English cricket thread

Is Root a proven three though? Haven't most of his runs come at four or five?

Can see Denly lasting one test in the Ashes and then Sibley coming in.

They have. I suppose I meant he has a proven temperament/skillset to come in there given he's done so in ODIs and his average is still 40+ at 3 in tests. There is an argument for moving Root as your best batsman to 3 in lieu of any proper 3s, but the counter as you say is that he's played better lower down and wants to play lower down himself.

To be honest my worry is that wherever Root plays he'll find himself coming in with no runs on board having to repair our innings.

So no link then.

Mate just take it down a notch, ok? None of the English fans in this thread hate India as much as you seem to hate England. We all come in peace.

He's the Glaston of India.

Root was slagging off the pitch too by the way. Said it wasn't test standard, doesn't sound like the words of a man who got the pitch he wanted.

I didn't know how huge that was in Ireland until fairly recently.

Absolutely huge packed out stadiums for it.

What's the atmosphere like for it? Be good to go to one.

The best sport in Ireland at the moment, and for the last few years. The skill levels and drama are just ridiculous.

And my team were out before the championship even really got going :D

Hmmm... a test match hosted in England which means they have all the influence on conditions.
Isn't that the exact point of having home advantage?

Just like when India produces 'roads' or 'dust bowls' to suit their own selections?

I really don't understand what your complaint is based upon.

That's my very point. I'm not complaining.

Take what down a notch? I've shown no disrespect to any poster - you all seem like sound people to me. In fact, I've shown no hate towards England at any point in this thread. Seeing them get bowled out in one session in conditions that they most definitely would have requested is funny.

England 11 for first test

Certain to play if fit - Roy,Root ,Buttler ,Stokes , Bairstow,Ali,Broad ,Woakes and Anderson

That leaves 2 spots . Ideally I would like to see one out of Denly & Burns and then Curran but I can see England going with both Denly & Burns .No chance they will leave Bairstow out even though he really doesn't look like he should be playing. I am assuming Archer isn't available. No idea what they do if he is available

"I don't like saying this but the wicket was substandard for a Test match," Root said. "I thought it wasn't… not even close to a fair contest between bat and ball throughout the whole game.

Would be a more convincing argument if your number 11 hadn't hit ninety fecking two.

Leach got those runs because he was a number 11 though didn't he. With no pressure on him, he could smash the ball around and the Ireland bowlers didn't know what to do. Maybe the specialist batsmen should have followed suit, although they probably think they'll get slaughtered if they do. It's a tricky one.

If people like De Grandhomme and Murtagh are proving impossible to play, maybe Lords needs to take a look at its pitches.

You were all giving it the big I am when you were deluded enough to think you could beat us though.

Is that what you really think?

Despite me saying...

*Not my joke :)

... i.e., a joke I stole from someone else.

But don't worry, I'll be more than happy to gloat when you get beaten by some team who play for a country where this sport actually registers as more than a blip :)

Don't think that's a very fair description of how Leach batted, tbh. I think he got runs because he batted like a remotely competent batsman should bat on a pitch with a bit in it. At least until he got to 50, he was compact, played the ball late under his eyes, and didn't play at anything too wide he didn't need to play at. Someone said on comms, and they were right, that if you didn't know Leach was a number 11 you wouldn't have guessed.

It's something we've seen before with Woakes, too, where he'll come in and just play quite competently in an orthodox manner and make it look much easier than the specialist batsmen above him. I just think Root is, typically, making excuses for this teams inability to play proper test match cricket and adapt to conditions.

Yeah you're right. He didn't just have a swing, he played some lovely shots.

Does seem weird that this keeps happening though - the top order fails and a lower-order batsman comes in and bails us out. Seems like we need a new batting coach asap.

8 games in the blast today and not a single one on TV . Can not wait for the hundred to come in next season

Joe Root is complaining

England’s bowlers will not thank Joe Root for it but their captain was highly critical of the Lord’s pitch after his side’s 143-run victory against Ireland. “I don’t like saying this but the wicket was substandard for a Test match,” Root said after Ireland were bowled out for 38. “It wasn’t even close to being a fair contest between bat and ball throughout the whole game.”

What is it with these snowflake English batsmen?? Such moaners when they don't get wickets which make sure they look good.

I don't ever hear bowlers complain when they have to play on flat tracks designed purely for batsmen.

Why don't they just learn to bat properly then like great test batsman from the past?

To be honest I think Root is mentally a bit frazzled right now. Look at his dismissal in the 2nd innings here.

The schedule is always intense but this summer is mental and it has to be taking a toll on him.

Going into a World Cup as huge favourites knowing it was now or never to finally win it whilst also having to think about and prepare for the Ashes must be very tough. And in between that he has what he must have thought would be a nice easy test against Ireland that turned into a real struggle for the first two days before we blew them away yesterday.

He looked exhausted to me.

People are going to shoot me down but I would bring Ballance back in at number 3 for the 1st test. Second highest run scorer in the county game at the moment and 4 test match centuries. Don’t think the selectors will throw Sibley in yet but if the openers don’t perform he will be in very soon.

What happened to that young opener (from Yorkshire?).

I know he fell apart last year but are there any signs of recovery?

It's like when we played South Africa at Jo'burg last year where the ball was doing all sorts and, IIRC, South Africa didn't want to continue playing but we did. A test side may have come to close to chasing down 181 yesterday - although Joe probably would have complained then, too. Test cricket should always be a test - wickets in the UK should always offer swing and seam to the fast bowlers.

It wasn't even particularly tough:
