England - Euro 2021 Discussion | FA chairman: Southgate to be offered new contract until Euro 2024

No that’s silly, if we win (especially if comfortable) then we are wrong and he’s right. However I do think that leaked line up is madness.
It's a sign of what will come later in the tournament and that's why it's wrong. All well and good if he wants to be cautious about using players coming back from injury before the knockout phase so will use a completely different team after the group.. but is he really that overconfident about topping the group? That's a reckless risk and really not what I think he is doing. Plus players not getting match rhythm etc. This is genuinely who he believes is his best 11 of fit players right now. And it's fecking shocking. It'd be a failure of epic proportions to not get out of the group so no it doesn't matter if he finishes 1st or 2nd with shit lineups, it's after the group that matters and if he uses this, he won't make it far past the group stage.

If the leaked team is correct then Gareth obviously has his reasons but to have no Grealish in the side and Trippier at left back, if rumours are to be believed, would be madness, in my opinion.

Also, you look at Rice and Phillips and just think how JWP was left at home. Few strange decisions but hoping we can get off to a good start, regardless of team selection.

Edit:

Looks like leaked team was correct.

Doesn't make any sense to leave Shaw and chilwell out....sigh. And am not even English.

Yep. We're better off not winning the group.
Not true at all. If you top the group, you're on the same side as big names who are in bad form or going through troubles like Spain, Netherlands, and 2nd and 3rd in the group of death, likely Germany and Portugal. If you get 2nd, you'll be in the same side as France, Italy, Belgium. Yeah you play Portugal at the Ro16 but if you fluke a win in Wembley against them, then you'd be favourites to make the final. In the other bracket you'd be favourites to get past Poland or Sweden but then very low odds to get past France or Italy or Belgium.

How can Trippier bench a natural (superb) LB in Shaw? Watch him play a blinder now though!

As expected, Southgate is going to get this all wrong.

We have 2 of the best left backs in the world, so he plays a right back there...

He's setting himself for a fall. If we lose today, both the England fans and the media will be all over him for going with this side, and he'll only have himself to blame.

Oh well, let's see how it goes.

No Sancho on bench? What the fecking feck? This is already a shambles. Haha.

The leak was correct

Southgate is an idiot. Probably the easiest but biggest part of being a good international manager is just picking your best players in a lineup that makes sense... and he leaves some of his best performers on the bench or out of the squad altogether! Saka ahead of Sancho? fecking madness. Shaw behind Trippier. Grealish on the bench.

England managers being fecking idiots in big tournaments is undefeated. Happens every time.

It's actually mad to think how Sterling is starting when nearly every winger you have was better than him this season.

Including ones that are sat at home. Hope he has a stinker

Well fair play, he's gone for what he believes is right but he will face serious questions if this doesn't work.

Fancy taking 2 in form left backs and playing neither of them because Trippier starts?? Seriously Shaw and Chillwell must be pissed off.

Grealish not starting will be the biggest question, how he doesn't start ahead of shitty Sterling is a mystery.

Dangerous though if we (Scotland) win and carry momentum into what is going to be a game full of nerves and tension.

Even 3rd is better than 1st though. Could probably lose today and against Scotland but still go through with a win against Czech...
