So does Phil Jones have the same reputation then?

Subject your ramblings to a bit of logic my good man.
No, he’s not a favourite. There are some players you just can’t criticise on here. I got the answer to the question I asked when I first entered the thread anyway.

Why would any of our defenders ba a favourite for other players in the league? You replied to a poster who said other premier league players fear Bailly, by saying his absences have enhanced his reputation with these other players. So what does any of this have to do with being a favourite?

One problem with Bailly is that he represents minimal attacking threat at set pieces. Not saying that our other CBs score many goals, but still a really top CB has to possess some attacking prowess, I would have thought.

That said, it is still more important for a defender to defend well, and Eric had performed very well yesterday
True but he’s an unpredictable mad man. The type of guy to not score in 5 years then score a bicycle kick in the 94th minute of the last game of the season to win us the league.

Haven’t been his biggest fan due to his rush style but he was very good yesterday and covered at times for Maguire really well. Has a good pace on him too, good just to challenge Victor for the starting place if only he can stay fit for a while.

One striker saying they don’t like being kicked by Bailly is not evidence that he’s a really good defender. People didn’t want to take Deeney at his word that Fred is a liability so why take that seriously?

It is evidence that he is feared which was the point.

At this point your argument has evolved into three different iterations: A - That Bailly is respected because of his long absences; when confronted with a lack of respect for other similarly absent players you pivoted to B - That Bailly is respected because he is a fan favourite; and when confronted with the fact that opposing players have no reason to have favourites, you pivoted to C - that we should not listen to those who say they fear/respect Bailly anyway.

This suggests that you are simply resolute in not liking the player and will not accept any evidence of his being a good player.

The post you were replying provided zero evidence of Bailly being feared by strikers anyway.
I was giving it the benefit of doubt. Rio Ferdinand once said Kevin Davies was his toughest opponent. Almost like people don’t like being elbowed or kicked.

Vinnie Jones was feared. It didn’t make him a good player. Where is the evidence Bailly is so feared among his peers?

I will accept evidence in the form of regular good performances, not one decent performance against the 5th worst attack in the league. A game in which he was lucky to get away with gifting them the ball in our box, a few days after he forgot to mark the only striker in the penalty box.

4 clean sheets in 7 appearances. Pretty good for a defender that "can't defend"

I’d imagine watching Richarlison nearly get his head taken off might have made some opposition players apprehensive but that says nothing about Bailly’s quality.

The game yesterday was made for him. Not many attackers but many 1v1 he thrives on that. Was the best player in the pitch last night with Matic.

3 league games. 8 goals conceded. Nobody doubts he’s good enough to play against Luton or Brighton reserves.
His highest level is the best at our club, simple.

He makes no more errors than Maguire or Lindelof, yet when he plays well like he has recently, his pros far outweigh his cons.

His only issues are the big injuries he's had, but hopefully they are behind him.

Yep, and it allows us to play more aggressively. With Lindelof/Maguire we always have to worry about counter attacks, but having somebody whos 1v1 dominant is a huge help. It's exactly why Liverpool stepped up a gear once they got VVD.

Two brilliant games behind him without doing something wierd or wreckless.

If he keeps going in the same way I would nod mind him playing before Lindelof as a partner to Maguire. Quick, strong and ideal partner.

Rio is one of the best central defenders I’ve ever seen, a lettuce would have offered more of a threat at set pieces, so no, certainly being able to defend is the most essential part of being a centre half.

It may be, but we see it so rarely what’s the point? We’ve been here before. I would’ve thought people would learn after four years.

I think some of our fans are as up and down as Bailly. He has played three PL matches: one horrible, one ok but cost us, and one good.
We have 1 win, 1 draw and 1 loss with him as CB in PL.
Without him we have 8 wins, 2 draws, 2 losses. And then somehow he is suddenly our best defender?

As I wrote before. He is great in matches where the other team has weak attack and we need to keep possession. He is great at winning back the ball early but struggle when facing good forwards like Kane, Son and Vardy who easy find open space around him. His speedy recovery pace is good for him, but I haven’t really seen us concede many goals due to poor recover pace.

I am wondering if Ole will play him next match or Tuanzebe. Playing several games in a row could be taking a risk with Bailly considering his injury record. On the other hand, Ole does not seem to trust Tuanzebe.

Learned what?

Because he's had 2 bad knee injuries before that's it you write him off?

