England v Australia - Fifth Ashes Test - The Oval

 At Cricket fans acting as if this win actually means something.

The England, Wales and South Africa cricket team has beaten Australia in a month long friendly match... how that merits wall to wall news coverage and wild hysteria from the fans is beyond me.

Ah well, at least the CP will cease to exist this time next week.

I bet those in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the West Indies would have something to say about that.

Isn't there a cricket world cup or something?

Winning that would certainly be something of note. Whereas all the Ashes is, is a meaningless (in a global sense) head to head match.... A bit like the Charity Shield in football.

the world cup is one-day cricket, whereas the ashes is test, test cricket only has the ashes so there is no competition.

If you have to ask whether there is "a cricket world cup or something" then your opinion on the importance of the Ashes is useless.

It is the most important competition that England participate in.

It is a big enough trophy to knock Australia from the top of the world rankings.

Mel Gibson, Nicole Kidman, Dame Edna, Rolf Harris, Russell Crowe, Kylie Minogue, Ricky Ponting - can you hear me... Ricky Ponting! your boys took one hell of a beating.

Simon Cowell is a huge cricket fan, I can imagine him laughing in Danni Minogue's face right now.

I'm Indian, and I have always maintained that the Ashes is the biggest tournament in cricket. I'm sure many Indians and Pakistanis agree with me.

India v Pakistan for me.

I didn't know that you're Indian btw. Thought you were Aussie.

Anyway, well done, England!

Nice to see any team of Ponting's lose.. although I was disappointed when he got out, played magnificently till then.

Well then, if the biggest 'tournament' in Cricket is contested between only two teams, then the sport has a big problem.

Tell me, why is the Ashes any more significant than a test series played between India and Pakistan?

If you watch the crowds in London tonight, and see the reception in the morning papers and on television in Australia tomorrow, you'll know that it doesn't. It is definately one of the greatest head-to-head ties of any sport in the World, certainly in our sporting lexicon it is the only tie on the same level as playing football against Germany.

Stupid debate. All but few cricketers would prefer to win the WC. But in the test arena, Ashes is the most prestigious trophy given its history. Though lack of competitiveness took a lot off edge off it in 90s and early 00s-

Bloody hell, drop it, your embarressing yourself now.

On an internet forum? I don't get embarrassed over the internet.

That's because it's one of the only team sports to place such significance on a head to head tie. The newspapers in the morning might want to pretend this win means something, but it really doesn't. Winning a multi teamed tournament would be much more impressive.

Assuming England and Australia were on a similar level, both teams have a 50/50 chance of winning. And given that it's played, what, every two years, you can expect to win it on average every 4 years.

You can talk about the prestige of the Ashes all you like, you still can't get away from the fact that it's contested between only two teams. No other team sport in the world would place so much importance and prestige on a two teamed event.

Who cares what other sports do, I am season ticket holder at Chelsea, have been to county cricket, the rugby premiership, Wimbledon and the FIFA world cup final- I love them all, I love the anticipation, the pain and joy they all bring- playing one tie, for 25 whole days where every single moment matters and only takes place in this country once every four years embroiled in a very bitter rivalry over a very English sporting occasion is where it is at.

Aye aye, fair enough. I understand that it means a lot to cricket fans in England and Australia, but I just find it hard to see why. And I do think that the media reaction today, like 2005, is massively over the top. Anyone could be forgiven for thinking England have won the football World Cup.

Well done England. They played when it counted the most.

Special mention to Trott, fantastic start to what should be a good career. Now one more time for the South African:

"HIS NAME IS JONNY TROTT, HE HAS A GREAT BIG COCK, HE PLAYED IN THE ASHES,
AND HE HIT THE WINNING KNOCK!"

I endorse this post.

Except for the Rolf Harris (Tie me Kangaroo down, sport - classic), and the Russel Crowe part.

You forgot Germaine Greer (sp?) though.

To the Australian bloke on BBCs Mock the Week who put down the England cricket team, are you laughing now eh?

I endorse the post also, but you missed Glenn "we'll win it five nil" McGrath!

Particularly pleased for Strauss, who led the team so well, and Prior, who has proved a lot of people wrong with the quality of his 'keeping and batting.

Stuart Broad as well, might have been discarded part-way through this series and has ended it on a high.

Well done England.

The best thing about this series was that I didn't have to see Healey's smug idiotic face AND ramblings. Ironically, now, the worst thing is I don't get to see his reaction.

Honestly I wanted Australia to lose to South Africa because of his supreme arrogance.

BTW you know we'll win it back once the 2 year break-period is up in 1.3 years.
