English cricket thread

A cozy, rainy morning on a Saturday I don’t have to work, a lamb kebab and the Ashes. Simple joys in life eh?

Should probably be dropped.

He's been good with the ball in English conditions in the last few summers.

He can't be described as an all rounder anymore though.

Bairstow is the one that without a shadow of a doubt needs to be dropped.

He's fecking awful.

Think it's time to drop Bairstow and Ali, both look so out of touch. Send them back to their counties and give them some much needed time away from the test arena.

Yeah, that’s what I’d do. Would also try to find a way to get Archer into the side.

Bairstow needs to stop trying to belt the colour off the ball all the time.

He's your best spinner, why would you drop him? Rashid is nowhere as good.

How many players like Moeen have there been in test cricket who come into the side as a top order batsman, then becomes a batsman who can bowl a bit, then becomes a batsman and first pick spinner and now is just a spinner?

He was originally selected as an all rounder iirc with a heavy focus on his batting ability lower down the order. His form with the bat in both tests and ODI's has been very poor for quite a while now. Sending him back to play County cricket where he can hopefully regain some form with the bat wouldn't be a bad thing imo.

I can't remember too many guys with 5 test centuries who eventually become so bad they're basically number 11's.

That Donald Trump bartender while Atherton was trying to have a serious discussion

Wouldn’t be a bad thing at all for the sake of his batting. But England might need him for his bowling more.

I think Bairstow deserves more scrutiny, currently in the side because he is seen as a better batsman than Foakes but he hasn’t delivered since he came back to the side as a specialist batsman.

May well regret this one but I'd be a lot more worried about facing the spin batting last on this if Nathan Lyon wasn't a pretty average bowler.

I think he's a good bowler.

He'll be very difficult in the 4th innings. Especially with so many of our batsmen out of nick.

He's got couple wickets for 100 on a pitch that's doing plenty for him. His overall average is the wrong side of 32 and going in the wrong direction last two years.

He's fine. He deserves his place and he's the best they've had since Warne but I think he's only decent. I don't think he's good.

Well I'll be delighted to proven wrong I promise you!

Bairstow need a a rest. I'm not giving up on him later this series though. Refocus needed. Kick up the ass required. Roy is never a test opener. Ali clinging on for his bowling. Aussies have just as many problems going to a very close series.

Broad has cemented his place in the side for the series. Great batting from him so far so go along with his 5fer.

Just goes to show how competition for hire place can bring you up another level.

I think his role in the ODI side has ruined his batting. Coming in at 7 or 8 for just a few overs with the requirement to smash away from the first ball has played havoc to his technique and mindset. I’m guessing he has practiced for that role so much, he has lost many of his original batting traits and can’t bat well in either format. He batting wasn’t great in IPL for Bangalore either.

As others have posted, he needs a few long big innings at county level to regain his test technique and confidence. But then who do England pick as the spinner?

He is a very important part of the test team and if he could regain his former batting skills, is one of the first names on the team sheet. Quite a dilemma.
