English cricket thread

How Stokes and Buttler are going about their business today vs. how they went about their business a few weeks ago is telling.

"Because he was hit in the neck and not in the helmet or in the head maybe that had a bit of an impact, it was like getting a soft tissue injury," Langer said. "He got hit on the arm as well and then hit on the neck. But as soon as he got up in the medical room, it was like 'nah I'm going okay', then he had the concussion testing and the doctor came through and said 'he's passed all that and he's pretty good'. By the time he walked back in the dressing room he just couldn't wait to get back out there again.

"I was saying 'mate are you sure you're okay', these are like my sons right, so you're never going to put them in harm's way, even though you're always in harm's way with Test cricket. But he's going 'mate, I've got to get out there, I can't get on the honour board unless I'm out batting'. That's what he says, that's what he thinks. He was determined. All he was worried about was that he wasn't going to be able to play his forward defence because it was hurting with his top hand grip.

Set up for an absolute belter of a day tomorrow if the weather holds.

Best scenario for England is that they get bowled out just before lunch with a lead of 200. Reckon they win the game from there.

Exactly. It is comical how some people can make such a fuss about nothing.
These are professional sportsmen.
This is precisely why it is called a Test Match. Because it is a test of a players skills and capabilities.
And this includes mental toughness.
You’re oblivious aren’t you? Just an exceptionally dim human. A bloke literally fkn died from being hit in precisely the same spot, have some respect and sensitivity. Your comment was disrespectful but now you’ve bitten back at anyone calling you out on it. You’re a real tough guy aren’t you.

I may be getting him confused with someone else but wasnt it Langer who got hit on the head by Ntini and Ponting said he would have declared 9 down in the second innings if they hadnt got the winning runs because he wanted to go back out there and it turned out he had a fractured skull?

Only chance England have of winning this is if they get bowled out quickly.

Well not too quickly, they need to bat out the first session at the very least. Bat out the first session, have an hour smacking the Australian bowlers around, have a 50 over tilt with Australia chasing 250 ish (which is possibly a bit risky even for my liking considering the state of the series).

Fecking rain again. What a shite summer England has had. As an expat it makes me delighted with my choice :)

Bit pathetic that Lord's crowd booed Steve Smith when he was coming out back after getting injured.

Sounded like very few people to me. But, yeah, I don't generally care about the booing but in those circumstances it wasn't exactly tasteful.

It sounded way more than a very few people to me. I don't have a problem with booing either but at that moment it was particularly distasteful as you rightly said.

Apparently we're starting at ten past twelve. Lunch at half one.

No more rain and we could still have a decent contest. If we lost any more I think the chance of an England win disappears.

Looks nailed on for a draw for me. Don't think England would be brave enough to declare early and have a chance at taking Aus out.

Smith ruled out with concussion it looks like.

Yesterday's events look stupid on Australia's part now.

First concussion substitution. Also how on earth was Smith allowed back on field yesterday? What nonsense.

Crazy - I was legit happy when he got out with Archer warming up and the new ball in their hand.

From the release:
"Cricket Australia statistics show that 30 per cent of concussions in Australian cricket are delayed. It is not uncommon for players to pass their tests and feel well on the day of an injury and then display symptoms 24 - 48 hours later.

Someone deserves firing.

You'd think if they follow their concussion protocol properly it's almost impossible he plays the next test too.

I’ve had concussions where I’ve been absolutely fine for 2 or 3 hours then suddenly been incapable of holding a pen

The press release seems to indicate as much.

"In terms of Steve's availability for the third Test, this will be considered over the coming days but the short turnaround to the next Test is not in his favour. Steve's fitness will be assessed on an ongoing basis.

Said this yesterday, was absolutely ridiculous. doesn't matter what Smith wanted, they gambled with his career maybe his life even. And it looks worse when you see how he got out, clearly he wasn't ok.

How does this new guy qualify as a 'like for like' replacement for Smith?! They need to either change the wording or dig up Bradman.

He bowls a bit of leg spin - so that's there..

Such a drama queen.

These were the sorts of questions asked Smith on the field yesterday as part of the 'concussion test'. It's part of the protocol now.

“I am going to ask you a few questions, please listen carefully and give your best effort.”

would have been Modified for cricket (1 point for each correct answer)

What venue are we at today?
Which half is it now?
Who scored last in this match?
What team did you play last week / game?
Did your team win the last game?

I hadn't heard about concussion subs. It sounds a pretty sensible rule.
Smith will now also miss the next game as those diagnosed with concussion have to take a 7 or 10 day recovery period.

Very important for England not to lose today and capitalise on a Smith-less Australia next week.

Didn’t know that... good for them to be taking these things seriously & ensuring players don’t rush back.

Massive opportunity for England.

Hold on, is this woman commentating saying back of a length, rather than short of a length? :wenger:
What are you confused about here?

I don't think this is confirmed, is it? I mean, obviously he absolutely shouldn't play but last I've heard Australia are still claiming they haven't yet ruled him out.

70 runs in next ten overs and declare or is that too risky?
