England - Euro 2021 Discussion | FA chairman: Southgate to be offered new contract until Euro 2024

Came in here to chat about England's team but I see I've stumbled into the brexit thread with a few gammons embarrassing themselves.

I struggle to see this group suddenly turning it on, because I don't know what turning it on is with Southgate in charge sadly. He's just not the one.

How many unsuccessful dribbles from Rashford so far? Needs to not always go with the dribble first option and actually get his head up.

Heard that Maguire would only be ready in the knock-out stages. Goes to show how important he is to his teams eventhough people, including United fan loved knocking him down. I'd like to put Dean Henderson over Pickford but apparently it would create even bigger controversy on CAF. :wenger:

I think Deano is the better goalie, but he isnt ready yet so I'd rather him on the England's bench this summer.
Frankly I think Deano and Johnstone are better - Pope suddenly is, when fit

Nope im just not as brainwashed as some of you have been.

I commend you for saying how you feel despite the obvious risk of reactionary backlash.

I detailed in another thread the many ways I feel equality would be better reached than kneeling, but if players wish to take the knee then by all means carry on. I would argue though that few people have a strong problem with it, and mostly feel it hasn't been dissociated enough from the actual group 'BLM', rather than the slogan itself being problematic.

This argument is increasingly being dismissed as people protesting a group they don't understand but it still carries weight. BLM are a divisive organisation even among black people and seem to have a real problem with clarity between 'leaders' as well as a clearly defined 'mission' to 'defund the police.' this is a wildly unpopular position and the FA haven't been clear enough in dissociating the gesture from the organisation.

Should they be very explicit on that point, id suspect less resistance

unfortunately there’s no one better than Pickford. Let’s not put on the red tinted glasses and claim Henderson is a better keeper.
don't need glasses to tell me pretty much anyone is better than pickford: Pope when fit, Johnstone and Hendo now. Did you see pickford flapping al over the place against Austria?

I see the "taking the knee" before the game as a gesture of solidarity between all players, no matter their background, class, race, ethnicity, etc. It's awful the comments that many players have to deal with anyway through social media, without adding all of the racism on top of that. By itself, taking the knee isn't going to solve anything, but it's part of that wider picture of acceptance. Football (well, sport in general) should be for everyone.

It's clear that racist comments towards players should be seen as unacceptable. But, that's society's problem seeping its way into football, not purely a football related problem, and so much work needs to be done there. However, I will say that many fans take their "criticism" of players way, way too far, and that's before you even add the racist comments. Fans (not all) can be downright abusive to players, and once you allow that, you will always get some that will use that as a platform to then spout their prejudiced views.

And how does that do anything other than raise that dreaded awareness you don't like? Are they going to get everyone who sends Rashford racist abuse on Twitter to pay the fines for clubs not meeting their fixtures?

Games don't get played and it hits everyone's pocketbooks. Believe me, the powers that be would come around to actual change. You want to extract change from billionaires then you have to force them to the bargaining table. Footballers make one hell of a wage, they can sustain punishment from their clubs for refusing to play. The players have the power to enact real change. Put some demands together and do something about them, we're talking about combating racism. Kneeling isn't putting up a fight.

Wasting a good group of players by sticking with him.

Can anyone explain Godfrey to me?

Anyway, regardless of taking a knee or not, with obvious parallels to United, England have the wrong man in the job and are squandering a quality generation of footballers.

They should be one of the most exciting teams at the tournament and they won’t be.

Loving how mobile Grealish is. He seems to be getting everywhere and is a real driving force at times.

Proof is in the pudding I suppose, and at least if this goes badly the next tournament isn't far away. I'd be interested to see how we'd do under Howe.

So the players walking off does nothing that the FA/Premier League couldn't do tomorrow if they wanted to. It's just a somehow better version of the awareness you didn't like earlier.

Nothing says not listening to racists like demanding black players (and anyone sympathetic to the idea of them not getting racist abuse) to withdraw themselves from football until the governing bodies can be bothered to do something.

You don't even have to hear Grealish to tell he's a brummy

A cesspool because posters believe that people shouldn’t be booing players trying to raise awareness about racism

Anyway. I can’t believe Mings is the senior centre back and people think England have a chance.

I can see what you're saying, but it's also really hard to judge it on based on the performances in friendlies. The intensity is just way too low and we're not really seeing too much from the talent that we have in Calvert-Lewin, Rashford, Grealish, and Sancho.

Granted, if our first couple of games are like this, then I'll agree with you. The team should be expected to play well judging by who is in the squad.

Seems like this thread has been more entertaining than the match so far.

Weird that Rio Ferdinand was subject to racist abuse whilst working for BT at Wolves the other week, if it's not about racism but the fact people aren't distancing themselves enough from BLM. Did he walk on the pitch and kneel when nobody was looking?

Its england. The wet paint thread is better
Rubbish aren’t they, don’t understand the team he’s picked. Fetched half the right backs in England then picks Godfrey there.

Or maybe they've had enough of woke shit?

edit: Wow really? an infraction? why not ban me again while you're at it?
what a cesspool this forum has become
It's been a year mate let's move on shall we?
Nope im just not as brainwashed as some of you have been.

I am from mixed race, white mother and Asian father, I have concerns over this too eventhough I think Gif Lord could have chosen better words here. I kinda feel that this knee thing can not go for long and will become a target for more and more abuse. Maybe the gesture needs to evolve... could be changed a little to give the same message... I just don’t want idiots to find more excuse to boo the players.

I wonder if players discussed how to evolve their gesture after a year has passed...

He is a CB and not a RB which Southgate should have seen when we experimented him there.
So we had 4 RBs in our squad, one got injured so we have to play a CB at RB?

If he'd done his job, he'd know that Holgate is the better player and is the one that can play right back. Godfrey is a CB
