English cricket thread

Root is averaging over 50 again. I hope he can consolidate that and push on. He's so much better than a 45-49 average player.

i’ll wager he never gets out in test cricket again.

Pretty impressive to be in a position to put NZ on the back foot after the first innings. That has come about through the quick scoring of Root, Pope and Stokes. A good session or two and hopefully have a real good blast at NZ in the afternoon. Draw must be massively odds on but we should be the only potential winners. Hopefully having a spinner will pay off.

That was kind of crap from Reiffel when he gave Ben Foakes out caught behind and it clearly brushed of Foakes's chest, with his hands dropped way below the line of the ball.

Thank feck for DRS.

Bit disappointed with Stokes today. You can be aggressive without being daft. Lees will also be annoyed he didn't make it to his century as I thought he played very well apart from that loose shot and the pitch was a belter.

Root and Pope though, terrific. Foakes looked pretty compact as well, hopefully he can hang around for a while tomorrow with Root and push past NZ's total. Just what England's batsmen needed this sort of flat track to get some runs on.

Are the ODIs in the Netherlands not on TV? Can't see them listed anywhere.
Had a google and Sun claimed it would be on Sky Sports Cricket, which as you suggested isn't what the Sky Sports listing thinks is happening.

My best guess is it'll be on Youtube - either Sky's one or the Dutch cricket associations channel.

Looking forward to it today. Hard one to second guess with the England tail, if we can get 50 ahead you really feel NZ will feel the pressure. No side wants the risk of losing after posting 550 first up

Yeah I just assumed Sky would be showing them but they have Blast games at the same time.

Good start from Foakes already, today should be a great opportunity for him to make a big score.

When you think of how many runs have been scored and how many drops there has been Boult has been brilliant.

Great innings from Root, he's the best batsman in the world right now.

Into the England tail now, probably won't be batting for much longer.

fecking terrible from Potts there.

A mix up is one thing but you have to sacrifice yourself there and not the actual batsman on 50.

Still 25 runs behind here. Dangerous position

Dissapointing morning, really should have got a small lead to put the pressure on.

I don't think it matters whether we have a lead or not, most important thing now is we need to have a bowl at them.

There's not many Tests where the third innings doesn't start until day 4 and we will simply run out of time to force a result.

We're nearly level and if I was Stokes I'd have been preparing to declare around level scores anyway because I can't see NZ being able to score enough runs to win - in a match like this the key is the third innings so it's just a case of how many wickets England can take between now (or when we're bowled out) and tea.

Agree. We clearly fancy a bowl at them now.

When it's flat, a big part of the game is getting the best of the conditions to bowl. Feel like we've paced our innings with that in mind.

Game is set up nicely for tomorrow.

Jamieson unlikely to be bowling could be a big factor.

Good start under McCullum. Finally playing like we have some balls. Going for the win and competing. Having a bit of positivity around doesn't half help, Silverwood was a dreary sort.

We'll probably fold for 120 now.

I’m not sure New Zealand would risk a declaration here until there’s around 70 overs left to play (if they get that far). If Boult/Southee pull up lame they’re fecked. Making the New Zealand bowlers warm up and bowl for a bit today means they’ll have done 4 days on the bounce.

Our tail is one of the most comically inept we've had for a while. Yes, they are in the side to bowl first and foremost, but with the bat in hand they have a job to do and if nothing else they should be putting some kind of price on their wicket like Hoggard did. No-one is anywhere near as bad as Chris Martin, but they just look so easy to dismiss.

From 8-11 you can get away with having a few rabbits at 10-11, but you've got to have someone there who knows which way round to hold the bat or someone who will try and support Ben Foakes or whoever is the senior batsman.

Maybe we should bring in Jamie Overton from Surrey for an experiment in the 3rd test. I've never understood why England have not given him a go, especially given that he looks a bit quicker than most in the CC.

If Leach had gone in at 8 and hung around with Foakes I reckon England would have got 20-30 more. Potts batting ahead of him was daft.

Not sure the tail is the biggest concern in the world. You have to pick your best bowlers in test cricket and then hope one or two can bat. It's the weakest one we've had for a while but they've got the bowling selection right, except maybe Leach.

Wouldn't be averse to that. Big strong lad, quick bowler, can give the ball a thump, think he's a decent fielder too. Even better, he's not Craig Overton. Got to drop Leach as well, offers bugger all with bat or ball tbh. Parkinson is already a much better bowler IMO and has room to develop as well.

I’m still to be convinced that there’s any better spinners than Moeen knocking around in England, he’s overqualified for a number 8 bat too.

Oh please no, I don't want to see more of the same old shit trot out. Time to look to the future.

Agree with this, Leach has a reasonable defence and can at least be trusted to dig in. If he'd come out and been able to bat with Foakes we may have been able to sneak a small lead.

It's only been 2 innings I know but Potts has looked terrible with the bat.

Leach has looked downright poor this test though, utterly harmless with the ball. The Kiwi spinner looks twice the bowler already.
