Before we even get to the gulf in quality Dier's playing style is nothing like Carrick's. He is a bigger Owen Hargreaves if anything.
His distribution is no where near that of Carrick and he is nowhere near as good as Carrick. Also he is NOT being played out of position, he initially came to us as a CB.
Actually he was bought with the intention of moving him to midfield, he is a decent CB but a very good DM.
Andrea Pirlo went to Milan as a Trequartista, but found his niche as a Regista; the reality is Dier is clearly a better midfielder than he is a defender, and rose to prominence in that role as well as becoming a fixture in the England team in that position. Hes diplomatic in the press when interrogated on the subject, but I'm sure he'd rather be playing in the middle every week, and that's why he's potentially gettable for United.
He's perhaps not quite on Carrick's level in terms of intricacy of passing, but he isn't far off, and any inferiority in that sense is neutralised by his superior physical and defensive presence, something Mourinho values.
I don't know if that was the intention more good development. I think I read somewhere that Dier has been really influential in our switch to the back 3.
I'm glad your impressed with him but he really will never have the passing ability and vision that Carrick has, he also is nowhere near as comfortable on the ball as Carrick, he always looks like he has so much time. Don't get me wrong I love Dier and would want us to keep him but there are plenty of Spurs fans who don't rate him at all. The negatives against him are small but he can sometimes get caught napping and is prone to the odd error but he is still young. Poch is a huge supporter of Dier so I don't know how get table he may be, the figures of £40M seems unbelievable to me.

Don't see the comparison between him and Carrick at all. Carrick is more of a play maker, and Dier much more of a destroyer.
Think the comparison can be that they are both very good positional holding midfielders
Neither are runners who break up play like Kante, but rather cover dangerous areas. Both are quite tidy passers as well although Carrick is better.
Not the best comparison, but the best United player to compare him to IMO so I can understand why on a United forum.
With Pogba in our mid, we need a destroyer. Personally I'd prefer a mobile one, I guess Kante has ruined it for everyone, but Dier could do the job. His passing is tidy and in that role that's all we'd need from him. Kante certainly wouldn't have Carrick's passing either, but both would be much more aggressive in that role. I don't see this one happening, but that's the type of player we need to counteract Pogba
Watching Monaco yesterday again, and it'd be absolute madness to spend £40m on Dier when we could get Fabinho for a similar if not cheaper price. Fabinho is just better than Dier.
Fabinho is better technically, he can play midfielder and right back... When we know that we need both positions, it can be good to buy him.
Dier can be useful in terms of Mourinho's type of player, but I do think that we can get a very good midfield three in Ander (holding), Fabinho right and Pogba left.
I'd prefer Dier. Always liked Fergies philosophy in having an English/Brittish spine to a Utd team. Dier has a fine range of passing and is not quite the finished article yet, hence i think he'll improve a lot more over the next few years.

If we land Michael Keane I'd rather think Wimmer would leave rather than Dier. Spurs are obviously looking to strengthen the squad, not let an important player leave for no reason.
I just don't see it - even that article states that Poch values players who are versatile and who is more versatile than Dier in our squad? This all smells fishy and personally I think there is a bit of an agenda in the British press to try and push Dier out of Spurs because they want him playing in midfield for club and country. There are no quotes anywhere to suggest he is unhappy at Spurs or is unhappy playing in defense so I can only assume that it's nonsense.

He's a good player and I love him but if he left for big money it wouldn't really effect us much first team wise. Personally I don't think it will happen.

All depends what u expect from him, heard a lot of comparisons with Carrick. If that's what you hoping, yes you will be disappointed.
He's good, but not good enough to go through the hassle of dealing with Spurs imo.

I think a lot of the comments in here were equally levelled at Carrick when he came. I thought he was decent, but not that good and that the fee we paid was ridiculous.
I guess it's just not a glamour position, but when you consider what you want a DM to do, protect the back 4, break up attacks, set up attacks, then it is a massively important role for unsung heros.

Yeah, his best asset is that he's comfortable enough playing as a DM or a 3rd CB. I think the Carrick comparisons are off, though. At Spurs, Carrick stood out for his passing and Dier does not.
I could see us going for him in that we then might not feel pressure to sign a CB or a 2nd CM and a summer of say, Griezmann, Ibra replacement 9, a CM and Dier would give us solid depth everywhere except maybe LB.

depends on the cost, but I do get what you're saying about dealing with spurs - and also the ability to prize the player away from a team who's building a new stadium, got great young English players in the squad and London over Manchester...
But I still think he's a player we should be looking at to help release Pogba into a more attacking role as he is young enough, proven in the PL and someone I can see being a fantastic player for the next 6-8 years.
I definitely do believe that we want to get a very good DM to go with Pogba and Herrera.

Vertonghen and Alderweild are much better passers than Bailly, Smalling, Rojo and Jones, so you're better off dropping your DM deep and letting your CBs take on more of the playmaking.
I think we need a better overall midfielder, even if it means playing Herrera as the DM when we go 4-3-3, and Herrera and that signing can rotate/compete to be Pogba's partner when we go 4-2-3-1 in easier games to get another attacking mid on the field as a 10 like Mata or Mkhitaryan.
If there's a Vidal or Modric mobile passer type out there, hopefully we won't miss the boat again. Verrati is the obvious name but unlikely. Keita seems to have his fans, I haven't seen near enough of him to say.
He plays more in CB these days. Wanyama is the go to DM for them

Once again the only similarities between Carrick and Dier is Spurs.
The point is he's primarily played in a back 3 to accomodate Wanyama this season; he wants to play midfield, United can give him that as his default position, while Spurs can replace him in defence with Keane. Sounds very legit.
He'd be a quality addition to the team, very robust and Matic-esque in stature. His passing is underrated by those who don't watch him subjectively, a lot like Gareth Barry, a player who neutralised Yaya Toure's weaknesses at City, who Capello preferred to Carrick and who Benitez was willing to sacrifice Alonso for.
He naturally drops deep when in possession, which allows both fullbacks, generally Rose and Walker, to move forward simultaneously; his presence could be key to Luke Shaw's chances of establishing himself in that sense, as Jose might be more open to have both him and Valencia moving forward if they have midfield cover.
