England v Sri Lanka

He also played a crucial part in the third game of the Super 8 series against Sri Lanka, stroking 52 off 53 balls and initiating a late revival in a near run-a-ball partnership of 87 with wicket-keeper batsman Paul Nixon. This partnership set-up a tense finale with England needing 12 from the last over. A streaky single from Sajid Mahmood on the second last ball of the innings left Bopara on strike with England 3 runs short of the win off the last ball. With tension levels going into over-drive, Sri Lankan paceman Ranjit Fernando played his joker by running in and completing his action without delivering the ball. A stunned Bopara faced up to the re-take by backing away to leave room for a big cover drive but a subtle change of pace from Fernando saw the ball crashing into the stumps to leave England 3 runs short of the victory. However, the excellent temperment and resillience he showed during his innings will surely have left Bopara somewhat closer to cementing his place in the England one-day team.

You did that?

Why would you bother?

I was reading his page to find out whether he's half-Indian or full. It seemed appropriate to make an edit. I got somewhat carried away with the detail though.

My version was better. That's sentence has 6 fecking sub-clauses. It looks like it's been written by Joseph Conrad.

Feel so deflated. That would have been England's best one day win ever had they done it.
Still, Bring on McGrath & co on Easter Sunday.

absolutely gutting :(

just goes to show...top order is tooooo slooooow!

Slow because they lost two early wickets maybe? Bell and Pieterrsen were going well.

But it was a fairly typical England performance really. Got three-quarters of the game right. But we all know that's never been enough.

Have any of the cnuts talked about how they know 'it's not good enough' and that they really 'need to step up to the mark' and contribute more etc, etc?

not slow they just cant stop getting out,it's annoying vaughan contributes nothing with the bat nowdays, joyce seems like an easy scalp lately and bell is far from a big hitter in the power plays. We should have thought about this before ,it's nothing new really and just ignorance.Mal loye didn't deserve to be dropped imo if your gonna take nixon for e.g.and why was prior not taken either instead of nixon, not a bad wicket keeper and a good pinch hitter.Oh well we have to play with what we got stuart broad has been called up aswell for lewis and is a good prospect.

Before I forget a special mention to bopora, brilliant innings nealry salvaging a win from a seemingly impossible position, hopefully will be put up the order now.

 not slow? we been watching the same team? even before Joyce was out yesterday, the first 3 overs went at a run rate of about 1!

Vaughan, Joyce and Bell are not big hitters. even when they stay in, they don't exactly set the scoreboard alight. Bell only really came to life yesterday when KP came in.

yeah that is true and what is wrong with our team tbh,it's not uncommon for the first few overs to go for hardly any runs for the batsmen to size up the conditions well and i was getting frustrated too at the lack of urgency in the shots but also our top three will not win us many games plodding around and then getting out giving added pressure on the middle order. This happens far too much, pity we don't have a player like tres to make use of the powerplays.Only other options would be to promote k.p to 3 which i feel he should bat anyway but then again he will most likely be opening with joyce or vaughan getting out.

It's Joyce and Vaughan who're the main culprits. Bell's done OK and was unlucky to get out in that fashion yesterday.

Joyce and Vaughan are more test players to be fair to them. but yes, Trescothick is (or rather was) the answer. and yes, Bell did well with KP.

if Strauss should be replacing anyone, it should be Vaughan...but then we lose his captaincy so it's lose/lose really.

i remember in one of our last games against Australia, Flintoff promoted himself ahead of Strauss to pick up the run rate and was subsequently out for a duck. so Strauss came in and got his best score of the tournament...batting like a man with a point to prove. if he can come out with that same indignation he could be a good opener. i wouldn't swap him for Bell, that's for sure.

Agree with this, really is a messed up situation. We have in effect only one real opener in vaughan even joyce comes in at 3-4 for middlesex and is far more effective there and shouldnt be opening. As you said the flintoff thing hasn't worked, pietersen has the tools to play anywere imo and could open but then again losing him early really could affect us badly same with freddie. Then you have bell who is a position to high.Strauss could be the answer to this as opening is natural to him and even though he had a bad ashes maybe the change of scenery might help him to rediscover his touch and its hard to drop vaughaun as his captaincy and field placings ensure we are allways in the game.I would like to see vaughan open with strauss,k.p at 3,bell 4,colly 5,fred 6,bopara 7,nixon 8,saj 9,jimmy 10 and monty 11.

agree with the personnel (sorry Joyce :( ) but i think i like Bell and KP where they are atm...altho they could experiment and switch over against Bangla and the Windies.

Edmund can come sit with me :D

It's a strange situation with Vaughan. We all know that as a captain there's no-one comparable (at least for England). We also know that he's fragile - to put it kindly - and that he hasn't made a score for quite some time, even before his latest injury comeback. All those injuries have slowed him down as well, so his fielding isn't exactly lightning quick.

The question seems to be: Can England afford to pick someone for their captaincy alone and ignore their lack of a contribution otherwise?

We did it before with Brearley but I'm not sure you can carry a player like that anymore.

it's tough but he has to be risked at the moment.

there simply isn't anyone good enough to take his place. Fred's banned (and shit), Colly's too inexperienced and Strauss was at the helm for the 5-0 Sri Lanka drubbing last year.

he got shafted yesterday...and he has a good record against the aussies. persevere, i say.

Let's hope he and England come good in time.

Typical England though.

true story.

we've got a pretty proven tail now. and the middle order is (usually) excellent (when Fred can pull his finger out). the top order shouldn't be afraid to just have a flipping go. they're getting out for ducks anyway...might as well go down swinging.

It's such a shame our two best openers (Tresco and Knight) are no longer playing.

Tres made 250+ in some limited overs match at the weekend against some minor county:

Tresco

You should have spelt it 'pwned'.

They'd have had no answer to that.

SL was slacking down when they realized Eng sucked so badly :)
SL shouldnt have given them the finger, cuz they tried to take the arm :)
