund, and he was never rejected by United. He saw Dortmund as the natural next step, matching his development (Molde->Salzburg->Dortmund->?) (just like Bellingham). In hindsight, it might sound strange that Haaland was worried not to get game time at United, but he was playing in Austria, remember, and Martial was on fire. Still, If Haaland had trusted that Ole would remain at United, that could have helped, but Ole´s job looked everything but safe January 2020 (there was even a story circulating that Haaland requested a guarantee from Woodward that Ole would stay in his job, but that of course, could be just bollocks). So according to Haaland himself, he went with this gut-feeling in the end, which could be a mix of many things. Would he be starting, did the club really want him (e.g. the fans, the board), what would happen if Ole got the sack, how would the next manager treat him. There is one thing many new appointed managers seem to be cautious about, and that´s players with too much affection to the former one - just look what happened to the Norwegian players Ole signed at Cardiff. These things counts.

If that’s true then our scouting department (and his former fecking manager) are as bad at spotting talent as Woody is at signing it!

That’s plausible and much less worrying/annoying than this release clauss nonsense.

Haaland is now 1 goal shy of Mbappes record of most CL goals before turning 21. Mbappe is topping the list with 19 goals. Haaland doesnt turn 21 before end of july though so he got time. The likes of Benzema had 12 goals before his 21th birthday, while none other than Messi himself, had 8. Looks promising.

Aye. Also most logical and likely scenario.
