English cricket thread

Sounded like a nick but does not matter.

Warner looks woefully out of touch.

Back in pavilion! Yeah, several false shots in a very brief innings.

England fortunate not to suffer for that mishap.

Stating the obvious, but getting Smith in tonight would be helpful.

Threat of Archer seems like it’s been a massive stroke of motivation for Broad.

Really upping his game now there is decent competition for places.

Can just feel Archer's going to send Bancroft back.

Edit -- not making him play enough..

Think he is relying on ‘off the pitch’ movement too much.

So pitching outside off stump too much, and when ball doesn’t move, it’s an easy leave for Bancroft.

Can’t wait to see him move in air and off pitch in same delivery. Also bowling down the hill at Pavilion end.

Probably not a good enough end to the day from England’s point of view. Will have to take a few wickets quickly in the morning or it could get ugly. I don’t really understand why they can’t start at 10.30 if a whole days play has been washed out.

In part because if they had done so today the match would probably have been decided purely on the toss as either team would have struggled to bat through the first session.

Looks like good bowling conditions tomorrow so let's see if England can pick up some more wickets. We're by no means out of this.

In T20 news my Worcester boys just beat Durham after Durham were 80-1 needing just 38 runs off 48 balls

From the scorecard it appears they just forgot to score runs. They weren't even close to getting bowled out.

As a result of moving around I now support Worcs, Lancs and Sussex. It's getting very hard to keep up.

Yeah that’s true. The thought of our top order having to deal with that

They still had 6 wickets left at the start of the 18th over and 4 left after 20, as good as we bowled to restrict them you think they could have pushed harder. Not that I’m complaining.

I'm someone who loves test cricket and the English cricket summer, despite being Indian, is one of the best things every year in sport for me. Anderson is such a big part of it, though, and I was thinking it'll be down a notch after he's gone. Hopefully, Archer can fill some of the void. Was v surprised yesterday to find out that Woakes is 30.

I’ve noticed that in cricket players often tend to be older than you think they are. With the exception of the absolute top top players that are around from their early years, if you look up the age of a player they always seem to be old. Might be one for the “Weird feelings of cricket” thread.

Hazelwood is just class. He is the perfect bowler for these British conditions too.

Having thought about it, that sounds very true..

Cricket players generally mature later than other sports. Especially bowlers. Shane Warne circa 2005-2007 was his absolute peak. I think he took something like 150+ wickets during that period which was the most productive of his career.

Similarly Steven Waugh peaked at age 28 to 36.

Lancs and Sussex look the best sides int he competition

Sussex’s bowling attack is great and Lancs look strong throughout with plenty of bowling options and one of the best fielding sides

Make a good final that

Can’t rule out Middlesex with De Villiers and Morgan as well

Think its partly due to the average ages of peaking for cricketers. How many proper world class players have their been around the ages of 21-25? Smith and Kohli, for instance, have found most of their sucess over the last few years. Jimmy, too, hes became a phenomenal bowler after the ages of 26/27.
I think they peak a little later and the can maintain that peak for longer periods.

It's amazing for Australia that they have all these top bowlers. They could arguably field the best and the second-best bowling attack in test cricket.

Are English bowlers routinely coached out of bowling at the fecking stumps.
Annoying isn't it. They've clearly been learning from Broad and Anderson.

We need to take Archer off here.

EDIT: Good move. Switch Broad round and get Woakes on.

These two averaging 113 between them. Let's see if they can do it on a bitter and rainy day in Stoke London.

Smith is too good and this is unfair. He's already on 1 for feck sake.

Does Smith think he's jousting or something? Keeps whirling his bat around like it's a feckin' sword.
