Erik Ten Hag Press Conference (v Brighton) | 13:30 BST

This lot spent all of the past few seasons lamenting that Solskjær wouldn't talk about tactics and then spend an entire presser not asking the new manager anything football related other than discipline and transfers.

I remember how impressed us fans were when RR gave his first press conference. But we all know how that turned out. There’s always the novelty factor with new managers fronting the media for the first time
Exactly this.

Jose was all about verbally sparring with journalists. Ole gave nothing away, but did it with a smile on his face. Rangnick was pissed off with the club and aired our dirty laundry in public. Now EtH is giving nothing away again, but doing it with a scowl on his face.

What managers say in press conferences is about 0.01% of the job. I think a lot of fans put too much emphasis on it. And when a new coach comes in, they get excited about the difference from the last guy.

If things start going badly at some point, the same posters who are currently happy with EtH's speaking style will start having a go at him for the same thing.

Came across as no less authoritative than Van Gaal to me. Definitely less zany.

I think him being a bit more normal and less obsessed with the cult of personality aspect makes him sound more authoritative than Van Gaal honestly.

If Van Gaal was your boss you would be worried he was going to kick off at you because a pigeon shat on his car that morning. If Ten Hag was my boss I would just feel terrible if I messed something up because that is when you know he will have a go at you.

@Mr Pigeon ruined the vangle era

Klopp finished 8th in his first season with some dire football. Pep finished 4th despite spending something like 200m on an already fantastic City squad. So yeah it takes time to get your ideas across.
In those seasons there were clear signs of progress. You don't give time just out of hope that something drastically changes if they've shown nothing.

Pep in his first season finished 4th, but a simple look at the xG table says they were by a distance the best in the league that season and just underperformed. Klopp finished 8th, they were inconsistent, but they had an excellent record in big games after he took over, hammered City twice, made in to 2 Cup finals in 2/3rds of a season. And mainly - the football both of them implemented showed signs right away, it just took time and signings to cut out mistakes and reach the right level.

That's how it'll be with Ten Hag. But he won't get time if he has a Moyes type season, because he wouldnt have deserved it if that happens (it won't).

I always find it amusing watching a manager come into the the Premier League for the first time, there is always this look of shock about how shit the English press are in their first press conference.

Largely the same group of guys our fans follow around like puppies all summer waiting for their updates on transfers and views about the club.

When we actually see them without the safety net of a keyboard in front of them it's clear the level of people we're actually dealing with here

He actually gets the balance much better between being a grump versus ingratiating than any of our recent manager. Doesn’t take shit but also some light-hearted moments.

Whatever, the real test will be when he’s under pressure. Not before the first game of the season. That’s when we’ll get the measure of the man.

He's not great at press conferences. But that not why we hired him.

fairs but a lot deeper CVs as well.

Easy to blame journalists, but take a look at RedCafe. The most active threads are the Ronaldo and transfer threads, not discussions about tactics and setups.

Journos are asking about what people are most interested in.

He's great at them. He's exactly what you want, short sharp answers, don't give anything away. He's the exact opposite of Rangnick who said way to much at pressers. ETH will tell you what he wants to tell you, not what the press want him to say. They tried to get him to go off on Ronaldo, that was the headline they wanted, he didn't give them it.

100%

Yup that's fair and that's my expectation as well. We might get hammered 4-0 / 5-0 leeds style a couple of times because we can't press / build play out the back regularly but overall the stats (PPDA, xG, xA etc.) should show a marked improvement.

The same people who loved Ragnick's press conferences are loving these and pretending they didn't like the former. I find them all a bit irrelevant and will only judge him when a ball is kicked.

Comes across fairly well but a bit worried that he seems happy with the midfield options.

I doubt he is happy with them

I don't know why people expect managers not named Mourinho to come out and slag the squad to the media, literally no top manager does it, he's quite clearly wanting a central midfielder but doesn't want to slag off the current options he has or he'll lose the dressing room.

I don’t believe a word he said in that press conference, he is happy with the squad. What I find impossible is that two midfielders have left the club magic and pogba and still haven’t been replaced. I do not get what the hell we are doing. There is no way de jong is coming here. It’s an absolute joke this club is currently

Its obvious he wants more players. He’s always direct and strict in pressers. They should ask him tactical stuff, he loves that.

So you want him to do a Rangnick and hammer them before a ball even kicked?

What he is doing is what Klopp etc had to do at Liverpool, big them up until you can move them on, or improve.

Exactly. He wanted Nunez, Dumfries, Antony and de Jong. Lets see. I kinda feel sorry for him but he can sure squize the best out of a team.

what he says in pressers and what he thinks are 2 different things. He can't be that happy with his mid, he's spent the whole summer chasing FDJ. If he had of said, my midfield is crap, the press would have been all over that for days. Remember he's a match coming up, wouldn't do much for players confidence going into it, if their manager is saying that publicly about them. One of his aims when he took the job was for players not to go running to agents and press with their issues. He has to practice what he preaches.

End of last season, I didn't mind Rangnick hammering the players as they where diabolic, and the effort and behaviour was pathetic.

But Hag basically starting afresh and it's his job to perk them up, as he have no control of outgoing and incoming etc, and if he has to use them to the max then moaning at pressers, and running them down ain't the way to do it. His main goal is to the keep team positive and happy, and that is what he is doing.

A higher quality and edited version of the press conference (from Sky):

That stare at Jamie Jackson at 5:40  .

I'd say we replaced Pogba with Eriksen. Still need more though.

Great first presser from Heisenberg.
You're god damn right

He's not giving away anything. His pressers are boring but maybe that's for our best.

To the point. Not being baited in by them. Maintains eye contact and is assertive. Not tying himself in knots and stuck to the script.

Done. That was decent.