He might play the rest of the season, stay fit and be a star. He might get injured in the next match and we won't see him again - but it doesn't mean we shouldn't give him the chance to play while he's here and under contract.

Ledley King was the same and always played whenever possible. Until we get somebody who's clearly better and stays fit then we deal with what we have.

Learned that he’s sometimes good, sometimes awful and never fit so no point in getting your hopes that he’s the answer to our shit defence. He won’t be. His highs aren’t as good as his fans think and his lows are horrendous. Even in this run of supposedly great form he defended poorly on two goals. This great run boils down to him supposedly being man of the match against one of the worst attacks in the league. The Wolves team that started last night had a grand total of 6 goals between them all season.

Ledley King was consistently good on the rare occasions he was fit.

This not true at all. He is consistent when playing - the one player who was man of the match for many games when he had just come even when Zlatan had scored the winning goals.
He was bad 1 game ago against Leicester.

Just goes to show how a quick CB would transform our play. Just need someone whose not made of popadoms and not as reckless.
It was really interesting to see him try to cover for Maguire and his lack of pace, then switch to his own side. We definitely need upgrades in defence,

hahahahah you call that a bad game?! Vardy had literally 1 chance all match.

You are just going way over the top to try and bad mouth somebody. Ridiculous.

If Lindelof put in that performance his fanboys would be creaming themselves in his thread for 2 weeks over that.

Ledley King was incredible btw considering his injury and training regimen. Lad hardly got to train with the team and was still putting in top tier performances as he used his brain.

You know since his return I don’t think he’s been all that bad. Still does very unconventional things. The Bailly school of defending and all but his pace at the back has been a welcome comfort. Thought we were in for it last night when Traore hit the boosters on the break and had left Bissaka trailing. Ball gets played across but Bailly has read it and manages to cut it out.

Hopefully keeps it up and stays fit.

To be honest Lindelof would be slaughtered if he cost us the three points the same way Bailly cost us against Leicester.

He's the type of defender that performs well when he doesn't have much defending to do- if that makes any sense.

In other words, I prefer him beside Maguire against team that will try to counter us a few times, but I'd prefer Lindelof ahead of him in big games.

He had a decent game against Wolves, but Jesus some of the overrating here. He didn’t do anything of note to warrant such praise in my opinion. He was solid.

Think some on here are a bit desperate to champion anyone that isn’t Lindelöf or Maguire.

He’s cost us many goals and points in the past and rarely gets ridiculed in the same way so...

Two good games after the horrorshow vs Spurs. Not perfect, but good. Anticipates well, wins duels and dares to play between the lines. Fell off well on several occasions. In the nick of time, now with Lindelöf’s back troubles. Bailly at his normal level is quite a useful option.

He is the perfect foil for Maguire too, makes maguire look like a proper ball playing centre back.
I have no fear about Maguire’s lack of pace when you have Bailly accelerator next to him.

Agreed. You, I, and every United fans out there know that Maguire needs a pacey CB. I'm sure the management know this also.

with Bailly you never know what is going to happen. I am really worried about Villa. He has had two decent games and a Bailly cock up is bound to come soon. Lindelof is more reliable than him. Yes he makes mistakes but with Bailly you never know what he is going to do next. With Lindelof you could anticipate losing his aerial duel but with Bailly he could chest it down in the middle of a packed box. Rio thinks McTominay and Bailly was at fault for the Leicester equaliser.

It's a very long season. A big club like United should have at least 3 good and reliable centerbacks. I think Lindelof has his strength over others, which is passing and organizing. Yes, I think Lindelof is the best organizer in our defence.

To be honest Lindelof would be slaughtered if he cost us the three points the same way Bailly cost us against Leicester.
Someone explain to me how that is Baillys fault when McT is the closest to Barnes and can easily get to him but for some reason let’s him come across and take the shot. Worst bit of midfield defending I’ve seen in a while. Even Pogba would be ashamed by it.

I guess he also shouldn't have picked up Vardy in the box right

Vardy pulls off he and Bissaka. Simply a good bit of movement. Bailly hardly to blame for that either. He’s is doing what 99% of Cb’s would do Cover the front post run. Vardy is also on his blind side and should have Bissaka touch tight.

I've always liked Bailly. He was immense in his first few months here. When he stays on his feet more often he is a good defender. Injuries are the other main issue. Him and Maguire were solid yesterday.
