English cricket thread

I don’t think anyone is talking in definites, but the pitch looks dry and flat. We’ve had a heatwave for a month with maybe one day of rain, at least where I am in the country. The conditions for the first two days look very hot and dry, with no cloud cover or moisture in the air.

Added to that, three of the bowlers had very recent injury concerns and all bowl a similar pace, two of them in their mid/late thirties, which is almost unheard of with quick bowlers at this level, with their best performances coming in conditions that are good for movement.

Obviously it’s guess work, but surely you can see why there’s concerns?

Have you inspected the pitch? Have you had Anderson’s & Robinson’s fitness tested? What’s Anderson’s & Broad’s recent records like in England? The weather forecast for Birmingham is warm & humid conditions the coming days btw.

For me Australia are favorites btw, but I can’t understand why anybody would doubt Anderson & Broad with the duke’s ball in England.

I'd have gone Wood over Broad but it's certainly not a selection howler so I can see why they've gone that way.

We could really do with winning the toss and batting though.

People are just discussing their opinions on these things, which are as valid as yours. Why would I need to have inspected the pitch or seen fitness tests to have some opinions on it

One person said they struggle to see them taking 20 wickets and another said IF the pitch is flat or they have any fitness problems, it’ll be a problem. It’s not massively controversial.

It's an attack that will look spectacularly stupid if it goes wrong (it may not go wrong, they are indeed rather good bowlers). People listing the fitness concerns in their objections when their preferred inclusion is Mark Wood is a bit funny though.

No one is doubting Anderson & Broad as test bowlers but surely the idea to maximise the chances of winning should be around picking a balanced attack covering all bases. I don’t think that having 3 guys who bowl at similar pace & rely a lot on movement is the way to go if the pitch might be flat. As for us guessing about the pitches well I am just going by what Stokes has asked for plus what we saw in pictures.

Stokes went with Broad as he has a good record against Warner. Not sure I would’ve done the same though.

Are we starting an Ashes thread?

Excited for it to kick off... Will I still be excited when we win the toss and are 5 wickets down by lunch? Who knows...

Looking forward to Bazball vs the Aussie pace attack. Should be an exciting series.

Remember staying up for the ashes in Australia years back and Harmison bowled the first ball of the series to second slip. The greatest tone setter for a series performance ever.

Pretty pumped for this, England definitely not favourites though.

I can't be the only one who thinks England will comfortably win this series?

As much as I’d love it I’m not sure I can see it, maybe it’s just ghosts of the past with England and I know we’ve beaten everyone we’ve played recently but Australia feel a level above to be honest. Who knows.

Our lack of consistent spinner and Stokes injury has me worried for our bowlers long term. Never know with this team though, could vibe our way to win

first ball and session is key. there’s not much between the sides. it’ll be won and lost in the mind. important to start well. last thing we want it so be 20-3 or them 100-0. doesn’t matter what’s happened before, it’s australia.

Would disagree on this. Australia have a much more rounded 11. England effectively don't have a current test standard spinner available, and there are huge injury concerns regarding pretty much all their pace bowling options.

On paper Australia are a much better side than England and have to be favourites. They have the top 3 batsman in the world in their middle order right now! Plus it will be interesting to see how England go against Hazlewood and Boland.

Jofra Archer being injured for what feels like the last 2/3 years now has surely been one of the biggest losses for English Cricket.

If he was out there I'd fancy our chances a lot more.

Australia have the better bowlers. Smith and Marnus will bore any lineup to death and Head has become a lethal and consistent hitter. But Bazball makes this a very interesting series.

Don’t attempt a drive first ball. Don’t attempt a drive first ball.

5 for none? Who are these Aussies? Bunch of shit cnuts, they’re gonna get hammered.

I don’t watch much cricket

If they can see off the new ball I think there’s a huge score on offer with this pitch in this weather

Big if though
