England v New Zealand 2013 Cricket

Swann out of the game and the series because of some elbow trouble. Off to America to see a specialist.

Swann loss not disastrous, apart from perhaps in the slips. Monty deserves a bit of a go.

Compton gets a duck.

I'd like to see Root in the side ahead of him, but may aswell give him the series now anyway.

I think long term everyone including Compton himself would be surprised if the plan was not for Bairstow to be number 6, with Root opening. He just has to make the most of it while he is there.

I think Compton is in due to superb domestic performances on the premise he will be a steady head going into the back to back Ashes series. As opposed to packing the side with youth.

Bell, you're better than that.

Ian fecking Bell.

Does he ever pull a big knock out the bag unless he rolls in at 250-3?

Oh but wait, he plays a lovely cover drive

I have had a problem with Bell from day one of his career TBH :D

England surpassing themselves for spontaneous shiteness here.

Very good from the Kiwis but poor batting from England.

I've been impressed with McCullum's captaincy.

Another wicket

Someone needs to tell them it's Test cricket not T20.

What's going on, its bizarre play.

Is this a WUM by England?

Beyond belief this shot making.

What is it with England being so utterly useless at opening matches in tests? First innings in particularly is almost always an utter disgrace. Our record in them, particularly away games is beyond awful.

At least we do have a good habit of bouncing back from them, but in a 3 match series its really going to leave us up against it.

Even if our bowlers perform very well and get them out for 250ish, we're still going to be 100 behind. Little pressure on New Zealand's batting line up either so i'd expect them to do pretty well.

Might be unfair to single him out, but Broad once again doesn't contribute with the bat after a stupid shot, his batting hasn't been up to it since the India series 18 months ago now, and his bowling certainly isn't justifying selection. Woakes really deserves to be given a go ahead of him, far better first class batting and bowling averages, if we're not going to give him a chance of even being in the squad agaisnt New Zealand, when are we?

Hopefully Tremlett can get over his injury problems in time for the Ashes.

Still a rubbish score, but a hell of a lot better than it looked when Finn and Anderson walked in. Although if two batsmen with first class averages of under 10 can put on a stand of 47 with relative ease, that's quite worrying from England's bowling perspective. Most the wickets lost were stupid shots rather than unplayable bowling.

Smoked.

Apparently this Rutherford who is the son of Ken Rutherford is supposed to be the bees knees. Saw him play some promising lads out here about 2 years ago and he absolutely toweled them all.

Damn! I must be pilling on the years as I have faded memories of watching Ken Rutherford bat. Now his son is playing. fecking A!

Good on NZ, they needed this after the horror show in South Africa.

Lol Kin Rutherfid, Denny Morrison, Martin Crowe, Ian Smuth, John Wright, Chris Herris.

Thems were the days!

This has to be the worst opening day we've had in quite some years (and there's been some shockers), usually we're at least decent at bowling but even that's been off. Shocking all over, batting, fielding, bowling. Desperately dissapointing. Not a single performance to be happy with. Even Finn and Anderson's decent stand served only to highlight the awful performance of those who came in before them.

The only one I remember is Chris Harris. The rest, either I have never seen play or have very faded memories of. Have heard a lot about Crowe.

I like Danny. He is part of the commentary team on a couple of channels in this part of the world. Very funny!

Anyways, this test match is almost gone for England, unless there is a feck up of epic proportions from the Kiwis. Will have to check the highlights of Rutherford's innings later in the day.

Well this is surprising.

If England lose this it will be their 4th successive 1st test series defeat overseas.

We are always shit in the first test of an overseas series. Preparation needs to be looked at.

Preparation is not the issue here IMO. ECB is excellent in that regard and always make sure that the English Cricket Team gets two or three tour matches to prepare for the new tour.

It's more of a mental thing.

I do think this New Zealand team is slightly underrated but yeah bad start from England.
