Eric Dier | Poch: “He is an important player for us and the idea is not to sell him."

Do you want United to sign Eric Dier?

There are other examples, as I'm sure you very well know. The point being that - contrary to what the original posters said - United can't always sign who they want. It's puffed-up delusion to imagine otherwise.

I wouldn't call it delusion at all. Is it so difficult to comprehend the fact that the richest football club on the planet could sign whomever they want? That may sound arrogant, but it's perfectly logical all things considered.

No doubt there are exceptions, as there are to any rule, but generally speaking United could sign pretty much any player they wish if they flex their financial muscle enough.

Do genuinely doubt this fact?

There is no chance this is a reason to buy Dier. He is not home grown.
There's more to being an English player at the backbone of the team than just counting as homegrown.

I'm saying that there are plenty of players that United want but don't/can't get.

I'm also saying that I suspect Dier is reasonably content to be at Spurs and will not be wildly agitating for a move away to United.

Is Dier not a childhood United fan?

If there are exceptions then you can't sign whoever you want - simple as that. And there have been many exceptions.

It's a pretty screwed system that refuses to acknowledge Eric Dier as homegrown, but allows him represent England whenever picked . I know he came through the youth team at Sporting but still makes no sense.

Similar to Lukaku, counted as a homegrown English player yet plays his International football for Belgium. Not that I'm complaining about that however.

If we get Sanchez, Neymar and Dier we'll definitely finish top four and could even win the title this year.

Who would people prefer out of Dier or Matic hypothetically? Don't say Fabinho!

Would of been happy with either, think Matic is dead in the water with the lukaku deal though, Dier has upsides of being english and much younger though.

Very few exceptions. How many clubs could claim to beat Real Madrid to the signing of Pogba, or Chelsea in signing Lukaku?

Needless to say Levy will prove to be a major obstacle in the acquisition of Dier, but if Jose wants him strongly enough he'll get him.

He won't unless Pochettino sanctions it - that's the bottom line.

And you most likely only went for Lukaku because you couldn't get Kane.

I don't know what's stranger, Glaston saying the obvious of we can't get every player we want, on the...Eric Dier thread!

Or the talking down of United ...on a United forum, despite the fact that Tottenham can't out appeal at least 4 other teams in the league, despite being at their best position in decades.

Tough window for Tottenham. Who do you buy to improve the team? Will the team stagnate if they can't add anyone.

It does sound arrogant and its not true. Theres a stack load of super rich clubs, many who play in more attractive locales.

It's not strange at all, considering I was reply to a poster - in this thread - who said that you could sign any player you wanted.

Spurs have plenty of "appeal", but what don't have right now is plenty of spare money: most of ours is being (and has been) invested in the both our new stadium and our new training complex. It's been that way for several years past. But I prefer this building for the long-term rather than trying to compete in a current transfer market that has little value.

In any case, we already have an excellent first XI and only need to improve squad cover/competitions options.

Just stating fact, can't avoid how it comes across. United are officially the richest club in football and the first to surpass a £500 million turnover. The huge sponsorship deals with Chevrolet and Adidas clearly having the desired effect.

There really are very few players we couldn't afford to purchase. As you say the location is less than desirable, but the salary at the end of the week more than compensate's for that. Safe to assume Dier would take no issue with the location either.

Out of interest, who was the last player to turn us down due to the location?

Jamie Jackson was spot on in our Lukaku interest long before it was even a rumour. Reckon he's right about this one as well.

Is he really that good and worth £50m? I don't know

I didn't really keep an eye on him last season, I must admit, but from what I can remember of him, he was nothing special. Not particularly great at defending and not that effective going forward. It feels like a bit of a desperate buy, I could be wrong though.

"Desperation buy" to me implies a lack of time/options forcing you to buy someone. If the Dier links prove to be true then it strikes me more as a straightforward bad buy.

Dier ffs. Do not want, but of course Jose would like this boring overrated guy.

MEN claiming he is a United fan? Never heard that before.

Would mucb rsther have Dier than Matic that is for sure

He isn't a desperate buy at all, we've been after him for ages. Desperate buy is usually a signing during the last few days of the transfer window.

Squad player at best. Miles behind Pogba / Herrera. God knows why we would pay £50 million. There's bound to be a better CM available for that price - or can't we just buy a cheaper squadie?

That's the point. He will hold and protect the back four.

Football isn't about non stop glamorous signings.

Dier played very little at DM last season, Wanyama covered the role for the most part while Dier played at CB in a back three, but the season before last he was outstanding at DM, second only to Kante in my opinion.

He'd be a quality purchase.

The only good thing about signing him is that if we have our usual defensive injury crisis he could play in defence.
