English cricket thread

I can’t wait for some actual cricket again. Heckling from the crowd happens at every ground, especially in Australia, i can’t understand why it’s such a big talking point.
Because the MCC are hypocritical twats.

They tut tut at the barmy army and normal fans and act like they are better.

Atmosphere will be electric for the next 3 tests, Smith 100th test and hopefully he will put on a show.

Cummins in 2019:

"I wouldn't want to win a game like that," Australian quick Cummins said in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.

"It didn't really sit well with me ... it was a pretty bad look.

"If a batsman is trying to steal a run you can kind of understand but I didn't think Jos was doing anything untoward.

"You could probably almost argue when he was going to release the ball, he would have been in his crease."

The rumoured team is confirmed. I'm not a fan of Brooks at 3 or Woakes coming in form nowhere - but we shall see. Slightly more balanced bowling attack but the batting is full of pretty 30/40s potentially.

They’re positive changes for England. Greater variety in their bowling attack, and some decent pace with Wood. Although I would have dropped Robinson and kept Tongue.

I understand that argument and don’t get me wrong, I don’t care for Lords or that side of the game. It doesn’t really have anything to do with whether Australia were playing within the spirit of the game.

Horses for courses: Headingley is for swing bowlers. I know Jimmy looked out of sorts in the first two tests, but I would probably back him to come good here.

But based on the last test, why would you drop Josh Tongue who got Smith and Warner with pacy inswingers? I realize Tongue is a bit injury-prone, but winning the 3rd test is an end in itself.

I'm not saying that Broad, Robinson, and Wood can't be effective at Headingley, but Tongue was getting the most swing at Lords and Anderson is a proven master of swing bowling. One of them should be there.

Yeah shame we didn't get to see him & Wood

On performance I would have kept Tongue over Robinson as well, but as a poster pointed out yesterday it could be due to injury management. If that’s the case I don’t mind that, he looks talented and we don’t want to bust him like Archer.

Am I the only one who thought Tongue just looked OK?

It wasn’t exceptional, but it was decent and more threatening than Robinson or Anderson. Plus it was only his second ever Test and the biggest occasion, so I thought he did well in that context.

I don’t think we’re too far away. I think the Aussies have played to quite high in their potential, and we’re still searching for that game where we don’t miss any chances and batters get hundreds instead of fifties and bowlers are consistent the whole game. We haven’t really put together a solid game yet, there’s been a lot of mistakes from all parties, and I think if we can string together some serious performances, there’s a good chance that it will be two-all going into the Oval. We won three in a row in Pakistan, we won three in a row last year against New Zealand. It’s not like the team’s not done it before. And there’s a lot of confidence in the dressing room that we can do that again.

I thought Tongue did pretty well overall, but he was a bit loose. Initially I thought that Robinson should be included for Headingley, but it is likely to be a slow pitch again so I thought Tongue's extra yard would help, plus he proved he can generate swing at pace. Robinson being consistently below 80 mph was concerning.

I am not sure if Josh had a few chances go down off his bowling as well. Plus, he got Warner and Smith in both innings. Having a bowler who can get rid of Steve Smith is crucial (I think he also got him in a tour match).

I notice you seem quite keen on England talking themselves up. It's the Ashes, did you expect Robinson to write a column saying 'to be fair, the Aussies are better than us and it's just great to be here'?

Unless there's a massive change in the weather - I think it's unlikely we'll even see a result at this 3rd test ... raining for most of Saturday/Sunday and Monday.

So basically they've retained.

We’ll definitely lose chunks of play, but I wouldn’t be so sure. BBC suggests thunderstorms on Saturday, which can often pass without any rain and Sunday the rain is due to start at 5pm. Met office pretty similar.

If the pitch is flat and there’s no swing, we’re in trouble.

No - obviously there's a middle ground and it's odd that you don't see it. Do you see any Australians saying "We have a great chance of 5-0"? Or even "A great chance of 3-0"?

Last test, someone in your team said "We expect to win by 150", and now Robinson "We think there's a good chance 2-2 going into the 5th test". Robinson and Crawley sound like a douchebag with their predictions -- they can just as easily write "We'll be working hard to square the series" or something to that effect which is how every other team talks.

Yeah, Why even make any big series predictions. Standard answer of we just want to win the next game would suffice.

Just read this column after the first test:

Of course it sounds weird because they won it, but I think if they’re honest, Australia will look at themselves and realise they need to change their approach to keep up with how we’re going to play.

It reads like it was written for The Onion

Competitive target for the women. Did well to pull it back after a collapse.

They should win this, shouldn't they? I can't imagine they'll have many better chances than defending 186.

Australia had a fast start in the power play, but they’ll do well to chase it down from here with four wickets gone.

That was a bemusing review from the TV umpire. They're saying "the spike was after ball passed the bat", ignoring that you're looking at discrete frames!

Yeah it was a weird one. It did look like there was a gap between bat and ball though.

Ellyse Perry is surely the GOAT? Phenomenal cricketer and an awesome footballer too.

Ok fair enough, but also - who cares? I don't mean that flippantly but it's just noise?

Aussies supposedly playing Boland and Marsh ahead of Hazlewood and Green

They aren't real. Was some spoof account, mad that needs pointing out ffs.

Yes and no. Given the membership. Mildly hilarious either way. Especially as the right wing/idiot end of the Australia print press (The Australian and The Daily Telegraph) happily reported it as fact.
