England V Australia
2nd Ashes Test
Lord's, London
16th - 20th July 2009

The second test starts at Lords on Thursday 16th July. England have not won an Ashes test at Lord’s since 1934, which may the be reason why the ECB decided to make it the second test match this year.

Lord’s, the home of cricket, has a seating capacity of 29,000 and is the largest Cricket Ground in England. Its the home to the Ashes urn which is kept in the museum with a replica being given to the winning team.

Lord’s is famous for the Old Father Time Weather Vane, the Long Room and the Lord's Media Centre, which opened in 1999. One of Lord’s most unique features its famous slope across the pitch - the north-west side of the playing surface is nearly eight feet higher than the south-east side. The two ends at Lord’s are the Nursery End and the Pavillion End.

England squad: AJ Strauss (capt), AN Cook (Essex), RS Bopara (Essex), KP Pietersen (Hampshire), PD Collingwood (Durham), MJ Prior (Sussex, wkt), A Flintoff (Lancashire), SCJ Broad (Nottinghamshire), GP Swann (Nottinghamshire), JM Anderson (Lancashire), MS Panesar (Northamptonshire), IR Bell (Warwickshire), G Onions (Durham), SJ Harmison (Durham)

Australia Squad: TBA

Listening to Andy Flower on SSN a little earleir it sounds like Flintoff will be rested for Lords with the hope that he recovers more fully in time for Edgbaston.

Bad news. Were obviously going to miss hit bowling, but his batting in looking good at the moment.

I guess if Flintoff is out, then Broad will keep his place.

I think it will be...

Strauss, Cook, Bopara, Pietersen, Collingwood, Prior, Broad, Swann, Anderson, Onions, Harmison

If Flintoff is fit, then i would drop Broad.

SKY are reporting that the desision will be made on Wednesday on Flintoff.
But it is not looking good , he had to have an injection in his knee forthe discomfort, these injection are noot godd and sometimes do more harm that good.
We need Flintoff ,but a fully fit one and a pale copy

Flintoff was at dinner with Stephen Fry this evening. Freddie told Stephen he reckons he'll be fit for Thursday and Stephen just told me via Twitter.

Twitter > Western medicine

You're probably right with this, but it looks a long tail with Broad at seven.

From BBC - "England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff to hold news conference about his future".

BBC >>>> Twitter.

This sounds worrying. End of his test career?

It could even be Bell at 6 in place of Broad. Or they could put Bopara down the order and Bell at 3.

Flintoff is set to announce his retirement from test cricket after this series. I don’t quite understand the wisdom behind announcing this now. Its only going to give the Ausies even move of a boost.

To me it suggests he won't play much more of a part in this series. You could see that Strauss was having to mollycoddle him at Cardiff by using him in short spells. We need to forget about him for test cricket and move on, like with Vaughan.

I'm not even sure he deserves a place, he hasn't really performed to the standard we all know he can - with either bat or ball in recent times.

Maybe injuries have taken the toll, personally I think he's pissed his career up against the wall since the glory of the 2005 Ashes.

Sad about Freddie retiring after the ashes, let's hope he gives it his all now and bring the ashes home.

Flintoff's talking now.

What remains of the Ashes will be his last involvement in Test cricket.

As to Lord's, Bell surely has to play at 3.

Shame about the injuries.

Not the same watching him bowl 10 or 4 overs in limited overs cricket.

A Flintoff stat for people - during the last few years when England have had Freddie in the side the team has a had a victory rate of around 1 in 8, when he has been absent it ahs been 1 in 2. Hm.

Update -

It has just emerged that there is another thing to worry England fans, SSN are saying taht Pietersen is only rated as 50/50 to play.

If we were to lose KP to injury it would be a huge blow! Although the other better might realise that they can't rely on KP and step up to the plate.

Further update -

Ian Bell has been released from the squad.

Kevin Pietersen had to have an injection in his back prior to the Cardiff test and has had one in his achilles yesterday ahead of Lord's.

Broad, Harmison and Onions all in their respective country squads today.

I think thats a bit unfair.

The only criticism i would have of him was going to the IPL when there were still doubts over his fitness. He went and got injured.

It is fair to say i think that the selectors had expectations of him that he could no longer meet. Not as an all-rounder/where he was in the order.

He wasnt great in Cardiff, but he was still performed better than any other English all rounder could have performed.

Even if the selectors lowered their expectations, he would still be the best all round option in England.

Its just his body that cant hold out any longer.

so if we win the toss will we bat or field.

either is a daunting prospect, when you consider australia'a dominance at Lords historically. the top order look good on paper but short on runs in practice.

I may be bored enough today to pay some attention to this.

On the other hand, that may only be because I'm paying some attention to it in the first place.

It's like a vicious circle I'm not even trapped in

Strauss, Cook, Bopara, Pietersen, Collingwood, Prior, FLintoff, Broad, Swann, Anderson, Onions

Disappointed that Harmison is not in the team,I have my doubts has to Flintoff being fully fit,but we shall see.
What has shocked me is Englands very poor record in tests v the Aussies at Lords.
Going back to 1934 in the last 18 we have won only 1 Lost 9 and drew 8 ,and our 1 win was in 1934 so that's 75 years without a win ,one must be due.
To stand any chance of taking back the Ashes we need to win this one,yes a draw would do,but a win would improve the teAm spirit no end.

Our feeble attempt at getting the Aussie's out in Cardiff should have resulted in a bigger change than just Monty out for Onions. Harmison has been on fire lately.

Australia settled this game for a draw when they didn't select Clark. Bunch of fecking idiots. No wonder we're getting hammered. IT DIDN'T WORK AT CARDIFF, SO WHY PLAY IT AGAIN!

Didn't work at Cardiff? They would've won if not for 1 wicket. Worked pretty damn well. His replacement Hilfenhaus was probably the best bowler there.

I'm talking about Hauritz and Siddle. Both completely useless and Clark couldn't be any worse. The Lords pitch is known to favor godd seam bowling as the English cricket team found out when Glen McGrath ripped a hole bigger then Girish's anus through them in 2005.

Clark bangs the ball in hard like Glenn and gets the results.

As for Hauritz. My left nut gets better movement then his spinners. Bowled pathetically badly at Cardiff and only saved by a bunch of daft shots from English batsman.
