Enzo Perez

Squad fodder, which is not what we need. Decent, but there are better players that we could definitely get, even if the big targets elude us.

Same don't want don't need. looks a decent player and I'd have him over Cleverley but not worth €30m at all.

Yeah, I don't really see him as a player that would improve us greatly and he'd be a very disappointing alternative to Vidal.

It's a load of shite, O Jogo were running the story today but only based on what the Daily Express said. He'll be off to Valencia if he leaves Benfica.

What makes him so special that despite the fee they are asking for and his age we are interested in him?

Could be all BS though.

He will go to Valência i think. Valência manager Nuno knows him well and is a fan. He's a very good midfielder but paying 30 million euros for someone his age is madness.

I think it is by far the most likely option that he'll go to Valencia, probably leaking some rumours of our interest to get a few more bob for him! I happen to quite like him though, thought he was one of Argentinas best players in the WC. I'd prefer a bit more of a longer term solution for us though.

Marca reporting that the deal is pretty much done. Perez goes to Valencia for €25m + €5m in objectives.

That would be great if true. Need a weakened Benfica for the second half of the season if we want to have any chance of closing the gap.

That would be absolutely crazy from Valencia.

Parejo, Gomes and Fuego are all just as good and Rodrigo or Feghouli are better on the right than Perez would be.

Nuno knows him well and i doubt he would put him as RW. When he played in that position he went back to Argentina on loan because he wasn't good enough there. Enzo Perez was top of Nuno's wish list, so this transfer doesn't surprise me (Benfica needs money as well).

Its a lot of money for Valencia in whats probably their strongest area of the pitch. Fuego is 30 now but thats no reason to need to spend £20 million on someone who isnt better than he is.

If anything they'd want a cheap backup, not an expensive player who doesn't improve them

Perhaps but it's just the case of a manager choice. Nuno wanted him since the start of the season and the deal just didn't go through because Benfica wanted full clause value and Lim was still facing problems in relation to his Valência takeover. It will be hard for Perez to break into the team. I mean not even Nuno expected André Gomes to perform so well. André Gomes didn't have much impact on the portuguese league and Perez won player of the year last year in Portugal (after Matic won the previous year). My problem is with the pricetag because of his age. Quality wise he is very good (and this comes from a Sporting fan and by Arruda's assessment who is a Porto fan). Sooner or later i think he will break into Valência midfield and become an important player. I'll be here to see how he evolves.

Yes its the pricetag that seems silly to me. If he was a cheap option for Valencia it would be perfect, but at that price I'm pretty sure he'd be their record signing by quite some distance... And yet wouldnt be the first midfielder on the teamsheet?

Maybe Lim's company buys him and loans him as with Rodrigo and Gomes? that makes more sense to Valencia

He would? Didn't knew that. Just started following Valência when Nuno was appointed manager. Perez pricetag is obviously inflated. The deal will only reach these numbers because of Lim's wealth, willingness to invest and the Jorge Mendes link. Although he is clearly Benfica's best player (also when Rodrigo and André Gomes were still there), i think the fair valuation would be between 10 to 15 million. I don't know if he will be the first midfielder on the teamsheet but he will be a very useful player for Valência.

I think it would be yeah. Valencia have been on a shoestring because of their debt, and Otamendi's transfer was the highest of recent times at 12 million euros. Before that it was Banega at around 19 million euros in 2008 right before Koeman tried to relegate them. I don't think they spent higher prior to that even when they were successful, just sold high like Claudio Lopez to Lazio for 35 million euros. Edit - Ah of course, Pablo Aimar was 24 million euros. That must be the record right now.

So if Valencia themselves bought Perez for 25 million euros+ it would be something new for them and you'd hope he'd be a star player from the start at that price

Valencia bought Joaquín and Aimar for €25m each IIRC back in those days. Joaquín was one of the best wingers in Europe and Aimar was a great talent.

Joaquín, wasn't it? €25M back in '06.

edit: adjusted for inflation that amounts to €29M in 2014 according to this. Aimar's €24M in 2001 then becomes €31M though.

Yes those are the kinds of prices that got Valencia in financial trouble. Joaquin the winger bought for 25 million euros and played like it was 2.5 million euros.

But again if Enzo Perez is 25+5 in bonuses he'll be the record. Inflation has nothing to do with the record. Its just a fixed number.

Apparently it's done. Benfica have communicated to the CMVM (Lisbon stock exchange) that they have accepted a 25 million euros bid (without addons) from Valência. Just personal details between the player and Valência left.

Both clubs announced it officially.

Don't know much about him but he was voted the best player in the Portuguese league last season. Seems like a box to box midfielder to me, a bit more on the defensive side i think.

Poor in his debut vs Madrid filling in for Fuego in CM, same against Celta Vigo, tonight he finds himself playing left midfield and at fault for a goal
