English cricket thread

Maybe it's memory failing me but it's been the worst keeping I can recall for England.
I'm the opposite. I knew it wasn't good, but i don't think I realised it was that bad.

I thought it was 1 stumping and 2 or 3 catches. I've obv blocked some out

This kid seems special. 5 first Class hundreds at age 19. He keeps wickets as well

Is he any good at keeping though? Better than Bairstow at any rate? Got to say he looks very elegant with the bat.

I swear everyone keeps nowadays because of T20 cricket, looks like a huge talent.

Yeah Surrey has foakes & Jamie smith. Somerset have Banton & Rew. There is Ollie Robinson at Durham doing well. Buttler & Salt are there obviously. Bairstow probably worse keeper than most currently

As per Somerset fans he is pretty good but of course at 19 his keeping will probably need some work. Bairstow before this series wasn’t this bad tbh. He has come back very unfit from the injury

True but he was never that good to start with. I would say he was a very good fielder but an average keeper, whereas at the moment it seems he's a fairly poor keeper.

I was thinking the other day, if the Stokes era had started sooner, Buttler would be a fantastic option to have as a batter/keeper. I know he never really did it in red ball cricket, but there was so much potential there.

They’re not doing Bairstow any favours here. He’s unfit and struggling in both aspects of his game. Take him out of the firing line for a test. He looks heavy on his feet and immobile, which is understandable after a broken leg. If his form continues the knives will be our big time in the media. He’s little more than a meme now

Make that 6, equals Dan Lawrence's record of first-class centuries for a teenager and has the rest of the season to break it.

I'd say his keeping is okay but he's not ready for Test level yet. It's irrelevant anyway as he's not 'Bazball' enough to get into this side. Which is a relief for Somerset because they are starting to rely on him constantly digging the team out of trouble.

I thought similar. Huge weight of pressure on him.

That's how they should have been thinking

No changes to the squad. Can see Tongue/Anderson for Robinson being the only the change.

You'd think it would be an odd decision not to include Anderson at Old Trafford. Him in for Robinsons would be my only change, and keeping Moeen at 3.

It's a game of opinions but im slightly amazed anyone wants Moeen at 3? But I've heard it from a good few now - I just can't see it any reason for it coming off?

I would suggest the reasoning is that it allows Brook and Stokes to bat further down. Brooks looked average at 3 last test.

Mo hasn't really done much with the bat in tests for a while so if he can eat up the new ball even for a bit then that's a bonus?

I'd just bat Root at 3 personally but I am not sure they will

I don’t think that’s correct in terms of Bazball enough. I think unless you are a complete blocker like Sibley you will get a chance in this team.

I think at this point they are basically being stubborn about the Bairstow thing. You can’t make a logical argument for Bairstow still keeping

Yeah, I reckon they feel they need to see off the pressure or they'll be married to Foakes. If it was possible for them to get Buttler or someone in they'd probably be much more keen but they don't want to lose an argument that results in them having a specialist keeper.

Not surprised it’s unchanged but completely agree I’m not sure it’s in Bairstow’s best interests

In an ideal world you'd have one of Root or Stokes step up to the position, especially with Stokes not bowling so much.

That said, the role is such a poisoned chalice right now, it's effectively picking who you miss the least by having at 3. Moeen is the most likely to have the same innings at 3 as he would at 6/7.

If he can swing like a fool for a few overs and help see off the new ball for more in-form batters, then job done imo.

Brook also bailed Bairstow out of another error by taking a worldie catch that was clearly Bairstow's.

I honestly don't know what Jonny was thinking there, but Brook had to take the catch at full stretch going backwards and wearing a lid. It was a simple catch if Jonny took it.

5. Brook
6. Stokes (cpt)
7. Bairstow (wkt)

10. Broad
11. Anderson

That's what I think we'll see for Old Trafford in terms of team selection and batting order. I don't really want Moeen batting at three, but I think he's the only one who is willing to bat there.

Broad will start his fourth test in a row because he's been our best bowler.

Again, I think Tongue will be slightly unfortunate to miss out.

as saviours of test cricket, we’re just making a series of it.

and let commoners watch it!?

It's a horrifying thought. Making this great game available for the average plebs who can't even pay their gas bills makes a complete mockery of everything cricket once stood for. The gentlemen of MCC must be fuming and rightly so.

I think his confidence is shot to pieces and he's not thinking straight. The numerous drops, the missed stumpings, the dismissal at Lords and even the poor form with the bat generally must be leaving him a bit scrambled.

Like you say, that absolutely had to be his catch but Bairstow doesn't trust himself to complete even the most routine of catches at the minute.. Which is a ridiculous situation for your WK to be in. He looks slow and heavy too.

I think it's a poor decision not to bring Foakes back.

I bet these roughians will be watching on Flat Screen TV's as well.

still, he thought it was a great idea to tire himself out by carrying a protestor off the field. What an absolute hero
