English cricket thread

It's a good watch, England have let the run rate get away from them a bit, and the Root drop might prove costly. t

350+ and NZ in the driving seat. Maybe even 300+

Just checked Michael Bracewell's career averages. Seems ambitious to describe him as an all rounder. 27 first class wickets in 90+ games @ 47.50...

Leach is the most tedious spinner i've seen England consistently pick in a long while. So, so average.

Is he the most limited player ever to get 25 caps for England?

Feel harsh asking this, as he's clearly a top lad and makes the most of his talent, but he doesn't really bat or field and his bowling doesn't seem to be progressing at all.

Sorry, don't mean this to be harsh - not here to be a keyboard troll. Just feel like his level is more county than international.

Giles played over 50. Would take Leach over Giles without question.
Really? Giles batted 8 and was a good fielder. Feel like they're similar kinds of bowlers but Leach's average is better due to playing the majority of his tests in Asia.

Edit: sorry, half his tests in Asia.

I don't rate Phil Tuffnell and Ashley Giles any higher than Leach.

England haven't had much luck with spinners outside of Swann.

Yes Ali had his moments in England but was never going to spin you to victory away to India, Pakistan or keep an end tight in Australia. And Monty had his moments but had as much variety as a bag of ready salted.

Would argue that Monty and Tufnell both more talented bowlers than Leach and Moeen a much better all-round package.

What!? WHAT!?

Absolutely painful watching him bowl.

I rate Tufnell a bit. He played with some dross.

Swann > Moeen > Tufnell > Panesar = Leach > Giles.

That's rating them as players, not specifically their bowling.

We can throw in Salisbury at the end to make Giles feel better but only 15 matches I didn't think he made the cut.

The only spinner I've seen less threatening than Leach is Dom Bess. Christ he is shit.

Do think Stokes has to take some blame for bowling here.

Trying to protect the top order maybe. You have to be pretty certain of bowler friendly conditions to do that, and it didn’t seem like it was a cert.

Monty is being under rated a bit here. 2012 in India he was tremendous.. consistency was his problem..

Yeah, he was unfortunate in a way to overlap with Swann. We haven't had a spinner as good as those two before or since.

Agree completely here, I really don't see what he brings to the table besides maybe going at 3.5 an over at home. He's not a matchwinner at all, at least Parkinson could become one.

There's almost no point even mentioning Swann.

He is a total anomaly when it comes to English spin bowling, the only genuinely world class one i've ever seen us have.

Leach is a good spinner but needs to be bowling regularly to be at his best. He probably shouldn't have been picked here given the concussion and that meaning he's gone nearly a month without bowling. Could have played in the Championship round starting tomorrow and if that went well then possibly come back for the 3rd test.

Also.. that Sussex collapse in the Blast last night was probably the worst I've seen!

Have to be taking those, that was a standard catch.

Well done Blundell. Deserved his 100 having missed out the last game.

A lot of focus on how shit our batting and bowling is but our fielding may be our absolute worst trait.

Shocking amount of drops and misfields in the last few years

Fielding is always the tell tale sign of a struggling team.

Correct. Catches win games... Mitchell was on 3 and it would have been 169-5 when Root dropped that dolly for example.

Yeah, it's a story that has happened over and over again.

We often get into positions where we're poised to take control and then there's a drop or a stupid batting mistake and it all collapses.
