England vs Iceland

So woy's bringing back sterling and Kane now according to the papers.

Hodgson has the distinct whiff of not knowing what he's doing this tournament.

Is it just me or is the England first XI always being leaked earlier than other teams?

Not sure. Always seem to know it the day before, but can't say I follow any of the other national team news.

What are the odds on Iceland winning? As a manc overseas who gets paid in pounds and has to convert his income into local currency to access it i've just about taken a 15% pay cut even though i can't vote. if i put 5k on Iceland and win it might just cover my losses for the year...feckxit

I've done a full 180 and have gone from rooting for England this tournament to hoping they get smashed, all because of Brexit.

Yes I'm bitter like that.

erm...tongue in cheek and all that. if it helps i'd pretend to bet on England but the pretend winnings won't equal the real losses.

Of course i want England to win, need a bloody smile.

You're stopping at this tournmanet?!

Our last two were a shambles.

So he's going to replace Lallana - someone who's been fairly good/decent, but can't finish - with Sterling... who has been absolutely abject, and can't finish.

Makes sense.

Iceland is really going mental over this one. People wearing the Iceland shirt to work, putting the national flag on top of their cars. Even people who have barely watched a single football match in their life, before this tournament, are turning into massive fans - it's quite amazing.

Every housewife and her dog will be watching.

Not very optimistic about getting through, but in football you always have a chance.

Come on Iceland!

Lallana can't last more than an hour, so it does sort of make sense to bring him on later when the opponents are tired, and he's fresh. As Iceland are going to defend with 11 behind the ball then playing Sterling also makes sense as he'll stay wide to try and stretch Iceland out more, playing Lallana means more players packed into the middle of the pitch, which just causes congestion.

Doesn't it make more sense to bring on pacey players later into the game when the opposition are tired?

The Sterling you're talking about would do that to Iceland... the Sterling at ths tournament however will get the ball, dither on it, make a bad decision, and lose it.

I hope I'm wrong and he's had some sort of magical rehabilitation... but it, once again, seems like an odd and unneccesary risk from Roy.

Odds on Iceland winning is around 8.5 so if you put 5k, you will get back 42,500  not sure how much you are earning but I'm sure 37,500 should be enough to cover your salary deduction for the year! I'm tipping Iceland to win 1-0. Their fairytale will continue.

Absolutely flabbergasted by this. Sterling is bereft of confidence following 2 awful performances. I'm not Lallana's biggest fan but surely he has done more in this tournament to justify selection? We're about to go up against Iceland who it's fairly clear will sit deep and challenge us to break them down. That obviously isn't the type of player Sterling is, of the 2 it would be Lallana that would unlock the door for us. The same goes for Kane, woefully out of form and yet recalled. We haven't played for a week so Hodgson has no excuses for not going in at full strength. I honestly don't know what goes through his head sometimes, if the starting XI predicted by the BBC (Hart, Walker, Cahill, Smalling, Rose, Alli, Dier, Rooney, Sterling, Kane, Sturridge) is true then I think we will struggle tonight.

Sterling and Kane have been far and away England's 2 worst players, why the hell is he playing them in the most important game of his career

It does make a lot of sense to bring the pacey players on as the opposition are tiring, which is probably why Vardy is on the bench (I'm assuming he is anyway). He could always bring Rashford on for Sterling later, although that may be too brave a step for Roy.

Could be one of many reasons. Given how precious Roy is about press criticism, though, I wouldn't be surprised if he was selecting Kane & Sterling out of sheer bloodymindedness. He's similar to LVG in that way.

Roy bringing Sterling back in is total madness. He's looked poor in the Euros and poor for City. Total madness from Woy. If Sterling starts, he'll not play for 90 mins.

I'm no Llalana fan, but he did really well last time, why drop him?

I'm finding it difficult to muster enthusiasm for England. We need a more gung-ho manager. Also starting a new FA. Greg Dyke FFS?! Can England retire from International football?

I'm in post-Brexit meltdown and gutted both Irelands went out.

Roy loves challenges. So he is creating new ones.

Play Vardy wide, Kane and Sterling start. Put Wilshere in middle, and we are good to go here.

We'll beat Iceland, get knocked out heroically in the quarters (again) and Roy'll get a contract extension.

As usual I have woken up with absurd optimism for a 4-0 piss-easy win. I'm sure it will be a dull 1-0 win going either way.

I'm having to DVR it and watch later though.

Judging from this thread, the value of Sterling seems to be lower than ever.

Or is that the other thread?

For shame!

But when he falls below one Lallana you know he's in trouble.

Things are going crazy here in Iceland and people are sure we will beat England..
I am not that sure but will give it a 1-1 FT ... After that who knows. But all in all I just want us to give the English a really tough match we have already exceeded our expectations anything more than this is a huge plus.

Come on Iceland.....

So, given the events over the weekend - How much will the neutrals boo England's every touch today?

Will be a tough game, I expect Iceland to be defensive and England to be constantly attacking but I can see Iceland going on the counter a few times but I think we should smash them 2-1 after extra time.
