Harmison spot on. This starts and stops primarily with the batting line-up, and the shocking options on offer. They are honestly fecking shite and, bar Root, are perhaps collectively the worst we've had in the modern test era.

We will never know how well they bowled because of the standard they were bowling against.
It's a bit like Leicester and Watford smashing us. How good were they? Or are we just so so so you literally can't fail.

There will be a focus on how well Australia bowled, which will be used as an excuse to ensure nothing changes for England. It will be presented as though England could have done nothing to avoid this outcome.
It really won't mate the whole team is being crucified.

On the bright side, it's nice for a new generation to experience this. The thought of people who started watching England in like 2005 never having had to suffer anything like the nineties did always bother me a bit.

We did at least have the excuse back then that many sides had ridiculously good bowling attacks.
It'd be even nice to have started watching anytime from 2014 onwards too... since you seemingly don't acknowledge the crippling losses in 06 and 14.... 14 was fecking putrid.

Surely silverwood will be sacked, i suspect root was planning on resigning his captaincy anyway. And I think broad and Anderson should retire i think there days are done.
The team needs stripping out with only stokes, root and archer (if fit) as gaurentees for the next test series. New captain (stokes probably) and new coach and then after that who knows? Crawley and pope have bags of potential hopefully they both play the last two tests for experience if nothing else. Can't make my mind up about hameed just seems to find ways of getting out neither buttler or bairstow for me should be taking the gloves in test matches. What a mess.

All relative. We've posted incredibly low batting totals, so teams haven't had to chase/draw out their innings too much. What's the use in taking wickets at 24.13 if the opposition is chasing 150?
Obvious answer would be to televise the county games on terrestrial. If you want people to get into it you have to make it more easily available. Once they're into county they'd be much more likely to pay to watch Sky or whatever for Tests so it's got to be a good financial move as well as good for the game. They could also invite schools to bring kids along and that kind of thing if they wanted to get numbers up in the crowds for some days.

Most sides have good bowling attacks right now. Even England’s isn’t terrible with a fit Archer until Anderson retires.
Our fast bowling is honestly fine, I think. Plenty there.

Anderson just proved he’s England’s best bowler and still capable at this level.
Nah, the next generations in this country don't have the attention spans for it - nor are we good enough anymore to force their attention away from whatever else. It's the same reason Baseball has gone from being America's top sport to well.... miles behind the pace of the growth of NBA/NFL.
All a bit odd given all these other sports now love the numbers and statistical depth that both Baseball/Cricket have had for over 100 years.

I'd sack off quite a few of them and try some other options. 3 or 4 new batsmen in there feels like what we need. Bohannon, Hain, Livingstone, Duckett, whoever it is we have to try something different. These guys can obviously potentially improve with better coaching, captaincy, form etc etc but they're so far off the mark I just don't see how we can justify yet another year of same old same old. They're never going to be part of a top Test team most of them.
Better analysis from Moeen & Trott since the game ended, may have judged them a bit too quickly
Yet we still go with the same bowlers who can swing in english conditions every time. The batting line-up is awful, and deserves the brunt but the team selection is abysmal and it has been for decades. I know we have some injuries but it doesn't take a genius to look at Broad's figures in Australia and see he won't do any better at 35 while the like of Mahmood are sitting doing nothing.

The other 267 match (Eng v NZ 1958) is the most brutal, contemptuous scorecard possible.
e - nvm first 2 days were washed out. declaring at 2 down in the first innings makes a lot more sense.

I mean England surely should not be this God-awful, the same way that United cannot possibly be as insipid as they look whenever they play, well, anyone.
But there is such a malaise about both teams and the incompetence of the leadership coupled with the lack of direction is crippling the efforts of the players.

And yet the bowling was improved in this match. You can have all of the star bowlers who want but means feck all if you can’t score runs.
Generally agree with that.
The only real issue is playing Broad who has always been a flat track bully with a terrible record both in Australia and India.
