He looks world class already, can't wait to see him in the CL next year should we qualify. It's hard to see a weakness in his game he looks an absolute all rounder.

you can tell he relishes challenges and enjoys dishing out a bit of pain to to oppo attackers as if saying "this is my house". The vardy challenge against leicester the other day comes to mind and i'm pretty sure i saw him standing over a watford player that was asking for a foul after one of his tackles yesterday. I love him.

Caf bandwagon slaloming crazily downhill in out-of-control and frankly irresponsible manner. Lets just all love this majestic creature and his ferocious yet controlled centre-half displays quietly and in silence.

He was very good. He isn't the best in the league, but I would say in the top 5 cb's. He has a lot more to do before he can be mentioned in a conversation with Rio or Vidic.

If you take a little over half a season, then arguably Bailly already showed more than Vidic & Rio when they first played for us. To achieve their height though, arguably again that no active CBs on current form are on that level, so I don't think we're having that discussion here.

Vidic had a torrid start but the conversation isn't about who is having the better start. The suggestion is he could go on to those levels. Rio in my opinion is the premier leagues best ever cb and vidic was an absolute warrior. I'd start having the conversation when Bailly starts playing close to that level. I'd say maybe bonnuci or godin are in the conversation but that's even at a stretch.

Looking like a fantastic buy. Perhaps the best young defender in the EPL right now

Better than Stones. :D

He's awesome, my favourite CB by far. Total beast. But his passing, touch and driving with the ball out of defense have really surprised me since we got him. You can see a lot of La Liga influence on his play. He's the CB Guardiola should have bought.

Don't know how Jones isn't included in this conversation, as he's been our best defender this season over an extended period of time.
I've seen a couple of people say something along these lines, but I don't get it. During the period where he and Rojo were the established pair, I felt Rojo was comfortably the better and more dominant player. Jones was better in their first match together and in one other match in the middle of that run, but in all the other matches it was Rojo.

Personally I consider Jones to be, at this point in time, comfortably fourth choice behind the other three. Bailly because of Bailly. Smalling because if he gets back to his best (as he has been showing signs of doing) he is simply capable of reaching a higher level than Jones/Rojo can do. And Rojo partly because he was better when they were partnered together, and partly because he prefers the left which suits playing with either Bailly or Smalling better than what Jones does. In saying that it wouldn't surprise me if Rojo's form tapers off and Jones overtakes him, and then there is the possibility of Jones being first choice if Smalling starts to struggle again (which I don't think will happen, but it is a possibility).

He's been impressive. Very comfortable on the ball. I think Smalling seems more at ease with Bailly playing alongside.

I still think he needs to refine his tackling. The way he goes into tackles could lead to a serious injury.

Yeah that was brilliant, been a while since Ive seen a United player do that as far as I remember.

Understandable considering one of Smallings main weaknesses is being comfortable on the ball and bringing it forward effectively.

God no, calm down mate.

He's not far at all. I wouldn't say he's the best outright but he's in a very exclusive group of players if we're talking simply about performances over the season as opposed to names and reputations.

I would say only Van Dijk, Azpilicueta, Maguire and Alderweireld have performed at a similar level this season with regards to consistency and quality of performance.

You both make it sound like our league is littered with Bonuccis and Godins. Weird.

He really does clatter his opponent, especially in those 50-50 duels .
There aren't too many centre backs that are as quick off the mark as our Eric. That allows him to cover an immense amount of ground to win loose balls, make interceptions, and contest more duels than other centrebacks. The flipside is that when he goes flying into a 50-50, his momentum means he'll flatten his opponent whether he wins it or not (like you said). You'd think that makes his style of play reckless or rough, but overall he looks classy.
There's more margin for error when you play like he does, but I think his decision making is pretty good overall, with the occasional misjudgement.

He's just got to learn his limits, what he can get to and what he can't, and he'll be immense in the Premier League (he's not far off as it is).

I was responding to somebody asking if he was the best defender in the league. He isn't. That's all.

Behave

World class is too soon, but are there really that many CBs in the PL that are better?

Toby Alderweireld and Laurent Koscielny are easily the best in the league imo - a good bit ahead of anyone else. Luiz has done well this season as well as Virgil van Dijk to be fair and I rate Vertonghen very highly also. These are the most obvious candidates off the top of my head.

Standout CB in the league is Toby.
Luiz and Koscielny just behind.

He's been living off his form from a couple of years ago, he's good but really nothing special anymore. But Alderwireld and Luiz are both very good, van Dijk is also having a great season.

If people want to find the best CBs in the league looking at United, Spurs and Chelsea defence is a good start. Goals conceded they're miles ahead of everyone else.

Koscielny has taken a big step back this season. It's been very clear to anyone who watches him. That's why I said, if we're talking about genuine performances, let's discuss it, but if we're talking about history and reputation, let's not waste time.

Ok well forget Koscielny (who I still believe is a better defender than Bailly) - what about Alderweireld, Luiz, Van Dijk and Vertonghen?

This. I'd say Rojo has been our best defender this season then Bailly. Both would be among the top 5 in the league, on form. We've conceded a mere 9 goals in our last 16 games - that's very, very good.

I'd take Bailly right now over most of them. The only thing Bailly has against him is that he's not had chance to play a lot of games to prove it over a long period. But my gut feeling is that he's better than them.

Well fair enough, I think if you asked supporters of any other club than Utd you would get a different response. I understand club supporters prefer their own players of course.

Bailly is a fecking rock at the back for us. I've been impressed with his ability on the ball too. He'll be one of the best centre back in the world soon I have no doubts about that. He has it all.

I'm not sure, it's a real toss up between Jones, Rojo and Bailly for me, they've all been good when called upon. Bailly's the most exciting because of his age. But I really can't separate Jones/Rojo for us tbh.
