Manchester United boosted in the race to sign €30m Benfica midfielder

Manchester United have the upper hand in the race to sign highly rated Benfica midfielder Enzo Perez, according to reports from Portuguese newspaper O Jogo.

The Red Devils are waiting for Argentina’s call-ups before making a move for Perez. The reason for that is that it’d be very difficult for the player to obtain a work permit in the United Kingdom, given how few international matches he has played and a call-up for the World Cup would make it far easier.

United want to negotiate for a fee below the €30m of the player’s buyout clause but Benfica’s president has vowed not to let the player go for any less than that.

Valencia are thought to be in pole position to land the midfielder. The situation is now weird. It’s about how Valencia are in a hurry to wrap up the Perez deal, but it’s difficult for them because Peter Lim’s (the new owner of Valencia) deal with Bankia isn’t completed yet and without his money, Los Che can’t compete in the market.

As a non-UE player, Valencia want to sign him asap since if he gets a World Cup call it will allow Manchester United to go for him as he’d easily get a working license in the UK.

Is he any good?

Bigger question would be is source reliable? Particularly seeing as they've misspelled the EU and used the term "ASAP"

Think its because Soccer Lens has translated it using google from O Jojo

Wut ? Highly rated at 28 ? 5 international caps.. :nono:

He's been very good for Benfica for the past two seasons but no way is he worth €30m. He was also a winger a few years ago, recently converted to a central midfielder.

Feeks like a use Manchester United to increase the selling price, type story

I'm now sure that the papers have a transfer story template that they just fill in. Only thing they do is change the name, club and country. 30m seems to be the default number and it's rarely changed.

So no one knows what players LvG is signing so throw anything in there and hope something will stick..

I saw this on Sport Witness' twitter feed earlier but there wasn't an obvious thread on this guy at the time

Refers to the same O Jogo source. If I remember correctly, O Jogo was also one of the main Portuguese sources linking us with William Carvalho. Make of that what you will.

Could do with one of the in house Portuguese posters to confirm if this source is any good though.

Is any player worth less than €30m these days?

O Jogo are same source that claimed we signed Garay about 50 times...

Saw him a couple of times next to Matic at Benfica, looked about as good at the time but Matic has impressed me a lot more at Chelsea than those matches.

The usual linking us with a player in the portuguese league who happens to cost 30 million euros or more when in actuality £15 million would be questionable.

Other reports claiming he is going to join Valência. This really is silly season.

Are we going to end up signing him 15 times this summer like we did with Gaitan in 2012 and Garay in 2013?

Never really was impressed with him at Benfica when i sq then in UCL, EL, sort of transfer that does not make much of a sense, he is 28 already and is not exactly the best performer up there. Might be okay as squad player, but actually we god quite a lot of those already. If we sell at least 3 our players in central midfield, like say Clev, Fletch and Anderson, he could come in, but we still gonna need to buy someone with more profile in CM area. And 10 mil pound is more than enough for him really. Anything more, especially 25 mil pounds seems extremely unreasonable.

Everyone will say he's not good enough for Utd until someone else signs him at which point he'll become amazing.

He's an alright little player but I'd be surprised if we're in for him, does seem to be just to drive the price up if he's off to Valencia. Wouldn't mind him here but 30m euros is steep and Benfica won't sell for less than the clause I doubt. He's a good box to box player, used to be a winger predominantly but has slipped into the middle well. He'll get about all over the pitch & ain't afraid to get stuck in or anything & as he used to play out wide he's pretty good driving forward too, seems to be one of those players that fans of his team appreciate more and neutrals/opposition fans seem to think he's just another average player. I think we need 3 CM's ideally, something like him, Strootman & Fabregas would be a dream but I don't think there's a chance that'll happen & I don't think we'd be in for Perez unless we really didn't have any other options as although he has a bit of everything about him, he's by no means top level & Benfica will undoubtedly want a lot.

So Enzo Perez has been named in the Argentinian squad for the WC.......I guess that increases our chances of getting him if we're really after him which still seems very doubtful due to lack of a decent source......but he looks like a very good player and would be a huge lift to sign any top central midfielder at this point......he'd have fellow compatriots Demichelles and Aguerro to hang out with too in Manchester upon arrival

So, now Valencia are ahead of us in terms of signing players as well?

We really are becoming the laughing stock of the transfer market!

We can't sign him because he won't have a working permit that's why we are supposedly waiting for the Argentinians World Cup list.

That's why Sportwitness is shit.

Di Marzio's article doesn't even mention United but yet the author uses Woodward in the article to get more hits. Stupid site for stupid people.

Enlighten us KM, we're just a bunch of sheep.

Nobody said Sportwitness was the greatest site on earth, they are a better tribalfootball.com. And unless you speak 10 languages it is still useful.

Use google translate, Einstein.

I'm not sure why you took that attack on sportswitness to be so personal.
