English cricket thread

I assume this prediction guarantees my legendary status on this forum in perpetuity.

Some years back, I was chatting with some friends and telling them the the team that bats second and makes 400 in the 1st innings never loses a test match.

I wonder how much stats back that up.

Without wanting to turn the cricket thread into a chat about United, it’s really easy to see the difference in leadership and managing change from the likes of McCullum, compared to what happened last season for United.

It also shows how crucial the mental side of sport is and building up confidence through positivity. So many people got giddy with Rangnick’s honesty, but it was nothing more than a brutal example of how not to lead a group.

Yeah it was mad to see in such a short time how different the mentality of the players now is.

Alex Lees looked so terrified and nervous under the previous regime, he looks a different player now.

Justice, those 2 overs we were short really ruined the Test

Lol

I'm a bit perplexed by this - 40%! For 2 overs! Quite incredible really. You'd think if a team gets a result they'd let this go really wouldn't you...

Smacks of a governing body who don't really have a vision for how they want Test cricket to evolve so they're fiddling for the sake of it.

If I’d been at Trent Bridge I’d be demanding a refund. The test match was made an utter shambles.

Also good to see us Lancy’s will have a nice relaxing day…

I'm starting to doubt Rob Jones is gonna do a Bairstow.
Looking like a draw is our best chance now. Not watching so i don't jinx it.

Chapple and Chilton should go if we don't win anything this season.

Who are you to doubt George Balderson

The absolute timing of posting that as he gets caught. Very important cameo mind.
Baldy going to be a class player. Will give up the bowling and become a top-order batsman.

Bohannon needs to go away and clear his head for a bit.

Good job we've done most of the hard work in the Blast with the one-dayers coming up - the failure to win those CC games we dominated likely to cost us though.

Can we not get Hassan back?

Saqib Mahmood expected to join Warwickshire at the end of the season, interesting move.

Kin hell what is it with Lancs and losing players? Warwickshire took Davies from us last year too
Warwickshire are in for him but I hadn’t heard anything beyond that? They’re in for Moeen as well so who’s to say where that’s all going.

Davies going was probably as much to make room for Salt as anything. Can’t really complain at that albeit we’ll lose Salt more for internationals

Mentioned at the bottom of that article. Read elsewhere that they want Ed Barnard from Worcester as well. Considering the size of the club and the area you have to say that Warwickshire's record at developing young players themselves is pretty poor.

Agreed.

Actually, thinking about this, I'm not too bothered. Mahmood's going to be either injured or playing for England for the rest of his career I imagine.

Plus, Lancs are doing things the proper way - grow your own players and sprinkle the odd quality signing here and there. If every club worked like that, England would have a huge pool of players to choose from.

Feels like Lancs are getting loads of things right around the club atm, just as United did at the start of their golden era.

Yeah I’m feeling similar if Saqib does go, as you say England is likely to take the majority of his time going forward. Let’s see who comes through the system next.

Oh brilliant news. We need a quick bowler.

I guess he can't be that great if he wasn't picked initially! But interesting to see how he does.

Hopefully we'll get at least a couple of the quicks back over the next few months.

Has to come in for Anderson who could do with a rest. Tempted to rest Stokes as well but he won’t want that at all.

At his best I'd say Jamie is at least as good as the likes of Wood and Archer, if not better. On a bad day though he's going at 5-6 an over and he probably has a few too many of those. Find that consistency and he'll be a massive asset to this side, excellent fielder and dangerous with the bat too.

NZ's tail will definitely be getting plenty of short stuff if he plays

Good review! Sounds like he's really hit his straps recently.

We can accommodate a guy going for 5-6 an over in a five-man attack, plus Root.

Not if one of those 5 is Leach we can't...

Would be delighted to see Overton Jr get a chance though, much less pointless than wheeling out Overton Sr.

Think they're twins, so not sure the 'sr' and 'jr' tags really apply! But yeah, totally agree.

Imagine this will be Leach's last test in England. Will come back into the team when we go to Pakistan in the autumn.

Not far from the first XI, as expected.
  • Jason Roy
  • Phil Salt
  • Dawid Malan
  • Jos Buttler(wk)
  • Eoin Morgan(c)
  • Liam Livingstone
  • Moeen Ali
  • Sam Curran
  • David Willey
  • Adil Rashid
  • Reece Topley

Jamie is younger by 3 mins I believe! Made all the difference to his pace.

Interesting. Seems Morgan wants to have a good look at Salt if he's dropped Buttler and Livingstone so low down the lineup. Lot of lefties in that team as well.

Buttler’s been promoted as he normally bats down at 6 for the ODI team while Livingstone hasn’t really featured in this team much. Salt has come in as a straight swap for Bairstow.

Yeah I suppose you're still very likely to get into the game down at no.6 anyway in an ODI and Morgan seems to quite like shuffling the order to give him a left-right combo anyway. Feels like so long since I've seen England play an ODI and it's my favourite form of the game.

Thats only 4 of the usual ODI team, pretty weak by England standards! (Could say 5 if you include Mo but he’s rarely in that side since he got dropped during the early stages of the World Cup)
