Hopefully.
The more I think about it the more annoyed I am getting.
The team needs batsmen who can hold an innings together. If they're all trying to blast off, what we see is it coming off for one or two of them each innings which results in a semi-decent team total, but not enough. Momentum is huge and it is not only giving up their wicket cheaply, but it puts the lower order in a tougher position. 7, 8 and 9 will naturally score more runs if their team are on top and the opposition are on the back foot, save for the occasional counter attacking slog that comes off.
Root is the most obvious one to highlight because his natural game is exactly what we need right now. It's brilliant if he can add things into his game now and then but it should be done when needed at select moments. There's no need to be taking on arguably the best bowler in the world like that, especially when they just lost Ashwin. They could steadily accrue pressure rather than trying to magic it out of nowhere. They seem to be forgetting that scoreboard pressure is the most important, bursts of attacking shots are useful tools and probably have some psychological advantage but they don't exceed time at the crease and runs on the board. I can only assume they have the mentality either that they are going to completely annihilate and dominate the opposition, taking down Bumrah to assert themselves, or that it's insecurity that makes them think their only hope is a swashbuckling attack that rattles the opposition. Either way its not pragmatic. If its ego, they need to be more humble and give respect where its due. If its insecurity, they need to have more faith in themselves rather than embracing the plucky underdog mentality.
Beyond Root though you need others in the team who can do both roles when required. Stokes is the only other one who digs in at times, adjusting to the situation. He can't accumulate like Root though and does tend to get himself in and build up to trying to smack it out of the ground, which is annoying when he gets out like today but at least its an intrinsic part of his game, so can't be too critical and it's why he's not a top order batsmen. Given the openers and to an extent Pope are all naturally more inclined towards quick scoring as well, the emphasis really needs to be on 4 and 5 providing some balance, reading the situation and adjusting accordingly.
Bairstow, I mean it's hard to criticise him for being too Bazball as he has barely even got himself in in this series. But I can't help but imagine how much better this England team would be if it had one player in the mould of Trott, Williamson or Smith. Or even better, a batsman or two who can adjust to the situation, dig in and accumulate when needed, and accelerate or counter attack when required.
