If Volendam had won yesterday (they nearly did), Ajax would've been in last place after today.

What the hell has happened to Ajax. Bottom of the league Utrecht about to beat them and jump above them in the relegation spots

FC Basel are going through a similar nightmare in the Swiss League sitting right at the bottom. Amazing to see the fall of great teams and rise of lesser ones over the last year or so.

They are similar but Ajax is a top 5 club in European standing and FC Basel has made the quarter final in European competition 3 times in their history.

No big club has has a start this bad since maybe Betis / Depotiva getting relegated but still none of the giant clubs in Europe have seriously been worried about relegation in 40 years.

I see the Jans effect is finally starting to show at Utrecht - beating the traditional top 3 now!

...but seriously, how come Steijn is still at Ajax? Do they feel he deserves a bit of time given the chaos of the past week? Or are they just waiting with firing him until they've found a replacement? Anyone have any idea?

I also wonder who they'd go for. Are there any suitable Dutch coaches around? Well, they did go for Steijn now, so I suppose we can cast that net a little wider than previously; but even so. Will they put Heitinga back in charge? Or finally decide that Reiziger was good enough after all? Otherwise, Potter is available! :D (Who I'd seriously back to go a good job at Ajax, but as an outsider to the club, he would definitely need to be given time - enough time to bring Ajax back up after relegation if need be! ;) )

Ajax doesnt have to worry about relegation. They are 3-2 up against RKC in a game that got suspended in the 85th minute. Ajax is bad but i expect them to get 3 points out of that game. Ajax also has one delayed match to play against Volendam. I expect them to win against Volendam since Volendam is shite.

My expectations go up when Ajax kicks out Steijn. He is garbage. As bad and clueless as he was, keeping Heitinga would have been a better option.

There's a lot of clubs bigger than Betis/Depor currently sitting in the Championship...and even in League 1.

Ajax aren't at that level anymore though. They've won none of their European honours this century and 3 of their 4 Europacup 1 wins over half a century ago.

There is zero chance Ajax will face relegation anyway.

Ajax simply got too comfortable and made some poor decisions both in appointing the right people and financially. It all went downhill fast after Mr Dickpic left

Even Steijn will turn this around if he gets more time to get the team going. I mean, at this point I doubt he'd get the team going in a way that fits Ajax's ambitious (and budget), but there is no way he's so bad he'd get this Ajax squad relegated over the course of a full season.

Seems like Ajax sold all their decent players and replaced them with shit ones.

Anyone watched the match? Heard Icelandic talent scored two goals!

Its ridiculous how far we have fallen in such a short time..

I would really like everything which is going wrong and which went wrong recently, but I just cant wrap my head where to start.. My only hope is that Steijn is still here, because we want our new coach the start áfter PSV next week after which the schedule turns a bit more do-able (as far as we can talk about something like that in our current state..)

By this time next week we might be bottom of the table, with Volendam playing Excelsior at home and us having to play PSV..

Poor Steijn!

Do you have any idea who are currently most likely to replace Steijn?

No clue.. Vd Gaag his name is mentioned, but for the rest there arent many options free.. Ffs we should have gone for Peter Bosz in January.. Even after he signed for PSV Ron Jans would have even been a much more logical choice than Steijn..

Maybe Pep will be bored after winning another treble this year and is ready to honor his great mentor Johan Cruyff bij reviving Ajax..

You got rid of, or more accurately you lost the likes of Ten Hag, Onana, Martinez, Timber, Antony, Kudus, Alvarez, Mazraoui, Gravenberch, Neres, Haller etc. over the last 12-18 months. That's the spine of some team right there! Who did you replace them with?

How can any club not be affected by a culling of that magnitude?

Ajax are thinking that they can get ETH back, aren't they?

The biggest loss is Tadic honestly. He was their captain and clearly the team's boss.

Was alerted to Ajax's demise in the Lyon thread. Obviously read about the fan riots and postponements of their games but genuinely had no idea they were so low in the table. I can remember them having a terrible season in the late 90s after Van Gaal and half the squad went to Barcelona but even then I think they finished 10th?

To be already 17 points behind even 4th place after just 9 games defies logic to me.

Of course selling key players every summer is part and parcel of what they've always done so interesting to see the ones left by. Brian Bobbery is highly rated on this forum, I assume the pressure of leading line for club like Ajax is far too much for Chuba Akpom and assuming to see Steven Bergwijn and Steven Berghuis actually in the same squad. They've both had odd careers. Bergwijn massively hyped when Spurs signed him but after scoring a couple of early goals he really did very little there. Berghuis signed for Watford in 2015, barely played but then had a very good spell at Feyenoord. Amazed he's amassed 45 caps for the Netherlands.

Will certainly watch PSV-Ajax next week, well the first 20 minutes before riots force another postponement....

Was watching our game today and he was conversing with Moyes on the touchline so he's been at West Ham since the summer as assistant coach.

I think if the situation gets that grave and they're in serious danger of relegation they'll probably have to stick Van Gaal in as caretaker for final few months just to tell a few home truths and get some emergency wins. You'd back someone with that manner to do that anyway.

Thats never been different mate... Also not to the extent you are currently referring too.. Thats the curse of every good Ajax team (same for PSV, Feyenoord AZ for that matter).. Success is and has always been leading to massive squad exhaustion..

So the fact that we are not top of the league or that PSV/Feyenoord are better is not the main reason for people wanting Steijn out, but we are now 17th ffs, football is only getting worse, everyone is playing below their level, because the squad may not be top level as it used to, but we should definitely be much nearer to Feyenoord and PSV as we currently are.. Plus the football looks like nothing, there is no attachking plan, our midfield is constanly wide open, our defence is leaking..

Watching this Ajax with the current horrible organization in the team you just have no clue anymore which players just áre really bad and which players only look really bad.. It's at least obvious there is currently no-one in the who is good enough (yet) to exempt themselves from this horror..

Yeah they will finish top half easily anyway. Relegation talk is crazy.
